I'd suggest going with cyanogenmod if you are going to install a custom rom. Which galaxy s phone do you have?

Except for the Fascinate. I liked the way it looked and responded (especially WiFi tether was not an Ad-Hoc, but a true Wifi that could run the PS3). The problem was it shut itself down every day without fail at random times. The battery life was bad, though it improved with one specific nightly build I used, and the data (both wifi and 3G) would not work as much as it would. Also, I had the Fascinate car dock that had the power and Aux ports built in and there was only a few nightlies that supported the auxillary out.

That's why you should just stick with the RC's or stable releases only.

I think i'm gonna start seriously considering rooting my droid x, any idea where to start looking on best ways to do it? I'm not phone savy at all (first smartphone i've owned) so I don't know all the ins and outs of the phone..

my phone is really starting to bog down (haven't had it for even a year yet) and been freezing every so often

Had the same experience. Was experiencing force closes like crazy, we're talking like every 5 minutes everything on the phone crashed. What I did was do a complete wipe, reflash CM7.1.0, and voila. Been running with nary a force close since early December.

CM7.1.0 for Fascinate with Instructions

Like I said, after about 3 days of these issues, I just did a factory reset, wiped everything, and reflashed.

A few months ago, Liam spent some time with 17 mobile security apps, one of which was an app called Cerberus. He came away quite impressed - so impressed, in fact, that he crowned it the winner (and, as a license is just $4, it was also crowned the best for the budget-minded).
The app is always free to download and comes with a 1 week free trial, but a lifetime license is normally $4. I say normally because, as you have likely deduced from the title, the developer is offering free lifetime licenses in celebration of hitting 100,000 users.

To get the license, just download the app and register an account (it requires a username, password, and email address - nothing tricky), then hit fill out the form and hit Submit. The developers will take care of the rest. The promotion ends with the month (by GMT standards), so better move fast - you only have a few days left!

I downloaded the Cerberus app, and it is unbelievable. I started messing around with it and you can have the app take a picture (front or rear), record audio, grab screen shot, record video, wipe the handset, among other things directly from the Cerberus Dashboard website.

Great find.
