Game Thread BCS Championship Game, tOSU vs. Florida - Jan 8th

While this is true, that is why we are not "2004/5 USC or 2005 Texas" in media's eyes.

I agree that's why the media looks down on this team compared to 2005 and 2004 -- unfortunately, style points do matter to the pundits (especially when they don't even watch the games).
I'm just saying that kind of argument is without logical merit.

this is simply what happens when people are asked to write articles about football teams they have never seen play. most of these "experts" watched the michigan game and maybe the texas game. outside of that... the closest they have come to watching tOSU is highlights on sportscenter.

if tOSU wants to be put in the same league in the eyes of these people as last years usc/texas teams. they have a shot against florida. never forget that your merit as a football team in the eyes of the media is only as impressive as your latest box score.

If we win they will have to acknowledge the fact we will be the only #1 to ever defeat three different #2's in the same season.

Win by 10+ and some GOAT talk will start imo.

Exactly...i'm sick of people comparing 2006 Florida to 2002 Ohio State. WE DIDNT LOSE IN 2002. People just assumed we couldn't beat Miami because we won close games. Well Florida has won close game...AND LOST! If Ohio State had lost 1 game in 2002, there is NO WAY they would have been in the NC game. Florida is LUCKY to be in the championship game, because they lost...Ohio State was NOT lucky in 2002 to get in the championship game, they won all their games on the field...and that's what got them in. That's what made them a team of destiny. If Florida is this gritty, defensive, always wins close games team of destiny, then they shouldn't have lost to Auburn. Plus might I add...that their defense isn't near as good as ours was in 2002...their defense isn't even as good as ours this year. People talk about them being a great defensive team...yet they don't even have the best defense in the game!!! Maybe they have an edge at OLB...maybe.

We are a whole heck of a lot better than Auburn...and even though Florida is #2 and Michigan is #3...Florida is whole heck of a lot worse than Michigan.

This is Florida...

Michigan minus Woodley, Hart and Manningham.

First, I completely agree with my esteemed colleague (and former co-worker) that the 2002 Bucks aren't much like 2006 Florida. They were both underdogs . . . sure. But in every game a team is favored, so every game has an "underdog." A team that wins every game, though often in an ugly fashion by close margins, is usually privately doubted, but no one can question that they earned their way into proving they're the best. A team that wins most of its games, though often in ugly fashion and by close margins, and actually loses once, has not earned that right. They will be doubted publicly and, if they do make it to the championship game, people have the right to doubt they belong there.

And Chris Leak being a "heady" quarterback is indeed a stretch. Experience is not a virtue in itself -- you need to perform well in big-game situations, or at least show that you are improving. Leak hasn't done that; all he's done is fail to live up to the potential he went to UF with in the first place. He's a slightly better Chris Rix.

Now, all that said, I don't know if I buy that OSU's defense is clearly better. Holding LSU to 10 points is pretty damn impressive. You'll see what I mean when the Tigers hang about 70 on the most overrated, overhyped team of all time: The Fighting Charlie We . . . err, Irish, of Notre Dame. I'm not saying that Florida's defense is clearly better; I'm simply saying that the question is in doubt, and, like all questions of this kind, will be decided on the field come January 8th. After we gave up nearly 40 to UM (granted, 8 of those came in a prevent defense, but still), I think we're fooling ourselves if we don't acknowledge that our D has the propensity to give up big plays from time to time.

One thing that can be said for us: our defense has always done enough for us to win. They've been able to rise up whenever we needed them to. Just look at our "transition" D after turnovers; it's been amazing all year, and that ability to step it up when we've most desperately needed it (not just because the game is close, but also because a turnover creates momentum and what an offense does with that turnover is an even bigger momentum shifter) is, maybe more than anything, what characterizes OSU's D this year. The same thing happens when opposing offenses cross midfield; that's why our scoring D is #1.

Florida's D? They're certainly good. But have they done enough for UF to win every game? Have they stepped up in every situation, whether the O put up huge numbers (like we did against UM) or has a rough outing (think Illinois)? The answer is no.

Fortunately, these sorts of comparisons don't mean much. The fact of the matter is it's hard to stack up the cream of the SEC with the cream of the Big Ten on paper because the conferences just don't have that many common opponents -- and even if they did, those sorts of comparisons are the most inexact of sciences. Guess they'll just have to play the damn game, and even then, the best team may not win.

Meyer?s persistence paid off well in early days
Current Florida coach was an assistant under Heacock at Illinois State

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Maybe it?s a good thing for everyone?s sake that Florida?s Urban Meyer went into football coaching instead of telemarketing. Even before the latter industry took off, Meyer was banging the dial buttons and burning up the wire between Columbus and Normal, Ill., during the winter of 1988, refusing to take no for an answer.

RB DeShawn Wynn and OL Drew Miller were both in protective boots yesterday, but should be ready to play by gametime.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida running back DeShawn Wynn missed practice Tuesday with a bone bruise on his right foot.

The Gators' leading rusher was wearing a protective boot, but coach Urban Meyer said he should be fine by the time No. 2 Florida plays No. 1 Ohio State in the BCS championship game Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz.

I saw that Todd Blackledge(former PSU player and current ESPN Analyst) picked Florida to beat us. That guy is a douche but I don't blame him. He's only done SEC games all year and has been brainwashed into thinking that anyone from the SEC is twice as good as anyone from the Big-10.

No one picked Ohio State to win in 2002. No one picked Texas to win in 2005. You get one guy to pick Florida in 2006, and nothing is going to change. These guys are sports personalities before they're experts. Let him pick Florida on his TV show. It doesn't change what happens on January 8.

he has become an SEC homer, but i still respect him b/c he's a relatively level-headed analyst who actually brings up relevant points. as opposed to Lou "I'm always going with Notre Dame" Holtz or Lee "I just flip a coin to pick my winner" Corso.

I just hope Lee Corso picks the Gators (again). His pick is usually the "kiss of death".

As I agree with your logic, those around me down here say that, due to the SOS, the Gators will have no problem winning this game in big fashion. Honestly, talking to the Gator fans I have talked to, the game is over and they have won by 2 TDs. :horse:

Reminds me of Danielson during the SEC championship game, giving 101 reasons why Florida is better than Michigan. Hey, money talks and CBS is in the pocket of the SEC all because the conference is like the mighty ND, has to go outside the norm to make sure they are seen the country over. Ever heard of brainwashing? That is why I stay away from the Kool Aid down here!

He kind of reminds me of Herbstreit except even more pro-SEC. Well spoken, former Big-10 guy, and does atleast some research. He just needs to lay off the Kool-aid.

I try not to get too worked up over these guys. They are damned if they do damned if they don't. Pick OSU and you look like a Big10 homer/bandwagon guy or go against the grain and look like you're drinking the "sec speed" kool aid. In the end it doesn't mean shit what they say. That's just they way I look at it.

Everyonce in awhile though they will say stuff that makes me scratch my head.
