BCS Bowl Participants for the 2009 postseason

The only thing I can see being a debate if the favorites win out is Penn State or Iowa:

Florida/Alabama winner
OSU
Oregon
ACC "winner"
Cincinnati
Texas

Florida/Alabama loser
TCU
Boise State
Penn State/Iowa

Should Cincinnati or Texas lose, I would imagine they would get in anyway, leaving one less spot. The question then of course would be would Boise State or the 2nd Big Ten team get dropped. I would think it would be Boise State, but one never knows. If both lose, the BCS will be busted, and Boise State and the Big Ten team will be out, whereas Nebraska and Pitt would be in :shake:

Iowa would get the at-large over a Cincy team that loses to Pitt. They'd be ranked close together, and the traveling fan base for Iowa makes that an easy choice.

It is debatable whether Iowa would get picked over an undefeated Boise team if Texas loses. Although a Nebraska-Iowa Fiesta Bowl would have Trev Alberts wetting his pants.

I know I'm not being quite as bold as those of you who predicted before the beginning of the season, but here are my predictions:

Rose
Ohio State vs. Oregon

Orange
Georgia Tech vs. Iowa

Fiesta
Cincinnati vs. Boise State

Sugar
Alabama vs. TCU

National Championship
Michigan vs. Cleveland Browns

Okay. Everyone's argument for Iowa over Virgina Tech is that Virginia Tech has 3 losses, as would Oregon if they lose Thursday. So they would go with a 2 loss team, either Penn State or Iowa. Well then, if the losses matter, then why would they choose Iowa over Boise State who has 0 losses? What the difference? Will Boise bring more money than Oregon?

They won't choose Penn State. But I don't know what makes people so certain they would choose Iowa over Boise if Texas loses. I think they'd choose Boise.

I think that they take losses into account, as well as money. Money is probably a bigger factor, but "more deserving" is probably in the picture, somewhere. I think that they pick Boise over Iowa, if it's down to the two of them for one spot (regardless of the situation), because the potential public back-lash for excluding an undefeated team would probably be more wrath than the BCS wants to feel, especially in the upcoming (but useless) "playoff vs. no playoff" debates.

Assuming Texas wins:

Conference Champs
Alabama/Florida winner
Texas
Ohio State
Oregon/Oregon State winner
Pitt/Cincy winner
ACC winner

3 certain at-larges
Alabama/Florida loser
Iowa
TCU

up for grabs (was probably going to be Oklahoma State before their loss)
Boise for sure if Cincy wins
80% Boise if Cincy loses

You want to know the difference between Boise State and about anyone else?

Fake good. that's the difference.

No. 16 Oregon 9-2
Miami (OH) 1-11
@ Fresno State 7-4
@ Bowling Green 7-5
UC Davis 6-5
@ Tulsa 5-7
@ Hawaii 6-6
San Jose State 2-9
@ Louisiana Tech 3-8
Idaho 7-5
@ Utah State 4-8
Nevada 8-4
New Mexico State 3-9

Good for 91st hardest schedule in the nation.

Color me unimpressed.

A technicality, but as the highest non-AQ-conference team ranked in the top-12, TCU is an Automatic Qualifying team, not an at-large. The difference means that one of the bowls has to select them, just like the winner of the Big East has to be selected by somebody, even though they're not aligned with a specific BCS bowl.

Va Tech supposedly is off the BCS board.... just to end talks about them.

GoVolsextra.com says it's Tennessee vs Va Tech in Chick-Fil-A bowl. Tennessee chosen due to Auburn being picked for another bowl (Outback).

It'll never happen, but I'd love for Iowa, Georgia Tech, and Alabama/Florida to all play one of these mid-majors, and actually show up to play. The carnage would be spectacular.

UF played an eleven win Marshall team and beat them like a drum. Georgia has taken out supposedly great Hawaii and Boise State squads in the recent past. Most of the time when a Mid major shows up they get punked.

Utah, of course, being the exception. I think Bama really wanted no part of the Sugar after being so close to the BCSCG, and gave up when Utah hit them in the mouth and they got behind. They just freaking seemed to quit on Nick. Yes it was an ass beating, but I doubt it would happen 10 or 10. Lord knows their fans were unhappy to be in town rather than Miami.

The Notre Dame football season is officially over.Athletic director Jack Swarbrick announced Friday that the school has decided against going to a bowl game with a 6-6 record, citing "unique circumstances." He didn't elaborate, but Swarbrick fired coach Charlie Weis after five seasons earlier this week and the search for a replacement is under way.

Swarbrick said he reached the decision after meetings with assistant coaches and team leaders.

"The unique circumstances surrounding our program at the current time prevent us from making the commitment required to compete in a bowl game," Swarbrick said in a prepared statement.

Weis was the team's offensive coordinator, so the team wouldn't have had an experienced play caller for a bowl game. The school also likely would have lost money because their only option would have been a minor bowl.

There also have been questions about how motivated players and coaches would have been for the game.

Players actually met this week to discuss whether to play in a bowl. (link)
This is a tragedy. This team could have won the Eagle Bank bowl or MAACO Bowl. I hope they reconsider. College football is poorer for it. :slappy:

On a more serious note, it sounds like an incredible motivation problem for the next coach. How do you describe this team's attitude? Stockholm syndrome?

Someone I listened to brought up a great point. The next coach not only has to recruit new players but re-recruit or prove worth to the rest of the returning team. That is the only way they stay anywhere near the path back to being relevant.
