So the (41 point dog + 1 point victory) 42 point turnaround doesn't really do much for you either, huh? Man, I thought only paid professionals came up with this kind of rhetoric. I value your posts bro, but we don't have a playoff. USC is going to have to be a little more convincing to me. Even I could take a roster full of 5* #1 guys and lose to Stanford. Let's give credit where it is due....oh yeah, Oregon is in my corner too.
The USC lovefest seems to strike this time every year, but strangely enough when we are beating sub-par opponents, they are losing to the same ilk. But while we get slammed for beating them, it seems they are praised for losing to them?
I don't get it.
True we don't have playoffs...however, I just think USC is the best team in the country by the end of the year almost every year. It seems they find a way to blow it early on and this year they had a bunch of key injuries. We were lucky enough to only have Lawrence Wilson out all year. I just think they hit their stride by the Illinois game and I don't think LSU, UGA, or anyone else would beat them if they just didn't totally self destruct with their players healthy. This is just my opinion obviously and since there is no playoffs it's really fruitless to debate it but all I'm saying is USC is going to be a really, really tough game for us. Luckily we face them early and at home, which I think gives us a chance.
As for having a shot at the title next year, we are going to need to see improvement in the following:
- Mental prepartion and leadership for the defense (great point Tresselbeliever...it looked as if they just gave up after it was 17-10).
- Jenkins and JL need to be back for their senior season and Boone would be great as well
- Better QB play...Todd played a decent game but you have to protect the ball and make good decisions. Many think good decisions is not throwing INT's only and it's not. He held onto the ball WAY too long and he doesn't know how to just throw the ball away. He also needs to work on his pocket presence and everytime his first read is covered, he gets happy feet and panicks...he also runs right to where the pressure is coming from it seems. With Pryor likely in, he and Henton are really going to push Todd and we're either going to have a new QB or a much improved Todd Boeckman, which is what competition does for you.
- Better WR play. We aren't getting any seperation on good DB's and Ray Small's technique needs to improve and he needs to attack the ball.
- Better preparation from JT. You have to stick with what wins games in Beanie Wells but we get back to that too late. We also really had one wrinkle play to Saine and that was it. We need to utilize our athletes like Small, Saine, and MoWells, and next year we will need to get the ball in the hands of players like Posey, Thomas, and Pryor. The more threats we have, the more effective Beanie and the rest of the team will be.
- This right here is #1 imo...better DT play. JL, Marcus Freeman, and Ross Homan are going to beast at LB with other studs backing them up. Our DT's were what worried me all year and especially in the LSU game. We lost some guys early on that would be playing at DT (Maupin for example) and that hurt us but we just haven't put enough emphasis on recruiting DT's. A standout DT is what makes your defense imo. You have to have a guy that gets double teamed and sometimes still makes plays. My main concern in this game was Hester right up the middle, and Hester right up the middle happened all night. Our DT's have not done their job this year well enough (against Illinois or LSU mainly) but they are young. Regardless, we will need to see vast improvement here or a good OL is going to open up run lanes all day long against us. Goebel, Rowell, and possibly Mobley could help us out and we are finally starting to recruit more DT's but it really hurt us this year.
