Apple Software & Mac Hardware news

Yep, Yosemite is out in the wild right now, and I'm debating upgrading today or waiting for the first set of patches/bug fixes like I prefer to do. Swift and Continuity are very interesting to me, so that's why I'm having an upgrade itch on the first day (plus Keynote, and its free).

Just did the update to Yosemite and it is definitely a big difference in the graphical style than what I've gotten used to the last few years. I don't dislike it or like it yet, just very different.

I wasn't sure about it at first, but it's growing on me.

I've noticed an issue when I'm browsing though that portions of my screen with flash & random blocks pop up. This occurred before the upgrade though...I notice it mostly on BP.....

Apple Introduces A Reinvented MacBook, Starting At $1299

...

The new laptop weighs just 2 pounds and is 13.1 mm thick, 24 percent thinner than the 11-inch MacBook Air. The 2304 by 1440 display is technically Retina-quality, a first for the Air line. The processor is a Core M, one of Intel’s ultra-low-power chips that’s been included on some recent hybrid tablet-laptop devices from Windows OEMs. Apple is promising “all-day battery,” with 9 hours of web or 10 hours of HD video.

The new MacBook will launch April 10 for $1,299, and will include 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD in the entry-level model. As with the iPad and iPhone lines, the new Mac will come in Silver, Space Gray and Gold versions

A couple years ago I scoffed at the idea of a laptop with no optical drive. A couple months ago I bought one. I suspect this will turn out much the same way. It's not really practical today, but it's pointing the way forward. We're able to connect so readily through the cloud, wi-fi, bluetooth, etc. that USB is becoming less and less important.

My MacBook Pro only has two USB ports. I've never occupied more than one at a time, and never used the HDMI or Thunderbolt ports. The truth is, the only thing that would stop me from going to that kind of setup on the right machine now is that you also charge through that port.

The lack of HDMI-out and an SD card slot are perhaps the biggest head scratcher to me.

I mothballed my road warrior Targus bag a long time ago, but from my experience when I needed a laptop -- not wanted one, but actually needed one for work -- I had to have output options to a projector and media copy options if I were doing an onsite and security or policy prohibited me from plugging my hardware into what was provided in the conference room.

Same here, on my MacBook Pro, I've used the USB once. And I didn't have to use it then. With all the wireless means of connecting, it's largely a dinosaur with the exception of very large files. And I expect that ultimately wireless will handle the large files as well.

I don't and never will trust "the cloud" for important data, whether for storage or for transfer. And wireless data transfer is inherently more insecure than a hard connection.
