Anyone capable of discussing gas without politics? Anyone?

Not to bring you down, but the Energy Department says that the production of ANWR oil will bring down oil prices by less than 50 cents a gallon, or about 1%.

50 cents a gallon or a barrel?

I'm not too crazy about the ANWR simply because there needs to be more of an effort on a solution to reduce our dependency on oil. Drilling there simply buys us time, which is fine as long as we look at alternative fuel sources. As my old boss used to say "Why beat down the alligator when you can drain the pit."

The gas station by my house is at $2.24 for regular. I don't have a car, so I don't notice the direct impact. . .

It is pretty low here all things considered-- the midwest takes big hits with gas prices (compared to the prices of other goods).

Whatever happened to the Geo Metro? :) (I loved seeing an add for the new hybrid Accord. It gets the same gas mileage as my 1986 Accord from high school. Wow are we making progress. . . :p )

Yeah- No shit... Didn't Audi 4000's from the 80's get something like 55 miles to the gallon?

Hybrids are so effing stupid... but I've been on that rant a few times. (Can someone please tell me how they are hybrid? Hybrid like a fucking Diesel submarine... Oops.. the rant almost started)

That was supposed to be barrel. Nice catch, makes a big difference, eh? (and makes the 1% drop make no sense. . .) I changed it. . .

It is a hell of a lot more fun to beat the crap out of an alligator than it is to drain a pit.

$2.29 here in Akron when I filled up this morning...

not sure how much it was in Canton when I left.

Damn people... $28 to fill up my flippin Mustang.

Something, such as a computer or power plant, having two kinds of components that produce the same or similar results.

It's a hybrid by definition.. an electric motor plus a gasoline motor.. two components that produce the same or similar results... making the car go forward...

Don't see how you can argue that??? Although I wasn't part of the earlier convo.. so who cares.

On some of your posts you refer to cars that used to get better mileage.
In many cases those cars got heavier due to safety measures and pollution controls.
Those same pollution controls probably had an impact on efficiency.
No one buys a 4 cylinder engine anymore. They might now though. Remember the old smoke spewing VW rabbit diesels?

We had a Ford Pinto.
It was small, underpowered and ugly but it got great mileage as long as no one hit you in the rear end.:)

Some of this price hike is just speculation and mid market guys making money. Same with the oil companies.

We need to do something to meet our energy needs. I just don't see the majority of products that are moved by truck and rail being moved by a hybrid. I saw today where a Chinese car company has warned that sales there are slowing down. Perhaps their sleeping giant of an economy will nap a little longer and the demand for energy from them will slow down also. I also read where a few of the platforms out in the gulf that got hammered by the hurricanes are coming back on line. Too little, too late?

I'm around $40 bucks a tank, fucking premium is $2.44 a gallon at the cheapest place I can find it. I love my car, but premium only is a bitch.

Fucking Germans/Arabs.

Metro card in Gotham just went from $70 to $77 per month.....

No car requires premium no matter what the car dealer tells you.
Thump - not sure I agree with you here, esp with turbocharged cars. With forced induction, you get some pretty tremendous compression figure (like over 12:1 relative to normally aspirated). The higher octane gas provides pre-ignition suppression at these higher compressions (ie - anti knock). Knocking in your engine means the air-fuel mixture is igniting prematurely, and therefore combustion is taking place before the intake value is completely closed. You do this long enough, trust me, you will roast your valves. (I have seen it).

I think any car with higher compression should use gas with a higher octane.

the dealer did not tell me, I feel pretty confident that I know much more about cars than any deuchebag working at some dealership. It is clearly spelled out in the owners manual. I know it will run on regular, I have done it. But there is a noticeable difference in performance. It has been widely discussed, and tested. You get poorer fuel mileage on regular gas, and the engine performance goes down. It is basically a wash. If you put cheaper gas in the car runs shitty. Most people may never notice, and most people probably don't care, but I do.

NYB,

It's a fact, no car despite what they tell you, requires premium gasoline.

Just call Triple AAA or anyone associated with the travel industry and they will tell you.

So if you know it can run on regular I guess it's up to you, do you want to sacrifice performance for cost?

If you do not then you really don't have room to complain about purchasing premium.

They don't require it to run, but they run a hell of a lot better with it. You can live on White Castles,or Ramen Noodles, but you don't eat them every day. You feel a hell of a lot better if you mix in a salad, or some fish now and then. NYB is on the right track, if your car is not firing in the most efficient manner then you are not burning your fuel efficiently. The car will run, but it will knock, and ping, and your mileage will suffer. I have tested it. In the bitter cold, the shitty gas actually will fire a little quicker, and could help with the initial startup, but overall my mileage has suffered by 5-8 mpg when fueled with regular gas, I have measured it. I have this argument regularly with my wife. I try to not let her drive my car much, but when she does, she gets afflicted with the "heimer" syndrome and will not put premium gas in it. Every time it happens I can tell within 2 minutes of starting my car and driving out of my neighborhood.
