  • My team and I are going to venture up to a place east of Statesville, NC (Keaton's BBQ) for dinner tonight. Now I really love good BBQ and i started to think of some of the places around the United States that I have visited. How are just two of my favs:

    1) Rudy's (San Antonio, Tx) North of San Antonio off off I-10. Place is the back of a c-store/gasoline operation. You walk in a can pick up cold bottle of beer or soda from an iced trough. You pick up a wooden/plastic soda shell (it is what they used to deliver returnable soda bottles from the manufacturer to the store in) and the order taker places a big piece of butcher paper on the bottom of the shell. You can order creamed corn, cole slaw, baked beans and those items are placed in a paper boat. Next, you can order by the 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 or 1 lbs BBQ chicken, pulled pork, smoked sausage or beef brisket. You purchases are spooned right onto the butcher paper. And don't forget to order the whole dill pickle out of the jar. The dining area is a couple of picnic tables with loaves of bread placed on each. Just grab a couple of pieces of bread and you are in heaven. Paper towels are located throughout the dining area. Place is not much to look at but the food is wonderful.

    2) Can't remember the name of the place but it is located in New Riegel, Ohio right on Rt.587. I hope the place is still in business. Dinner is served in paper boats and the ribs just fall right off the bone. No towelettes here they give each patron a wet wash rag to towel off between bites. I used to leave home a little early on my way to C-Bus and OSU to stop by there and pick up a rack.

Are they any other places around that you all know about? I travel quite a bit and enjoy checking out BBQ from other sections of the country.

Rudy's is a chain in Texas, I absolutely love it, but you will hear mixed reactions from some. For some reason the residents of College Station that I know don't like it much. I just think they are commies. I don't see how you can dislike anything that Nolan Ryan is a spokesman for.

Why the hell are you posting this stuff right before lunch?!? :wink2:

I love barbeque, but there is nothing good around here. My cousin makes great ribs but he lives far away and the last time I had any was three years ago. I told my wife that at some point we are going to take a vacation in Memphis just to take in the barbeque and the music.

Cousin Carol's...backroads of the Pee Dee area
    The Schoolhouse in Scranton, SC
    Brown's in Kingstree, SC

All of these are vinegar-based, buffet style.

You can always tell a real bbq joint...look for the loaf of white bread. If that is missing on the buffet...leave.

Big Bubba's BBQ in the Mohegan Sun has some damn good barbecue and the portions are usually enormous. I like the six pack of sauce they leave at the table.

Smokey Bones has pretty good barbecue. I like the one in Reynoldsburg.

The best barbecue I've probably ever eaten has been homemade. My brother in law's family hooks it up.

I love City Barbecue. They have several Columbus area locations including one right here in Gahanna. My wife had their stuff at my surprise 40th birthday party and I "pigged out", no pun intended.

I also had some great BBQ at KC Masterpiece in Kansas City when I was there on business many years ago.

In C-Bus The only really good place I can think of other than a chain restraunt is JP's at Bolton Field airport. Thier food is absolutely amazing you can't go wrong with anything you order from them
I fogot about JP's. Do they still have a site at the corner of Main and Ohio? I used to walk over there when I worked at a supervisor for Sohio since we had a location right across the street.

Not sure about the main and Ohio location. I'm only familiar with the west location at Bolton Field
