ATH Jaelen Gill (transfer to BC, transfer to Fresno St.)

Am I the only one thinking that he should be brought up when it comes to talking about rb #2 instead of only hb/pivot conversations... to me Gill is a top notch APB and to limit him to the pivot role only on offense imo would be a mistake

Yes.
Used in the proper way, an HB/Pivot can be very special in this offense(I.e. Curtis Samuel, Parris Campbell, Philly Brown). It’s not a slight in the least to have Gill as an HB. That means that he’s seen as being special enough to be not only a RB, but be used in multiple ways in the offense

How do you know what “this” offense even is since we have a first year head coach?

How do you know that Day is keeping the pivot and using it like Urb did?

Gill would get broken in half at RB ... HBack is the perfect position for him he doesnt have the body mass to take many hits at 6’0 and just now getting to 183lbs he has a slender frame he won’t ever be bulky enough to be a true RB just like Parris wasn’t .... he will best be used on the outside

Because Day called the offense this past season. And he was pretty damb creative. I also dont see Yurich coming to OSU and turning the offense into 3 yards a cloud of dust, he also is quite creative

Of course Day won’t let Yurich create 3 yards and a cloud of dust. My point was, I have yet to see whether Day, now as head coach and wholly in charge of HIS offense will keep the pivot in the same way that Urb used it in HIS offense.

Ohio State Football 2018 Freshman Report — HB Jaelen Gill

Jaelen-Gill-Tulane-1000x780.jpg

Jaelen Gill came to Ohio State from nearby Westerville South High School, where he was ranked the No. 2 all-purpose back in the 2018 class and the No. 30 player in the nation overall. He signed with the Buckeyes over offers from Michigan, UCLA, Oklahoma, LSU, Notre Dame, Texas, USC, and many others. He gave some Ohio State fans a bit of a heart attack on the day he committed.

2018 Season
The adjustment period and learning curve involved in becoming an H-back at Ohio State is never an easy or smooth transition. Only Dontre Wilson has ever been able to make an impact at the position as a true freshman, and that was mostly because the Buckeyes were desperate for speed, which he had plenty of.

Generally, the process of a freshman becoming an Ohio State H-back goes how it went for Jaelen Gill last season. Because of the new redshirt rules, Gill did see action in two games, with one catch (11 yards), but ended up redshirting. It didn’t help that he was playing the deepest position on the team, with Parris Campbell, KJ Hill, Demario McCall, and CJ Saunders all in front of him.

Even though Gill played a very similar position in high school, he didn’t need the technique then that he does now. Learning how to be a receiver and the literal and figurative steps involved was a time-consuming process.

“I was comfortable coming in because of stuff I did in high school,” he said after the Rose Bowl. “But as far as breaking down routes and stuff, that’s the part that got me. I’m used to running back steps and all of that, so that was a struggle, but I’m getting a lot better on that. I’ll work with Coach Hartline on that stuff in the offseason.”

Ohio State is loaded with talent once again this season, but much of it is unproven.

The Buckeyes signed their two highest-rated recruiting classes of the modern era in 2017 and 2018, and with those players entering their second and third seasons respectively, it’s their time to make an impact – in many cases, for the first time.

Here are 10 players who will be stepping into larger roles with the team and seem poised for breakout seasons in 2019.

JAELEN GILL – H-BACK – REDSHIRT FRESHMAN
The departure of three of Ohio State's top receivers paves the way for new faces, and one of those is Jaelen Gill.

Gill saw just 15 total snaps in 2018 in a redshirt season, but after the departure of Parris Campbell, the former top-30 player could make an impact at the H-back/slot receiver position behind K.J. Hill.

It's hard to project production for a player who has yet to see any action, but Gill has always had obvious talent and athleticism. Now he also has a clear path to the field.
