Apple Software & Mac Hardware news

I really like it so far. Was worried about lag with the 4, but I actually think it's a little quicker than iOS 6.

I have to say that for the first time since moving to a MBP in 2010 and iPad (3rd generation), iPhone 4S, and MBPr in 2012 and having updated my OSX and iOS with every continually, I feel like Apple really screwed me with this update. I actually use AirDrop and AirPlay and to not have those two features available on a 3rd gen iPad and iPhone 4s is really crappy. My 2010 MBP can use those features, but my newer devices can't? Give me a break...

iOS7 Do not like. (I have a 4S)

Icons are shit, I am not a 13 yo girl

Damn bottom swipe menu is annoying as all fuck when trying to scroll pages.

Made it even harder to type with my big fat fingers (or so it seems)

Overall, I think it was not worth the "upgrade"

I really need to be more regular with backing up stuff, especially my pictures. I probably have around 100GB to slide over to my external just in images and Lightroom data before I sweep my hard drive and do a clean install of Mavericks. Hopefully I'll have it done by tomorrow night, but it will probably take a few days to make sure I have everything backed up (I prefer to do it manually). I really want to see if Safari 7 is a marked improvement over 6, because it has been giving me a TON of problems the last few weeks. Plus, I just kind of want the new shiny since its free.

Just finished with the update, and look forward to watching the memory compression in action tomorrow morning, although I feel like I'm already seeing it with the slower pace of the text appearing relative to my typing.

So this morning my 1 3/4 year old MBPr just flat out died. Tech support says SSD HD failure. What are the chances of data recovery and any suggestions on approach?

This is BS. The put hardware in their top-of-the-line laptops that fails after less than 2 years of use? Anyone else heard of similar issues?

Sorry to hear that. Was he able to get any of the data recovered? Was thinking about trying DriveSavers. From everything I read they are expensive, but very good.

This gives me serious pause about buying another laptop with a SSD.

Nothing valuable should ever be saved on a ssd without a backup . The performance is great the reliability is not.

He wasn't able to recover anything, but only the OS and a game or two were installed on the drive. Everything else was on a HDD.

Thanks for all of the advice. Fortunately I was only a week behind on my backups, BUT I had done a lot during that week. As a result, I sent the SSD to DriveSavers in California and they were able to recover all of the data from the HD. An expensive endeavor for sure, but they are the best. If you find yourself in a critical spot between backups, I'd highly recommend their services.
