I thought you could not transfer within conference and play the same sport and that is exactly what he is doing or am I missing something per usual.

That was a restriction that no longer exists (see Brian Bobek).

Even if it did, it would not apply here as he will not be on scholarship at MSU.

I guess I was not following the transfer rules close enough but with regard to the scholarship his dad says that he hopes to earn one

I think the restriction prevented direct transfers. I'm not sure if it prevented dropping down to Juco and coming back to a B1G school.

Either way it was lifted a few years ago (which most people missed)

I just google searched and couldn't find anything more recent than the transfer news- is he getting any playing time up there?
