BCS Chances (El Gigante Merge)

Because for years this board has been dogging Texas but every since they beat you most of your opinions have changed dramatically. Had OSU not played them alot of opinions on this board would be different....

Quite frankly, I'd like to have Texas at a neutral venue right now. Let's not forget that Ohio State was handicapped by the quarterback suspension issue.

I think we can beat Texas or USC at a neutral venue.

JXC's predicted BCS ratings for this week...

#1 USC .9833
#2 Texas .9732
#3 Alabama .8967
#4 Miami .8537
#5 Penn State .7703
#6 Virginia Tech .7457
#7 LSU .7340
#8 Ohio State .6640
#9 Georgia .6633
#10 Oregon .6083

This was pretty hard to do without the Harris poll, and all of the computer poll info at the time I did it. But I used the thing I have called a brain, (something the BCS doesn't have) and tried to figure out what was likely to happen in the info I didn't have...and I think I may be at least pretty close. The difference between Georgia and Ohio State is the closest of all. Let's see how close I get to the real thing.

The biggest jump is Penn State...while LSU doesn't move even though two teams that were ahead of it in last weeks poll lost.

If the BCS poll does look like this, then our losses don't look so bad at all.

Also, the new BCS should have Michigan in the top 20, and Northwestern in the top 25. Again...another plus for us on our quest for the top 6.

OSU shoots for BCS

Buckeyes helped by upsets, still have chance to earn one of eight berths

<!-- begin body-content --> COLUMBUS - There were representatives of the Outback Bowl watching Ohio State's 40-2 win over Illinois on Saturday.
Sorry, guys, the Buckeyes are aiming higher.
That doesn't mean they won't miss the target. Ohio State's final regular-season games -- home against Northwestern and at Michigan -- promise to be rigorous tests.
But the Buckeyes probably will be favored to win both, and considering that the oddsmakers usually know what they're doing, Ohio State is likely to be invited to one of the BCS bowls (Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, but not Rose, which is reserved for the top two teams), which outrank all others in prestige and cash payouts.
It might be a little early to determine how the Buckeyes would fit into the BCS picture, because as senior linebacker A.J. Hawk said after the triumph over the Fighting (but outmanned) Illini: ``That stuff is so complicated, I don't know how it works. I just don't pay attention to it. It's complicated enough for the experts.''
Surely, if all student athletes (and sports writers) were forced to pass a test on the intricacies of the BCS conundrum, graduation day might never come. However, it's time to dive into the morass.
Last week, Ohio State stood 10th in the BCS standings. If the Buckeyes remain among the top 12, they will be eligible to play in a BCS bowl.
Obviously, it would help their cause to rise in the standings, and that should happen this week, inasmuch as No. 9 Florida State and No. 5 UCLA were upset on Saturday.
Moreover, Saturday night's game between third-ranked Virginia Tech and sixth-ranked Miami promised to produce a loser, which probably would drop below Ohio State.
But a cautionary note must be added. The BCS rankings aren't so simplistic as to ensure a big leap forward for the Buckeyes. It might be only a small hop and skip. Keep in mind that Ohio State did not beat a juggernaut in Illinois, a team with a 2-7 record.
That aside, the Buckeyes have an excellent chance of landing a BCS bowl berth. All they have to do is keep winning. If that happens, Bobby Carpenter can make good on his threat.
``We're thinking about braiding our hair for the bowl game,'' said the senior linebacker, whose straight blond locks almost touch his broad shoulders.
Carpenter knows about BCS bowls. Ohio State won the 2002 national championship by beating Miami in the Fiesta Bowl. The Buckeyes returned to Mesa, Ariz., to whip Kansas State the next year.
There are certain perks afforded to collegians who qualify for BCS play. Ohio State's football team stayed at the Fairmont Princess Hotel and Resort in Scottsdale both times it appeared in the Fiesta Bowl.
With all due respect to Tom Bodett, the Princess ain't no Motel 6.
``I guess it might be kind of a bittersweet thing,'' Carpenter said. ``Any BCS bowl is great. But variety is good, too. You don't want to go to the same restaurant every time. But sure, I'd like to go back there.''
Carpenter has a point. But without leaving the grounds of the Princess, he would have a choice of six places to eat, not counting his room. He also would have his choice of five swimming pools, if the Buckeyes made it back to Arizona.
``You always want to get to a BCS bowl,'' Carpenter said. ``This year, we kind of got behind the 8-ball by losing to Penn State.''
But that might not prove to be decisive. The early line on Ohio State's bowl appearance includes the following predictions:
• ESPN.com says OSU will be picked for the Orange Bowl and play Virginia Tech.
• CBS Sportsline.com picks the Capital One Bowl and a date with LSU.
• College Football News.com predicts it will be the Fiesta Bowl with UCLA as the opponent.
On the other hand, the folks making the forecasts don't pick the teams. Better to ask what the players at Northwestern and Michigan think. Then again, maybe they won't have a choice either.

Bama doesnt have a good enough offense to win out. They have been lucky since Prothro was injured, but it will run out and I would not be surprised to see them lose both games.

I am about to rant so if you want to read go ahead.

I can't fucking stand the BCS and all the polls. They are so much BS.

Here are a couple of examples, for some reason Notre Lame is ranked ahead of us, what have they done to be ranked ahead of us. there only decent win was against scUM. They lost to USC and MSU. We lost to Texas and PSU. Two top 10 teams. We have also played through MSU, Minny, Iowa. Putting a spanking on 2 of the 3. Put us in their schedule and we have one less lose than them b/c we beat MSU. They also lost their two games at home.

