THE BEST OF THE BEST.
Larry Johnson's produced three top-five picks in five years, but don't you ask him which one he thinks is best, because you won't get anything out of him! – until he talks some more.

“I’m not saying,” Johnson said with a laugh. “All three have the potential to be the best.”

But he did give a breakdown of the defensive ends.

“Nick is very strong and powerful, a great bender,” Johnson said, referring to his flexibility. “Joey’s a great technician. He stays in his wheelhouse to do exactly what he does best.”

Young, he said, might be the most physically gifted of the three.

“Those are all great athletes, (but) Chase is a different breed,” Johnson said. “He can run. He has great get-off. He can bend. He can drop into coverage. He’s got great hands. So he has a little more things in his toolbox that he can use, but they’re all great players.”

I'm sure my incessant online-ness has turned my brain to mush, but that all reads like "I ain't telling!" followed damn near immediately by "Chase Young. It's Chase Young. Good lord, it's Chase Young."

And who can blame him? The Bosa Brothers were ungodly good – I mean, they were both top-three picks and went on to win defensive rookie of the year – but neither looked like they were assembled in a lab, neither had nine sacks and four forced fumbles across two games against top-10 opponents, and neither averaged a tackle for loss on every tackle.

The Bosa Brothers could not have been better NFL prospects, and then came Chase Young.

SKULL SESSION: LARRY JOHNSON PRODUCES EDGE RUSHERS LIKE NO OTHER, OHIO STATE DOESN'T MAKE BAD HIRES, AND BEN CHRISTMAN ALREADY GETS THE RIVALRY

BEHOLD, LARRY JOHNSON.
There's probably one coach in the country that can challenge Kerry Coombs' proven ability to recruit and develop elite NFL prospects, and he just happens to be on the same staff.

247Sports named Ohio State "DBU" of the decade last week, and now it's time for Larry Johnson to get his due as the Buckeyes are also Edge-U.

1. OHIO STATE

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better resume for any position coach in college football than Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson. His list of edge rushers over just the last five years would be a career’s worth of work for any other coach. Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa and Chase Young were all selected within the top three picks of the NFL Draft. He’s also added second rounder Tyquan Lewis, turned former safety Sam Hubbard into a third-round pick and saw Jalyn Holmes land in the fourth round.

Between defensive backs and edge rushers, Ohio State's had 10 first-round picks in the past seven years, more than half of which were top-five picks.

This rating system wasn't even designed to compute how insane that is (it gives Michigan the same number of points for Taco Charlton and Jabrill Peppers as it does Ohio State Nick Bosa and Jeff Okudah). But regardless, the Buckeyes are in their rightful place at the top.

Coach Johnson is 68 years old. When he does decide to retire he'll definitely be missed. It will be hard (if not impossible) to find someone comparable to him to fill the vacancy. Some people have mentioned Kenny Anunike as a possible successor down the road; but, Johnson's shoes are going to be damn tough to fill.

SKULL SESSION: BUCKEYES EXCEL AT HIRING COORDINATORS, LARRY JOHNSON IS AN INTERIOR LINE GURU TOO, AND TREVEYON HENDERSON RESPONDS TO MESSAGE BOARD RUMORS

THE GODFATHER.
One positive thing that's come out of everyone being damn near bored to death during this time is that it's gifted us with plenty of content as coaches donate their time to extremely thorough and personal interviews because they've got nothing better to do.

I mean shit, two weeks ago we had Chris Holtmann on our podcast talking about changing a tire, his favorite local restaurant and whose ass he'd kick in a one-on-one game (rather, who would kick his ass).

Now, I give you Larry Johnson talking interior defensive line play for almost 15 minutes.

The most common jealous criticism I hear about Larry Johnson is some variation of "anyone can make a five-star prospect great!" First off, that completely ignores that recruiting is part of a coach's job. Second, tell that to UCLA, who's managed to do nothing with two separate five-star top-20 defensive ends recruited two classes apart.

The second and even more head-scratching criticism is that he's actually not all that great at developing interior linemen, just edge pass rushers.

Here's a quick look at why both of those arguments are resoundingly terrible:

At this point, I'm not convinced Larry Johnson couldn't coach *me* (GAP kids blogger body and all) to be an effective defensive lineman.
