Seriously, have these idiots not heard of a thing called a fake gmail address double backed through two or three other fake gmail addresses before a court order could actually pry loose another gmail address that might vaguely reveal one's identity.

Tails & Tor
Chain your emails across multiple services; makes forensics more cumbersome. E.g., Burn a Tails bootable CD, take a laptop to a WiFi hotspot and use Tor capable browser. Create fake Outlook.com/Windows Live -> fail-over/password recovery to fake Yahoo -> fail-over/password recovery to fake Gmail. Create a bunch of Gmail "burner" accounts so you're not reusing email addresses for anything.
If you need to host data, have a 24/7/365 presence, or want a VPN access point tunnel for other connections, buy a prepaid credit card with cash from a grocery store then register for an Amazon AWS dedicated server instance.
Hardcore users can build a ProxyGambit device.

Or, create a fake email address, register for a free account so you don't have to use any real info, and stalk about until you find someone you know, and then blackmail her for hand jobs.

My hunch is that, at the behest of their lawyers, required a non web based email address for registration to help immunize themselves when one of their users cut another one of their users into pieces.

But when Newitz dug deeper, she found a bunch of test accounts that ended with ashleymadison.com, suggesting that they were created internally (90% of them were for women), as well as 350 female accounts for people with the same and very unusual last name.
Then she found three really damning pieces of data:

- Only 1,492 of the women in the database had ever opened their inbox to check their messages on the site. That's compared with more than 20 million men.
- Only 2,409 of the women had ever used the site's chat function, versus more than 11 million men.
- Only 9,700 of the women had ever responded to a message from another person on the site, versus almost 6 million men. (This number was greater than the number of women who checked messages because it's possible to answer messages in bulk when you first visit the site, without ever opening your inbox.)
Either way, Newitz writes, Ashley Madison is a site where tens of millions of men write mail, chat, and spend money for women who aren't there."
