Appalachian State 34, Michigan 32 (Final!)

I'll never forget that day. At was at Costco watching the final play on one of their big screens.
Ohio State was playing YSU at the same time as the UM-App St. game. So the only thing that comes to mind when you say that you were at Costco watching this game on their big screens is the FloTV "injury report" commercial with Jim Nantz.

How about lavender? How about not.

I may be completely misinterpreting this reference. Don't know the commercial. Are you saying it wasn't possible?

The OSU game ended about a full quarter before the tSUN/Appy game. BTN went directly from the OSU game to coverage of the tSUN/Appy game. I watched it at the Arena Grand.

Isn't the "ugly" assumed?

"Ugly" can be inferred regarding any noun that is modified by the word M*ch*g*n, i. e.,
[ugly] M*ch*g*n helmet, [ugly] M*ch*g*n stadium, [ugly] M*ch*g*n attitude, etc. etc. etc.

The commercial is on youtube. It also gets played several times a day on the channels that I normally watch. The commercial is about a man that can't watch a game because his wife made him go shopping with her. That's what came to mind when he said that he was shopping at Costco when the Ohio State - YSU game had just ended.

Also, I was hammered by the time BTN switched to the App State - Mich game. So my concept of time was probably way off, but it seemed like much, much less than a full quarter. I guess it's entirely possible that DubCoffman went shopping after tOSU game was over, but my visualization of what happened is much funnier. :wink2:

Now that you've described it, I do recognize the commercial.

It may be my memory that is off, given the golden halo of delirium that surrounds my recollection of that game. But, I recall there was enough time left that the lead changed hands while we were watching, because I had a moment of "Oh (censored), tSUN is going to escape after all". None of which is nearly as important as the final outcome, which is holding up better than a magnum of Rothschild.

This could probably be its own thread, but I figured (given the subject matter) that it would most appropriately be put here to begin with because it helps me make my point....as such...

On Any Given Saturday

The night before James Madison University pulled off the biggest upset of the 2010 college football season, Dukes coach Mickey Matthews asked his players if any of them made a recruiting visit to Virginia Tech.

None of the Dukes raised his hand.

"I promise you they're going to want a lot of you after tomorrow," Matthews told his team.

Matthews' promise proved prophetic as the Dukes did the unimaginable Saturday, shocking the No. 13 Hokies 21-16 at Lane Stadium. It was Virginia Tech's first home loss to a Football Championship Subdivision foe since falling to Richmond 24-14 in 1985.

"The dirty little secret is the top six to eight teams at our level can play with anyone," Matthews said. "We struggle to find guaranteed games because no one wants to play us. I don't know if we're a Top 25 team on the FBS level, but I'm sure we're better than Virginia Tech wanted us to be. They needed to play somebody they could dominate."

More and more, FBS teams are having difficulty beating FCS foes, let alone dominating them. FBS teams looking for easy victories might have more luck scheduling New Mexico than FCS teams like James Madison.

In the first two weeks of the season alone, five FCS teams have defeated FBS opponents: Jacksonville (Ala.) State stunned Ole Miss 49-48 in two overtimes, North Dakota State beat Kansas 6-3, South Dakota defeated Minnesota 41-38, Gardner-Webb beat Akron 38-37 in overtime and Liberty shocked Ball State 27-23.

It was the second time in as many seasons that James Madison had an ACC opponent on the ropes. In their 2009 opener, the Dukes led Maryland 35-28 late in the second half before losing 38-35 in overtime.

"There are great players, no matter what league or what division," James Madison quarterback Drew Dudzik said. "We've got great players. We just don't have the same number of scholarships and don't have the depth. It just goes to show that on any given day anyone can beat anyone."

Appalachian State proved that point when it stunned Michigan 34-32 at Michigan Stadium on Sept. 1, 2007.

So when App State went to TSUN and beat a team that was clearly over-rated, it was because the Big Ten was "weak and slow". But now E$PN is attempting to make the case that it could happen at any time, anywhere.

My first thought was that eSPIN is only about 4 years behind the power curve here, but the second, more conspiratorial thought is that somehow, someway, eSPIN is attempting to make a case that James Madison is indeed good enough to beat anyone on any given Saturday.

To get even more conspiratorial (and I'm not one to usually believe in such things), eSPIN MIGHT be attempting to justify its hype of Boise State's near miracle victory (or EPIC chokejob by VaTEch) because now Boise State's marquee win is over a team that lost to a 1-AA team.

I may be wayyyyyyyyyyyy off, but that is what popped into my mind when I read this POS column.

Did you go undercover or have back up with you?

I went to the Shoe in 2000 when I was 16 with my dad. Had some good experiences and some bad ones. I wasn't worried because my dad was a badass.

Appalachian State to study possible move to FBS

BOONE, N.C. (AP) -- Appalachian State has knocked off one of college football's top teams. Now the Mountaineers are thinking about joining the big boys.

The school, known for its stunning upset of Michigan in 2007 and its three straight national titles last decade, announced Thursday it will evaluate shifting from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Bowl Subdivision.

The feasibility study could take up to a year.

"With the changing Division I landscape and the unprecedented success that our football program has enjoyed on and off the field in recent years, the time is right to analyze all of our options as a Division I athletics department and football program,'' athletic director Charlie Cobb said.

Appalachian State joins fellow Southern Conference member Georgia Southern and Montana in beginning discussions about moving to the FBS.

The Mountaineers won three straight national championships from 2005-07 and have led the FCS in attendance the past three years. Appalachian State, which recently renovated its stadium, is averaging 28,963 fans in two home games this season as it seeks a sixth straight Southern Conference title.
