So instead of the final score of the FCS Championship Game that won them the title, App St put the score of the Michigan game on their National Championship rings?

Nice!

I don't understand that. App State probably beat 5 teams that year that were better than Michigan. Beating Michigan these days is nothing to be proud about.

The hyperbole is strong with this one.

For a team full of undersized athletes, it absolutely still is.

Winning NCs was commonplace for ASU. Beating Big Blue at their house is a bigger feather in their cap.

:roll2:

Not really, App State played the following schedule after beating the scUMmers:

Lenior-Rhyne
Northern Arizona
Wofford
Elon
Gardner-Webb
Georgia Southern
Furman
Citadel
Western Carolina
Chattanooga
James Madison
Eastern Washington
Richmond
Delaware

(I think those last 3 were playoff games)

The only teams within 30 of Michigan on that schedule (unless another miracle happens) is Delaware and maybe Georgia Southern. The rest of those teams get destroyed.

And beating Michigan even when they suck is something to be remembered. Sorry about that, it's just the way it is. You'd have to have a collapse ala the post-Jordan/Pippen Bulls in combination with the post Gordie Howe Red Wings (of the late 70s and early 80s) to even start getting to where teams aren't looking forward to take a shot at Michigan.

Plus, that was a scUM team with very real (legit or not) National Championship aspirations that they snuffed out with one glorious blocked FG.

Michigan wasn't going to compete for a national title that year. Anybody that follows Michigan football closely and isn't biased would have known that. I thought that team would go 11-2 because I knew that defense would give up points/yardage and it would cost them a game or two.

Everybody got all excited when Michigan went 11-2 in 2006. That team struggled to get by Ball State that year and Ball State actually had a chance to win that game. I think Michigan overachieved that year. Then they played an actual team in USC and got ran over in the Rose Bowl.

If you felt that way, you were in the very small minority. Everybody expected a MNC that year that I saw. Hell, I even saw 2007 National Championships for sale before the season.

They were pre-season top 5, correct?

I remember that scUM team having lots of National Championship aspirations as well. Maybe the die-hard scUM fans didn't expect it, but saying that the team was not expected to be in contention is just kidding yourself.
