BCS Bowl Participants for the 2009 postseason

Alright, so all the auto-bids have been locked up.
ACC: Georgia Tech
Big XII: Texas
Big East: Cincinnati
Big Ten: Ohio State
SEC: Alabama
Pac-10: Oregon
Non-BCS Top 12 team: TCU

Now, for the at-large bids, obviously Florida will get one. The other two are likely to be Boise State and Iowa/Penn State.

Assuming that #1 and 2 are Alabama and Texas (hint: despite our crazy dreams, that's probably what it will be) here's how the rest of the bowls should shake out:

  • Orange Bowl must take Georgia Tech.
  • The Sugar Bowl gets to pick a replacement for SEC champs Alabama, they'll likely take Florida.
  • The Fiesta Bowl gets to pick a replacement for Big XII champs Texas, I'm thinking they'll take the best and closest team available, TCU. Boise is also a possibility, though.
  • The Orange Bowl gets the next pick, I'd assume they'd invite Cincinnati for the second year in a row.
  • The Fiesta Bowl gets the next pick, I think they'll go for a Big Ten team, either Iowa or Penn State.
  • The Sugar Bowl would then take Boise State

I'm sure that my guesses are completely off, but you can at least use that as a guide for what order the bowls will pick in.

So I'm thinking the matchups we'll end up with will be:
Oregon-Ohio State (Rose)
Florida-Boise State (Sugar)
TCU-Penn State/Iowa (Fiesta)
Cincinnati-Georgia Tech (Orange)
Alabama-Texas (National Championship)

However, according to the ESPN NCF Blog, we may be looking at a TCU-Boise State Fiesta Bowl, which seems idiotic to me. But the point is, please ignore my uninformed speculation. :sad:

That would be the dumbest picks ever (TCU/Boise). Not only does that give a bowl limited travel from the 2 smaller schools and not give the non-BCS schools that make it a shot at the "Big Boys"...but they just played last year...why not mix it up?

I agree, I'd hate for them to segregate the "little guys" from the "big guys." the entire argument against little guys has been that they only play other little guys, so give them a chance to prove themselves against a big school!

And really, does anyone want to see that matchup? I'd be drooling, on the other hand for Cincy or TCU against Florida.

I don't see the logic in the Orange Bowl taking UC with their second pick. If the Fiesta is dumb enough to take Boise/TCU in spot #3 instead of the better traveling B10 at large team then you as the OB have to grab them with spot #4.

My complete guess looking at it as a Bowl rep who needs to make $$
#1 Orange has to take GT
#2 Sugar takes UF
#3 Fiesta takes Iowa/PSU (far and away best pay day available)
#4 Orange takes UC (unless Fiesta takes TCU, then I grab PSU/Iowa)
#5 Fiesta takes TCU ( I grab UC here if its between them and Boise)
#6 Sugar stuck with Boise

I can't say I'd like those Fiesta and Orange Bowl pairings, but a Florida-Cincy match-up sounds awesome to me.

These guys sit in a room and work it out as to what makes the best match-ups and would make the most money over-all. There is under the table money exchanging hands too. If one bowl could have a "dream match-up", they may pay another bowl so that they will let them have that team. These bowls definitely work together, and not against each other so that they all make the most money.

It's not like it's like a NFL draft or something, where the other bowls are waiting to see who the first one will take, so they can go look at their big board and see who they should take next.

This is why most people don't think Florida is going to get stuck playing Boise State. The match-up of Florida and Cincinnati is much more appealing, and they BCS will probably work to make this happen.

No, you're right. Matching Boise and TCU is idiotic. The country wants to see if the mid majors (and that includes Cincy:biggrin:) have the sack to go head to head with the big boys. They don't want to see them hide in their own little ghetto bowl that no one outside of their respective constituencies will give a damn about.

My hope is:
Iowa-Boise: Boise fan takes obnoxious to 11; they are Cincy fan on roids)
Florida-Cincy: let Tebow take his pain out on little brother
GT-TCU: This one might actually be a game.

I like Cincy/Florida. That's a game I want to see.

As far as what to do with the other 4 taems...iowa, gt, boise, and TCU...

Well I really only think TCU is an elite team. The other 3 are blah. TCU would likely beat all three. The other game that TCU won't be in will be a yawnfest. TCU/Boise would be neat because it would be two undefeated teams, but it would also be two mid-majors. The other game, Iowa v. GTech would be nice and winnable for the Big Ten. TCU/GTech would be okay I guess. But TCU isn't going to get much respect in beating the ACC champ when the ACC has showed lately that they just aren't that good. Iowa/Boise would be nice though, I think that would be very interesting. TCU/Iowa to me would be the most interesting matchup you could make out of all of these. And then Boise/Gtech would just be a throw away game in my opinion.

Overall...there isn't really much you can do here. There aren't very sexy teams in the BCS mix this year. Rose Bowl, NCG, and sugar bowl if it is Cincy/Fla will be awesome matchups, but after that, kind of lacking.

I personally would like to see Virgina Tech in the BCS, but it won't happen.
