Associate HC/DL Coach Larry Johnson Sr. (Official Thread)

After the spring game showing from Jack Sawyer, and reading about his work with LJ Sr. leading up to enrollment, and then looking ahead to the next-next-next-next DE legend recruit in Brenan Vernon JT Tuimoloau... I just thought Coach Johnson deserved a 2021 bump.

Serious question: is LJ Sr. the greatest position coach in CFB history?

I kind of laugh at myself for being somewhat upset over his hire at first and how quickly I got over it. He's maybe the best I've seen because he gets it done in every facet, i.e. recruiting, player development, relationships, etc. Whenever he retires, it is going to be impossible to replace him. We think of the Bosas, Young, up and coming Harrison and Sawyer, but that's just the tip of the iceberg if you think of his body of work at PSU. I know, I shuddered a bit when I typed that.

He has enhanced his reputation as a strong recruiter, spiritual leader and developer of defensive line talent. Beginning in 2014, Johnson has helped Ohio State now land as many as 13 national top 100 defensive linemen. That group includes:

* Virginia’s Jalyn Holmes, ranked 76th overall in the 2014 class;

* Minnesota’s Jashon Cornell, ranked 95th overall in the 2015 class;

* Florida’s Nick Bosa, ranked eighth overall in 2016 class;

* Ohio’s Jonathon Cooper, ranked 33rd in 2016 class;

* Maryland’s Chase Young, ranked seventh in 2017 class;

* Nevada’s Haskell Garrett, ranked 68th in 2017 class;

* Florida’s Taron Vincent, ranked 20th in 2018 class;

* Ohio’s Tyreke Smith, ranked 34th in 2018 class;

* Idaho’s Tommy Togiai, ranked 55th in 2018 class;

* New Jersey’s Tyler Friday, ranked 93rd in 2018 class;

* Ohio’s Zach Harrison, ranked 12th in 2019 class;

* Ohio’s Jack Sawyer, ranked fourth in the 2021 class; and now

* Washington’s J.T. Tuimoloau, ranked third in 2021 class.

He signed only a 1 year extension after the season where everybody else signed 2. I would imagine at his age, he will see how he is feeling and go year by year at this point in his career.

Are you Larry Johnson? (Screen name joke, but if you are please let us know) I'm actually surprised LJ Sr is still coaching, dude won't quit and I love it. Each year we get with him is a blessing, keep him as long as we can.
