Is it true that Southerners don't consider it gay to receive?
Crystal? Nah. We can receive crystal for wedding presents and BCSCGs, but not for - like - birthdays or Christmas*.

Crystal is for special occasions - like a 25th wedding anniversary, or a second bass boat.

(* Unless they finally figure out how to make camo colored crystal.)

Yea, I can see Southerners giving each other fast food to commemorate special occasions.

Question: Why don't you defend the honor of the boiled peanut, which some consider the major southern contribution to modern culture?

Because I like them - but it doesn't move me to tears to go without. Boiled Peanuts are a fine accessory snack - but ultimately your tailgate or snacking can go on just fine without them.
