Anti-trust lawsuit against NCAA

When Gene Smith gets an 18k bonus for an individual athlete's national title, something isn't right.

Not to say he should have gotten that amount, it's not uncommon for the head of a $100 Million+ plus enterprise to get a bonus when certain things go right within the program. Just depends on how you want to look at it I guess.

If Athletic departments are forced to pay wages on top of scholarship money to players in all sports (there is zero chance this will stay a football only thing), this ruling is only going to limit opportunities for athletes in the non-revenue sports. Maybe the schools will ignore and/or get around the NLRB's ruling, but only time will tell.

It's an issue when the main argument for not paying players is that they're already being compensated with a quality education. A lot of them aren't, for a variety of reasons. It's just a part of the facade.

That's part of growing up and being an adult. they aren't kids (legally) anymore. If they don't want to put the effort into making something of the gift of a free education, that's on them. cut the umbilical cord, people can't have their hands held forever.

I wish I'd gotten an opportunity to play a fucking GAME and get my education paid for. Apparently not having a flashy car and spending cash while doing so isn't enough for the Playstation Generation.

So, I guess this is limited to private schools at the moment. So, now private schools will have a competitive advantage. I agree that this spells the end of college sports as we've known it. It was great while it lasted. I find myself more in favor of ORD's D-League idea now. If they're paid players, then quit pretending to be students.

I guess on the bright side is if the college football model (as we know it) collapses and the D-league idea comes to fruition, maybe ESPiN will take such a hit that they'll fire shit

This is what happens when you take kids who shouldn't be in a university setting and put them in one. That doesn't change the fact that these advertised quality educational experiences aren't happening and everyone knows it. I enjoy college sports, but I'm not going to shed any tears for Mr. Five Star Linebacker who can't dick around in Staying Eligible 101 anymore or the universities that do whatever they can to perpetuate the bullshit.

Today's decision was made before the petition was ever filed. We're talking about Chicago, unions, Obama's NLRB, all of those wonderful dues that would be collected from college athletes, and the political contributions those new unions could make in the future.

Oh, that's right, it's about the students.

I see what you're saying - however, isn't that on the student? Oh wait, this is America in 2014, we've got to hold everyone's hands now, I forgot. OH yeah and make excuses for it. It would help if the schools would make athletes responsible for their own behavior too, but that is also another topic for another time.

And yes, Playstation Generation. Don't like it? Too bad. We live in a society where people want to make careers out of being professional gamers and Youtubers.

This is the end of college football. Congrats. Hope your enjoy what's left.

These stupid kids have no idea the can of worms they opened. In 5 years college football won't resemble what it is now. It's going to change and in a big way, and I have no idea what way. Either college football will die in favor of a minor league, most of the rest of college athletics will disappear or they will lose their scholarship, millions of kids losing out, or 2/3rds of all colleges will no longer play football because they can't afford it, or they have to treat all scholarshiped students as employees, that would include all sports, all academics, etc. There is no scenario I can think of where this ends well and the only student athletes that benefit are the football players within the next 5 years, at the cost of many many more students. Thank you steelworkers unions and liberal chicago politics planting these ideas in these football players' heads.

Is what on the student? Failing to do anything useful when they're put into a situation that they were never qualified to be in in the first place just to satiate peoples' love of watching other people play games? I find having unrealistic expectations to be a fruitless exercise, doesn't have anything to do with hand holding.

Tell me about walking to school up hill both ways, Johnny Carson, and how your father beating the shit out of you made you a better person.
