Apple Software & Mac Hardware news

iPad 2 is still very relevant. Use mine every day and feel no need to upgrade to a newer model.

Problem is, then what's the point of having my iPhone 5?

I want a bigger screen, but at the same time I really want a device that can do it all. Kind of stuck. iPhone makes calls/texts, iPad bigger screen = better browsing. Tough call.

Use both?

If it's a one-or-the-other proposition, then get the phone. If you can swing both though, go for it. You'll find that while both devices do pretty much the same things, you'll find after using them both that there are certain things you'll prefer to use each for.

I have the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Just because a device can do everything doesn't mean it's the best one for everything. I can browse the web and watch video on my phone, but its much better on the larger screen of the iPad - especially if you're going to spend more than five minutes at it. Conversely, I can read my Twitter feed and play games and listen to music on my iPad, but I prefer to do it on a device that fits easily in to the palm of my hand.

I guess what I'm saying is, if you already have an iPhone and are thinking about adding an iPad, don't hesitate to find a deal on an iPad 2 instead of paying full retail for a newer model. The iPad 2 is still a great option in my IMO.

I agree with the bolded statement to an extent. After a owning a series of various other machines though, my next clamshell computer is going to be a Mac - and it'll be for hardware reasons. Granted, you'll always be able to get more for your money buying a Windows machine when it comes to processing power. That's not the hardware I'm talking about though. I don't need processing power to dick around on the internet and rip CDs to my HDD. I'll buy a Mac because the things that always fail or suck on my current and past machines are pretty much worry-free on a Mac - hinge, power supply, battery, trackpad, fan and heat sink, optical disc tray, etc.

I'm jealous of my wife's MacBook Pro. She bought it seven years ago and the only problems that she has had with it have been because she beats the shit out of the thing. I take care of my computers, and I still find myself replacing them after 3-4 years because they fall apart. Just because I can replace my machine three times over for the amount she paid for one MacBook doesn't mean I want to keep doing that. I mean, I already have replaced my computer that many times since she bought hers, so who's coming out ahead?

The main thing that stops me from taking the plunge is the software. I'm a Windows person. It's what I know, and I'm not sure I want to learn a Mac or adapt my workflow to a different way of doing things.

Hate to tell you, but the same stuff that is in a Mac you can find in a PC. They use Intel processors and chipsets. They use NVidia GPU's or the integrated Intel one. They use a wide array of hard drives that are used by the same PC makers (they often use Samsung and Toshiba). They use the same RAM and the same power supply suppliers. They use Samsung and LG display panels. It's all the same stuff. The problem with PC buyers is they buy low end to mid range computers, and then compare them to Macs. Macs are high end. If you buy a high end PC (check out some of the stuff from Samsung), you will get the same exact stuff. Literally in some cases. Apple makes absolutely nothing for their computers, and the only thing they design is the package (which is many cases has become a nightmare to work with if it does require repair). PCs at or near the same price will give you the same hardware, and often better if you are ok with a slightly larger package.

That is something that always ticks me off. People point to Apple's repair numbers and think "oh, they are good." Well yeah, they only sell expensive stuff. It better be good. The fact they get beaten out from time to time by other companies who sell a wide array of computers from dirt cheap to super high end shows that Apple is nothing special. I wish the companies that put out reliability data would split things into price points. I have a feeling it would not go well for Apple. Yet hey, they do have good customer service when things do go wrong (although some PC makers do provide upgraded customer service with their more expensive offerings).

Pretty sure they have other costs besides raw materials.
Which are more than offset by the app sales. Many Apple products are great enough to demand a high premium, especially since many offer a better product than anything from their competitors.

The iPad mini does not meet that standard.

Smarter Stand for the iPad Smart Cover - I ordered these thru Kickstarter a couple months ago, and they finally arrived this morning. They unlock a wide variety of viewing/typing angles for your iPad. It's more versatile than most other case/stand options while maintaining the simplicity and portability of the original Smart Cover. Highly recommended. I went for red (scarlet) clips to go with my gray cover, of course.

So what do those of you who have a Mac do when you open excel and all those keyboard shortcuts go the fuck away.

I have to spend a few days working on our macs to relearn all my muscle memory shortcuts. Any way to remap that you know of?

iPhone-iPad-MacBook-iPod.......Soon I won't actually have to have a conversation with anyone face to face. Also can listen to music and movies without actually being in public. I wonder if I can get a career in iWork? Send the money via my tablet or phone or laptop to my iBank. I wonder if I can get an iMaid to clean my iResidence?

I send this post via a MacBook in case anyone is wondering.:wink2:
