I wish Apple would add a safeguard for stupidity by recording all videos horizontally unless the user specifies otherwise. I'm so tired of seeing youtube clips that are 2 inches wide.

When people hold up their smartphones to record something, 90% of them are vertical :shake:

And people claim Apple products are easy to use.... I'm surprised they don't have the camera limited to one setting or mode :)

Google Maps vs. Apple Maps

The biggest change—among many—in iOS 6 will undoubtedly be Apple's new Maps app. And though its turn-by-turn directions, Flyover and oh so sweet Siri look promising, the real question is how Apple's maps will compare to Google's.

Here's a side by side comparison of the two, so you can see for yourself. It may have you wishing Apple hadn't gone it alone quite yet.

It's admittedly a little unfair to judge Apple Maps since it hasn't even passed beta yet, but it doesn't change the fact that Apple's offering has to be great to not be a failure. And it's also worth noting that Siri proved Apple's not afraid to put an incomplete feature on an iPhone.

No iPhone user wanted to kill Google Maps. It makes me uneasy to even think about a phone without it. If you're replacing something as ubiquitous and functional as Google Maps, you had better be just as good. Or as a wise man from the streets once said, "If you come at the king, you best not miss."

I'm contemplating buying a macbook pro, with purchasing one for school I get a free $100 itunes gift card. Would anybody here be interested in buying said gift card? I really don't have a use for it.

You wouldn't want to use it for the Mac App Store? Software for your new machine?

For now, I am absolutely loving my jail-broken 3Gs. I wish I would have done it a long time ago. Now its the wait to see what the new iPhone will be like and then make my upgrade decision.

Here's my home-screen for my iPhone

Hardware Advice

My job is willing to pony up for a new machine and I've got it narrowed down and would love your input.

Option #1 - MBP - Retina w/ 2.3 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, turbo boost up to 3.3 GHz, 16 GB RAM 256 GB Flash Storage

Option #2 - 13" Macbook Air Maxed w/ 2.0 GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i7, turbo boost up to 3.2 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB Flash Storage)

I'm a scientist, so some stats programs, graphing programs, MS Office, Adobe Photoshop. I'm planning to add the 27" Thunderbolt display (I currently have a 19" external monitor) to enhance desktop work, but will also be traveling with this computer into classrooms for teaching purposes.

My recommendation - go with the MBP. The MBPs have slimmed down a lot in recent months and you get more computing muscle. In terms of specs, the only place the Air as the MBP beat is storage, and that can be remedied with external flash/HDD storage or cloud services.

If you can get to an Apple Store, it might be worth it for you to get and idea of the form factor of each. If portability is important - they're both very portable but you may find one more to your liking than the other.

I own neither - I have an HP laptop. In the next couple years when I'm in the market again though I'm probably going with MBP.