Why is LSU ranked ahead of us. Who have they beat Fl. and Auburn both at home, they lost to Tenn(who blows balls, might not even make a bowl), they got lucky as hell against ASU who is a middle of the road pac-10 team beat Appl. St.(NAIA?) 24-0, so they are still ranked high b/c of where they were ranked at the beginning of the season, if you put us in their scedule we are probably undefeated and them in our schedule and they probably have 3 loses.

What about VA Tech who in their toughest game at home at night got exposed, by a overrated Miami team. Look at who they have played so far, BC no longer ranked, overrated, NC st.(4-4), Ga Tech was there one impressie win. Once again put them in our schedule and they at least 2 games and maybe 3. Put us in their scehule and I think we could beat Miami at our place at nite. Lets not forget Miami lost to a Fl. St. team that is not very good. They are all getting high rankings b/c they are beating up on the patsies of the conference.

In fairness to Texas, they went out and scheduled a top 10 team and played them on the road, even know they won't play anyone else the rest of the year, they tried to do what they could to make their schedule impressive.

Now lets look at a scenario that could play out if Bama and USC lose. Who is the best one lose team, PSU(No doubt) They lost to scUM @ the big house on a play that never should of happened. We all know tho if SC loses and so does Bama they will be sitting pretty to play Texas.

Why do teams not get rewarded for playing tough teams. We have played arguably two of the top 3 teams in the country and had a chance to beat PSU and Texas stole the game right out from underneath us. What if we would schedule Appl. St. and sisters of the poor, we would be sitting real pretty right now also. It is kind of like MSU in bball when they play Duke, UK, Cuse, etc. then the big ten and come tourney time they get a 5 seed and end up in the final four every year.

Also what about the Big East, if we played int he Big East we would go undefeated every year and play for the NC. It is getting ridiculous how bad the BCS is becoming, the only way the BCS works is if two teams like the year we played Miami actually go undefeated and play at the end of the year.

The BCS sucked last year b/c AU was left out, and after the fact it looked like OU should of been left out. This year Bama(I don't think they will win out) could get left out. Why don't we reward teams for playing a tough schedule rank them ahead of teams that play patsies and make teams actually try and schedule someone. I know I for one would love to see more games like tOSU vs. Texas.

If we could have an 8 team playoff and play it out at the end of the year it would be awesome.

There is no reason not too, every other fuckin' sport division and everything else has one besides D-I college football.

How bout this for the 8 team playoff.

1. USC vs. 8. tOSU - while USC has dominated a decent schedule tOSU has had two tough loses to teams in the playoff and have continued to improve all year, this will be one hell of a game. The site of the game will be at SC and tOSU will get 30,000 out of 90,000 tickets. Vegas line - USC -5

4. Miami vs. 5. PSU - While Miami had a tough loss at the beginning of the year to FSU they have continued to improve and dominated Va Tech in Blacksburg. PSU had a heartbreaking last second loss at scUM and they are playing as good of ball as anyone in the country. Game played at Miami and tickets split somewhat even to accomadate some PSU fans. Vegas line - Miami -2.

3. Bama vs. 6. Va Tech - Bama ran through the season undefeated through the tough SEC and has one helluva a defense, Va Tech rebounded after playing noone all year until Miami and getting pasted and now look to pull off an upset. Looking at a big defensive struggle Once again tickets split evenly. Vegas Line - Bama -3.

2. Texas vs. 7. Notre Lame - Texas had a weak schedule other than tOSU which they beat at the Shoe' no one really knows how well they will play since having a easy ride through the season. They go up against a great O' but no D for Notre lame. This should be a high scoring game, but in the end Texas' good defense will shut down the Weis' O' and win. Game at Texas tickets evenly split. Vegas Line - Texas - 7.5

After the first two rounds the winner of 1vs8 and 4vs5 will square off in Tempe(Fiesta Bowl) should be another great game in the semifinals.

The winner of 2vs7 and 3vs6 will square off in Miami(orange Bowl) also should be anothet great game.

Then the winners of the semifinals meet in pasedena(Rose Bowl). should be the greatest thing ever witnessed in college football as we now have the playoff in place. It will show who is playing the best football and who shold be crowned champ, there will be no conterversy as the 8 best teams squared off and showed what they had on the field.

I can dream right. Also if this was ever to happen there would be more big non-conference games b/c one loss doesnt put you out of the national title hopes.

Also don't give me the whole season is like a playoff bullshit b/c someteams have a lot easier road and that is not fair and what do you say to teams like AU last year, sorry about your luck, but 13-0 in the SEC is not good enough for you.

I'll post this here since it looks like the original thread I put it in wasn't the right one.

I was just looking at the rankings and there is a very good possibility that we won't move up in the poll even if we win our next 2 games.

-USC and Texas are probably going to win out and play for the NC
-Miami will probably have to play Florida St again in the ACC title game, but I think Miami wins the rematch.
-LSU has to play Bama and the winner of that game will probably play Georgia in the SEC Title game. If Shockley is healthy I think Georgia beats either of those teams. We might move up a spot depending how this goes. If LSU beats Bama and loses a close one to Georgia they could all stay in front of us. If Bama whoops on both of them then we could jump them both. If Georgia loses to Auburn next week, Bama loses to LSU, and LSU loses to Florida in the SEC championship game we could jump them all.
-PSU plays at MSU and if they win they take the Big 10's BCS spot. I really hope John L Smith can pull one out of his ass.
-ND plays 3 cupcakes to end the season, they probably win out and go to a BCS game
-If VT and Miami win out VT will stay in front of us and not have to play in the ACC title game.

I agree with crazybuckfan40.... nice rant. That system would still cause people to whine about being left out, but is way more fair and exciting than the system in place now. Gives teams a chance to show their stuff on the field, and would add to the entertainment factor.
