Haven't re-watched the game...but I do believe we played much more man coverage than last year.

LSU formationed the D to get some great mismatches and also just flat out torched a few DBs...including Malcolm.
I hate to admit this, because it just stings too much, but that 4 man bunch wide right, throw to the TE to the left was just a great great call. I would have liked to see OSU do something like that...

Not to mention that their DL stepped it up a couple notches after our first two drives. They totally clogged the middle from our third possesion on. They totally blew up our OL on 3rd and goal from the 2...

Turnovers always kill you, and can alter a well thought out gameplan tremendously. Part of the turnover issue was due to pressure on the QB, and another part was due to something we've seen all year: Boeckman underthrowing deeper routes. Typically, that's been broken up by our WRs, or functioned much like a punt in terms of field position change. However, when the WR doesn't break it up AND doesn't tackle the DB, you get a big return, which means a big field position change and momentum change.

I haven't heard a lot of people talk about the field position issue either. We seem to be stuck on this playcalling broken CD without understanding that down, distance and field position restricts you to certain parts of your playchart.

Failed execution left us in a lot of limited down and distance situations. The inability of the defense to get turnovers or three-and-outs early left us battling against field position. Turnovers and resulting scores also left us in less-favorable field position. You have a lot more options on 1st and 10 at the 50 than you do on 3rd and 8 at your own 30.

Execution, turnovers, penalties and defense were the main culprits on Monday. Offensive play calling may make the list, but it's so far down as to be virtually irrelevant. Hold on to the football, stay in the pocket, make accurate throws, don't drop the ball, don't commit stupid penalties, and play better defense and this becomes a different conversation.

I just don't see how "run Beanie more" or "be more unpredictable" fits into any of that.

While we are admitting that LSU actually played a pretty good game, I think Matt Flynn deserves a ton of credit. I recall several plays where he made a perfect pass with someone in his face.

The only thing that really stood out to me on D was how wide our DL was lining up when they were in the spread. Big Vern was so far out on the edge, it was like he had an extra 8-10 yards to go to make a play. I'm not an X and O's guy, so I don't know if you just have to play contain with some of those formations or if you can bunch up in the middle and let them try to beat you on the edge.

Its been harped and harped, but the only disappointment in the scheme for me was the short to intermediate passing game off of 3-step or playaction. This is where I thought Henton could have helped some with the sprint out looks to relieve that man press from the DBs.

The deeper routes and drops came because the WRs could not release. You absolutely cannot have 1, 2, 3, release when your WRs are still shucking hands off of their chestplates. LSU showed the man press, we took deep shots over and over like we were supposed to do with a straight drop...however, 5 step drops equal more time for stems, more time for the rush, and more time for the OL to hold up.

Blaming one aspect of anything is misguided...there is always a chain of events that lead to what you see.

Trust me, there is not a successful coach in America that does not know his own tendencies.

I have just now been able to think about football and the game again. That was a though loss to swallow. I give LSU all the credit, they beat us, they were clearly the better team.

The first 2 series we had the ball we played with an energy that we just couldn't keep up. Beanie had a great run and showed that "SEC SPEED" is a load of crap. He out ran a guy with the angle on him.

Coming into the season I thought we would finish with 2 or 3 losses. Just because we are so young and I really didn't think we had the talent in some spots to play with other teams. But once we got up to number 1 in the polls, I started to hope we could do it this year. I think next year we win it all.

Did you notice that our normal LT (Ciron Black) was one of the 4 wides set out to the right, and Dickson (the TE) was actually lined up as the LT?

Not by name.

Later, LSU used this same formation to run a WR screen. To Doucet, if I recall correctly.... I am certain this is precisely what OSU thought was coming the first time. It seemed almost assured they were getting as much "line" out wide as they could.

I agree with everything you say. The real challenge will be to get to the title game if you lose to USC. I think the pollsters will not reward you with a shot if there are other undefeated or one loss teams out there.

I think it a real possibility that one of the two best teams in 08 will sit it out, as voters will do a "they had their chance twice" thing - unless you just come out and slobber knock everybody you play next year.

Let me be blunt. You need to run up the score next year, issue of sportsmanship be damned, if you want the voters to let you in the game next year. A win over USC at their home and you can ignore what I've just said.

I'd say a loss to USC completely eliminates us.

I also agree with gator, we really need to go undefeated next year for the public to view us as a championship caliber team. And if everyone perceives the Big Ten to be weak again next year we are going to have a harder time. It is sad that the public perception is so bad for the team now, although we have received more criticism than teams in the past with similar showings. It is funny to think though that 5 top five finishes in 7 years, 3 NCG appearances in six, and a recent 30 and 33 record, is all disregarded because we just didnt finish.

I am really looking forward to next year though.

Go Bucks!

I feel for you OSU fans, having to return home after another embarrassing loss in front of a national audience. But is the result really a surprise, or were you just engaging in wishful thinking? One only had to compare the respective schedules.

In the regular season OSU played a total of 3 ranked teams (Perdue, PSU and UM), none of which was ranked higher than 23rd at the time. LSU played 7 ranked teams (Va Tech, S. Carolina, Florida, Kentucky, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee), none of which was ranked lower than 18th at the time. Simply put, the Tigers appear to have been better battle-tested long before they reached New Orleans, whereas the Buckeyes cruised through the B10 for the second year.

If you disagree, just look at the final rankings. LSU beat 5 of the top 15 teams. OSU beat nobody among that group (UM finished at 18).
Call me crazy, but I have a distinct feeling that your time here will be short.
