Battlestar Galactica- the TV show

So I've had a few days to take in everything from the most recent episode, and it was one hell of an episode.

The Starbucks stuff is pretty crazy. I mean. How many times did she die on her way to Earth? Once when her Viper was crushed by the atmosphere on that other planet, and apparently once when she crashed and burned on Earth. How many other times (other than the "happened before, happen again" stuff) has she died finding and returning from Earth?

The fifth Cylon. I thought that she was a Cylon way back when her character was introduced, but thought that she might have been one of the seven. Once it was revealed that the final five were unknown to both races, it never occurred to me that she was one of the five.

The whole fucking Earth was Cylons? Damn. Just, damn. Who wiped them out? Was it the other 12 colonies? So, the "happened before, will happen again" stuff is the cycle of humans and Cylons destroying each other?

My head hurts. But in a good way. Not in a 'Lost' sort of way.

As I understood it, the Earth "cyclons" were destroyed by cyclons of their own creation (not the cyclons the 12 had been fighting).

i get the feeling bsg is falling into the same trap many "twist" shows fall into. they spend far too much time trying to shock the viewer rather than just telling a good story.

the starbuck story line is trailing off into i couldn't care less ville and they are running dangerously low on characters i actually give a damn about. no episode nor season must outdo the last. it really isn't necissary. just for the love of god and man give us a good story for a change.

besides, their all cylons anyway.

SPOILERS!!! If you haven't watched the Battlestar Galactica season finale, then you suck, but you probably shouldn't read this post.
..................................................................................................

Just watched the series finale last night, and I have to say that I am very happy with the way it ended. The "final battle" scene was impressive, and the essential annihilation of the "bad cylons" was what had to happen, in order for them to end it in peace like they did.

As soon as they jumped into our solar system, I knew that it was going to be pre-historic Earth, but was afraid that they were going to build frakking Atlantis or some shit. Pretty happy with what they did. Even if the ease of getting everyone to go along with it was a bit unrealistic for a civilization that has fought tooth and nail on every petty issue.

Starbuck story line got wrapped up, IMO, and made more sense than any other way of explaining wtf was going on with her.

Baltar and Caprica Six essentially being able to see angels was pretty wild, but at least they were consistent with the impact of religion on this story line. Rather than adding it in at the end to try and close up any holes in their story.

Hera being the Mitochondrial Eve was a pretty cool twist that means that not everyone on the show is "a frakking cylon"...but we are  .

Loved the show. Loved the finale. Dreading what Caprica will be like, if it ever gets made, but know that I'll have to watch it.

IMO the final episode was 90 minutes of awesome followed by 25 minutes of wrapping up followed by about 10 minutes of bunk.

I really liked that they didn't explain everything away and left a lot to the imagination. (i.e. what was Starbuck, will this happen again and again, etc....)

Battlestar Galactica TV Show - Battlestar Galactica Recaps, Battlestar Galactica Reviews & Battlestar Galactica Episodes | TWoP

The reviewer here is a sci fi channel employee who has raved about the series from day one. I was surprised he gave the final show an F.

Here is what would have made it better-

-Cavill shooting self bad. Tigh getting to do the deed- more awesomeness.

-Helo should have died. He took the belly shot and was doing badly. Athena could have stayed with him and maybe saved him, or she could have gone after Hera likely meaning Helos demise. This was the choice presented, instead Athena gets her cake and eats it too. (and I like the Helo character)

-More cylon on cylon violence please. They went cheap on special effects for earlier episodes to give us that battle scene, and I would gladly have had more talky talk to get even more of the well put together final fight.

-less soap boxing. Ron Moore has created a great show with very good characters. But the soap box at the end was just lame. It is espcially goofy to rip technology on a show that relies heavily on technology to produce.

I was finally able to watch the final episode last night. It did get a little preachy in the end, but was a great wrap up to a great show. IMO it was the 2nd best final episode I've seen behind TNG. I am kind of sad now like I have a friend that I'm never going to see again. Hopefully SciFi can come up with something else to take BSG's place that envolves the BSG creative team. Buck Rogers anyone? Bionic Woman probably would have done ok if it had been on SciFi rather than NBC.

I'm not sure if this warrants it's own thread yet or not, but I watched the Caprica pilot last night.

I went in with a bad attitude toward this potential new series, and came out with a different view.

If you want non-stop action, like BSG season one, then Caprica probably isn't for you. At least the pilot isn't for you. If you like the smart writing, plot lines, character development, and overall production of BSG, then you'll probably like Caprica as well.

The pilot's storyline is very heavy on the "one true god" stuff that BSG had going on, and features alot of moral gray areas, which is what really drew me in for BSG. It's very interesting to see how the Cylons came to be, and it will be cool to see how Moore is able to develop the many characters and storylines to match what we already know about the BSG universe.

4 out 5 stars.

Also, the very first scene, and a couple of scenes throughout the movie, features boobies and butt cracks. This was in the Unrated DVD version that I got from Netflix. Which is likely to be the only version out there right now. If you're watching this with kids, then be aware that this is not edited for basic cable, and you might want to wait for the SciFi channel to show it...whenever the hell that will be.

Sad to see any well done SciFi go away. TV is so abominable in general that any attempt at a decent story is greatly appreciated. I'll take a Caprica series if that happens.

In the mean time may I suggest a rental of the Babylon 5 series to hold you over. Or even Firefly.

...
Crap. Pure, unadulterated, crap. After recently re-watching the pilot, and then watching the next episode, Caprica has been removed from the DVR.

The show has a fairly high production value, for a soap-opera, but that's pretty much where the goodness ends. It angers me discuss it further...good day.

The boobies do a lot for the pilot for you? It might be saved if they could quickly develop a Cylon army and go to war with them in the next 2 episodes. The problem was IIRC this didn't start out related to BSG. This was an unrelated show that they decided to turn into Caprica. SyFy has missed on most of their new shows. The only current show that I like (embarassing as it is) is Eureka.

The boobies didn't hurt, but I think that my objectivity was compromised by wanting the back story to be good. I knew that it wouldn't be as soon as I heard about the premise. Hence, going into the pilot with a bad attitude.

I hadn't heard that this started out being unrelated to BSG. That must've been very early in the writing process considering the amount that the Caprica story relies on people knowing the BSG story. Then again, maybe that's why a lot of the elements feel so forced and choppy.

I've never watched Eureka, but I've heard that it's pretty good. I've downloaded the first episodes of Stargate Universe. SG1 was on for at least 3 years too long, and SG Atlantis was so incredibly bad, that I didn't even give SG Universe a shot. I've heard from several fellow nerds that Universe is actually pretty interesting, so I'll probably pop the first three episodes in while I wait out this storm that I hear we're going to have the next couple of days.

BSG was my sci-fi guilty pleasure. It was worth the s*it I had to take from the NextMrs.Rugby for watching. I cashed in a lot of chick flick karma points to get her to rent the Caprica pilot from Netflix and watch it with me. I had high hopes that the more soap opera-ish storylines would get her caught up. No such luck. BSG "The Plan" didn't help much either. She's not a fan and having seen the Caprica pilot and the second episode, I'm not sure it's worth the trouble. I'm going to give it one more go tonight and then possibly blow it out of the DVR airlock.
