Associate HC/DL Coach Larry Johnson Sr. (National Champion)

Is all this LJ succession plan just fun, conjecture or actually something in the works? I haven't read or heard any rumors about it.
Which succession plan? The one for 2025? Yes, it’s real. Just as real as the one for 2024, 2023… 2018, 2017.

I’m sure they’ve had one every year. More recently, I’m guessing they have become more formal.

And I quote, "I just love the Jack position and very much look forward to helping Jim implement it at PSU." - LJ
After reading that out loud and having a good laugh, we can all find that scenario very funny. Because it wouldn't happen given the clear division between the two.

What wouldn't be funny (not directed at you, I got the humor) is if Knowles and LJ Sr drove each other out of Columbus. I want LJ Sr to retire in the S&G, Knowles can keep his PA shit. We need LJ Sr for at least one more year.

There hasn’t been a definitive plan for LJsr yet. And tbh, there is no longer a coaching number limit so in essence they could get both as DL coaches.
Sounds to me that a come-to-Jesus-meeting was held after the Michigan fiasco and that feelings got hurt, especially among the older staff. It ain’t easy being the head coach but sometimes you gotta lay down the law of who’s in charge.
I posted about that meeting in Days thread…

Thanks pnuts. Had escaped me. As far as I'm concerned, LJ can stay as long as he wishes, as long as he/we hire a DL understudy with the same teaching and recruiting chops that he has. Maybe work a semi-retirement deal (it's early, haven't had my coffee yet), so he can train both DL and Asst DL person at same time? Thought the rotate 'em in, to keep them fresh, versus, let the 1's play argument between Knowles and LJ was a bit humerous, as LJ had been doing that for years, to keep his 1's fresh. Anyway, anyone got a tape of the 'after Xichigan' defeat meeting between Day, Knowles and LJ? Would truly love to hear that one......Go Bucks!

We'll probably never get a tape of that. But I did post an article about it in the Day thread

As far as above, only name I've seen hinted at is Cullen. And tbh I have no clue about the man other than he turned his life around from being an alcoholic and is coaching the DL in the Super Bowl. I have no definitive opinion on the man, and honestly I could see this being the hire, but I also could see a left field name come up similar to Bowen. I'm still trying to bask in the glow from the Natty and take the hires as they come

Johnson’s age, and questions about his future, are a topic particularly around recruiting circles.

If a player is unsure about Johnson being in place throughout their playing career, will that create hesitation to commit?

To Sawyer and Tuimoloau, there shouldn’t be much doubt.

“You’ve got to be blessed to have a coach like that,” Tuimoloau said. “I feel like there’s not a lot of coaches like that. For all the recruits out there, that’s one guy you have to go to.”

Former Ohio State football player throws his support behind Larry Johnson

As Larry Johnson contemplates his future, a former Buckeye has given him a comment of support.

There has been a lot of change to the Ohio State football team's coaching staff this year. They have had to replace several critical members of the staff after winning a national championship. Replacing an offensive coordinator, a defensive coordinator, and an offensive line coach is not easy.

While most of the dust has settled around the coaching staff, there is still one big issue that needs to be addressed. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson is still contemplating his future. There's a chance that he decides to retire before this season starts, but he hasn't decided yet.

With just a couple of weeks before Spring ball starts, Johnson needs to make a decision soon. He has been a really good coach for a long time. He got a comment of support from one of his former players who was at the NFL Combine on Wednesday.

Former Ohio State football player Jack Sawyer praises Larry Johnson

Former defensive end Jack Sawyer had only good things to say about Johnson while he was talking to the media at the NFL Combine. Sawyer and fellow DE J.T. Tuimoloau are the last two five-star recruits that Johnson has been able to land.

Despite his age, Sawyer thinks that Johnson is still at the top of his game. It's hard to tell if that is true based on what happened this past season. It seemed once Jim Knowles finally was able to get the defensive line to do what he wanted instead of what Johnson wanted, that's when the defense became the elite unit they were supposed to be.

Sawyer came to Ohio State in part because of Johnson. He recruited him to Columbus and told him that he could develop him. While Sawyer didn't really start becoming a dominant force until last in his senior year, he eventually got there. Now, Sawyer could be a second-round pick.

Ohio State football coach Larry Johnson will coach "Until God tells me to stop"

The Ohio State football team's defensive line coach addressed his future.

The Ohio State football program has had Larry Johnson as their defensive line coach for over a decade now. He's the only coach on staff (besides Mickey Marotti) who was on staff when the Buckeyes won the national championship in 2014. He's now won two national titles with the Bucks.

There have been rumors swirling that Johnson still hasn't decided whether or not he is going to coach this year. Rumors were swirling that if he did come back for this season, it would be his final season. Johnson is someone who has been great at what he does for a while.

Friday morning was the first time that the coaches have been heard from since winning the national championship. Johnson was asked about his future with the team. His answer will make one segment of the Buckeye fanbase happy and one segment very unhappy.

Larry Johnson says he will keep coaching for the Ohio State football program

Johnson doesn't seem ready to hang it up anytime soon. In fact, he gave an interesting answer when asked about his future with the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Johnson seems like he is going to coach for as long as he can. It might take Ryan Day telling him to go away for him to finally retire. Will that happen next year? It's unclear. What is clear is that he will be coaching for the Buckeyes this season. He's still in charge of the defensive line.

A large part of his future could come down to how well he gets along with new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. If he gets along with Patricia, he might try to stay even longer than just a year. If he doesn't, this will likely be the last year that he coaches.
