When Gene Smith gets an 18k bonus for an individual athlete's national title, something isn't right.
I wonder what America's going to do without all of those general studies majors around to lead the nation into the future.
Not surprised at all. Hope you all enjoyed the ride, because college athletics as we know and love are about to end, as is the opportunity for these kids to get quality education via scholarships.

It's an issue when the main argument for not paying players is that they're already being compensated with a quality education. A lot of them aren't, for a variety of reasons. It's just a part of the facade. What they do with the schollie isn't the issue here - the opportunity to do so and then eventually seeing it go away is....

So, I guess this is limited to private schools at the moment. So, now private schools will have a competitive advantage. I agree that this spells the end of college sports as we've known it. It was great while it lasted. I find myself more in favor of ORD's D-League idea now. If they're paid players, then quit pretending to be students.
This is what happens when you take kids who shouldn't be in a university setting and put them in one. That doesn't change the fact that these advertised quality educational experiences aren't happening and everyone knows it. I enjoy college sports, but I'm not going to shed any tears for Mr. Five Star Linebacker who can't dick around in Staying Eligible 101 anymore or the universities that do whatever they can to perpetuate the bullshit. That's part of growing up and being an adult. they aren't kids (legally) anymore. If they don't want to put the effort into making something of the gift of a free education, that's on them. cut the umbilical cord, people can't have their hands held forever.
I wish I'd gotten an opportunity to play a fucking GAME and get my education paid for. Apparently not having a flashy car and spending cash while doing so isn't enough for the Playstation Generation.

Is what on the student? Failing to do anything useful when they're put into a situation that they were never qualified to be in in the first place just to satiate peoples' love of watching other people play games? I find having unrealistic expectations to be a fruitless exercise, doesn't have anything to do with hand holding.I see what you're saying - however, isn't that on the student? Oh wait, this is America in 2014, we've got to hold everyone's hands now, I forgot. OH yeah and make excuses for it. It would help if the schools would make athletes responsible for their own behavior too, but that is also another topic for another time.
Tell me about walking to school up hill both ways, Johnny Carson, and how your father beating the shit out of you made you a better person. And yes, Playstation Generation. Don't like it? Too bad. We live in a society where people want to make careers out of being professional gamers and Youtubers.
