Apple Software & Mac Hardware news

Here's what's been announced so far today:

  • iOS 5.1 going live. Sounds like mostly bugfixes.
  • iWork, iMovie & GarageBand updated
  • iPhoto released for iPad 2+, iPhone 4+
  • new iPad with Retina display, spec bumps for camera & processor, starts at $499
  • iPad 2 16GB is sticking around, price cut to $399
  • voice dictation coming to iPad (similar to iPhone 4S) seems likely to be exclusive to the new model which is slightly disappointing for me as an iPad 2 user. (iPad 2 and iPhone 4S use the same processor, so keeping this feature away from iPad 2 is classic planned obsolescence by Apple, plain and simple.)

I just ordered "The New iPad" it will ship out on the 16th. I have owned iPhones before but this is my first iPad. I believe I will enjoy it. Buckeyeplanet on the new stunning retina display. :)

I will try to remember to give my impressions after I have recieved and worked with it for a while. The school I work at has many iPad 2's that is passed between classes so I have a basic idea of preformance and uses for the 2nd gen Pad. Passes the look test, that's is for sure.

Today while reveling in the complete awesome that is my new iPad I played a game of Civilization Revolution, yes on my IPad, and then jumped on Buckeye Planet. Looks great and all but how cool would it be if we had a dedicated app for BP? I discovered that you can pin an icon of a web page- in this case buckeye planet.com- to your desktop where you click on it a go straight there. Maybe old news to others but still cool to me.

There's a thread for this in the Administrative forum. Clarity has said that he's exploring options, but that it's not exactly the highest of priorities.

I think the more you use it, the more you'll find that BP is quite well suited to the iPad. The things that you do miss out on are things that aren't gonna be much different in a native app anyway. The main thing I miss by using the iPad for BP is that WYSIWYG doesn't work. You'll need to use the Preview Post function much more to make sure that quotes, links and embedded media are showing up properly.

Even on my dinosaur Motorola Droid, BP's site works and loads great.

Same on iPhone. A native app for a phone though could make it more conducive to longer reading on a phone, less pinching and zooming to tap links and even faster loading times and less battery drain because more of the UI elements are native to the app and not being downloaded every time you load a new page.

I understand why there isn't a BP app imminent and will go on browsing from my phone's browser when I want to, but if an app were to materialize and if it were done well, I'd be glad to use something along those lines.

remember that whole story about FoxConn, and a series exposing continuing ills on the iDevice fabrication lines on NPR's This American Life?

Turns out it was all a tissue of lies.

I have difficult news. We've learned that Mike Daisey's story about Apple in China - which we broadcast in January - contained significant fabrications. We're retracting the story because we can’t vouch for its truth. This is not a story we commissioned. It was an excerpt of Mike Daisey's acclaimed one-man show "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs," in which he talks about visiting a factory in China that makes iPhones and other Apple products.

The China correspondent for the public radio show Marketplace tracked down the interpreter that Daisey hired when he visited Shenzhen China. The interpreter disputed much of what Daisey has been saying on stage and on our show. On this week's episode of This American Life, we will devote the entire hour to detailing the errors in "Mr. Daisey Goes to the Apple Factory."

Daisey lied to me and to This American Life producer Brian Reed during the fact checking we did on the story, before it was broadcast. That doesn't excuse the fact that we never should've put this on the air. In the end, this was our mistake.

Yeah, I think that is what I did. I fully loaded the buckeyeplanet main page. Then clicked the options once the page was loaded and from there I was able to pin the page as a icon just like "email", "photos", etc.
Now I just click the BP icon and I am straight away to a place of endless ramblings and sometimes valuable news.:wink2:

iPhone users better read this:

Colorado Woman's iPhone 4 Combusts

A 51-year-old Colorado woman told Mashable her iPhone 4 burst into smoke just inches from her head last week -- and she has the photos to prove it.

The woman -- who spoke on the condition that her name not be used -- says she was traveling on the East Coast and sleeping alone in a hotel room with the phone plugged in to an Apple charger on the nightstand "12 to 14 inches from my head."

About 6:30am, she awoke to to a strange smell and "sizzling" and "popping" noises. Then came "not quite an explosion, but an immense crackling," as the room filled with smoke.

"It was an awful, putrid smell, almost like you were ingesting plastic of some kind," she said in a phone interview.

con't....
