I probably enjoyed Wisconsin athletic director and former football coach Barry Alvarez's book "Don't Flinch" more than most being that I had been a UW student and season ticket holder during my days on campus in 1988 through 1991.

The book holds stories galore about players, coaches and the Alvarez family, and something I thought made it stand out from other sports autobiographies was the all-Alvarez team, which lists Alvarez's top Badgers by position.

DW:For a college football fan who wants to experience the greatest Big Ten atmosphere, other than Camp Randal and I have my own opinions because I've been to them, but where would you suggest for them to go?

BA:I think Columbus (Ohio) is pretty special. The people there really get after it. Penn State is truly special. I think Michigan is blase. Iowa, when they're winning is good; I think they're fair-weather fans. If I had one other choice other than Camp Randall, I'd say Ohio State.

DW:I have to agree with you about Michigan. I went to that game (in 1998) when they won 27-10, and it was just not loud, and they were winning.

BA: When you look at that stadium, you have 100,000 people, but the way it's structured, it lays back and you have a lot of hand clappers there.

Barry is in a power struggle with the University's Athletic Board, which is supposed to oversee the athletic department.

BadgerBeat

Oates: Power struggle persists at UW

There is no doubt the past 20 years have been the golden age of University of Wisconsin athletics.

But at what cost?

The battle brewing on campus regarding the level and method of control that should be exerted over the UW Athletic Department is a sign that the brainiacs who run the university have once again failed to strike a proper balance between handcuffing the department and giving its administrators the power to operate as they please.

This is not a new issue at UW. The chancellor and faculty have been trying to draw that line forever and they?ve never been able to get it right. Either they?re too hard on athletics, which they were when Irving Shain was chancellor in the 1980s, or they?re too lenient, which they have been since the day Donna Shalala became chancellor in 1988.

For whatever reason, UW can?t find a middle ground that would allow athletic success and yet assure everyone in the UW community that someone is keeping a watchful eye on the department.

It is a fact of life that athletic departments tend to get carried away when schools don?t have a system of checks and balances in place. That doesn?t mean the UW Athletic Department is out of control, just that it is being run by people who for the most part answer to no one as long as they don?t run afoul of the NCAA. As we have seen here and elsewhere, such freedom can be an incubator for problems down the road.

The latest debate began when the UW Athletic Board, which is charged with overseeing the athletic department, unanimously endorsed the recommendation of a self-study committee that significantly altered the relationship between the board and the department by reducing the board?s role in personnel matters. Their reasoning was that the department, which has grown into an $85-million-a-year business, needs the flexibility to make timely decisions on hiring and firing coaches and that such matters should be left to the athletic director and chancellor.

Opposing that viewpoint is a group of faculty members led by Bruce Jones and Jeremi Suri, former athletic board members who took issue with the self-study when it was presented to the UW Faculty Senate in April. They say the faculty policies and procedures document, which dates to the 1930s, stipulates that personnel decisions involving UW coaches must get athletic board approval.

Some saw the whole thing as a power play by athletic director Barry Alvarez to gain even more authority. Alvarez has rarely heard the word "no" since he arrived in Madison as UW?s football coach in 1990 and even ignored state laws ? with the approval of then-chancellor John Wiley ? in 2005 when he named Bret Bielema his successor in football without following proper hiring procedures.

Seems to me that 70-year-old bureaucratic documents could reasonably be subject to some revision: I'm guessing the UW athletic department has undergone some changes in that time.

Barry Alvarez ran a respectable program when he was the Wisconsin coach. He'll be coaching Wisconsin in the bowl game. Don't know if Barry is enough for me to root for Wisconsin in the bowl game though.

Here's a pretty good article on yahoo, may have already been posted in butthead's thread. I'm too young to really remember much other than the games from when Alvarez was coaching, but this comes off as somewhat respectable, even if there are underlying reasons for it.

BA's comments about Ped State possibly going to the ACC are interesting.
Basically, he said Delaney was worried enough about PSU leaving to push forward on Maryland and Rutgers to keep an east coast market presence.
Should Ped State bail.

Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez wants changes to Big Ten scheduling

50965-Baby-Crying-Animated-Gif.gif

Having already played (and beat) defending conference champion Michigan State last week, Wisconsin travels to No. 4 Michigan, has a bye week, then hosts No. 2 Ohio State. They’re not done after that though, traveling to Iowa and then hosting No. 15 Nebraska in a stretch that should determine the West division champion before the month is up.

Longtime head coach and current athletic director Barry Alvarez is well aware of what awaits his team and is no fan of such an unbalanced schedule.

“I remember when that schedule came out (in 2013) and I thought, ‘How the hell did you kick out something looking like that?” Alvarez told CBSSports.com. “I think you could take a look at the general strength of some programs and split them up. Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State have been good for a long time. Penn State Nittany Lions normally is in that group. Just make sure someone doesn’t get all three year in a year. That’s hard to do. That’s something the ADs are going to have to talk about some day.”
