american idol gay bashing

From Clarity's December 22 Announcement:

I'm not just trying to create a false air of 'ownership' when I say that BP is what the user base makes it. That's absolutely true. 99% of the time, BP is the better for it. Sometimes, however, it works against us.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
All I want to do here, is make sure that everyone feels empowered to step up and constantly make BP a better place. Every single one of us, certainly myself included, has slipped a little bit as of late. Either we're worried about the repercussions of addressing a problem, or we choose to turn a blind eye to an issue, or we just want to avoid controversy, or we're SO damn used to being the voiceless, powerless, ignored 'visitors' of someone else's site, that we just don't really know how to take command, take a bit of ownership, and steer the ship in the right direction.

Every single person on BP, to a last, at some point as needed an adjustment, needed a correction, or has needed to be smacked upside their head. That's just a fact of life, and it doesn't reflect poorly on anyone. On the contrary, that as a community we're ready, willing and able to listen to one another, and consider other perspectives, opinions and concepts -- it speaks positively of us as a whole.

We don't cater to people who whine and complain, we *do* cater to ourselves. BP is better than the perception that too many are coming away from it with. What we have to be most aware of, is the presence of recruits, recruit's families and friends, etc. We don't want anyone, them most of all, coming away with the false notion that BP, Ohio State fans, Ohio State, or the state of Ohio, are in any way racist, intolerant, ignorant, or the like.

This site is supposed to be about having any conversation that needs to be had, any time. It is about that, but we have to adjust ourselves now and again in order to maintain and preserve that freedom of expression. In order to continue to correct ourselves as users, we have to protect and preserve the foundation that affords us the 'open' atmosphere we so enjoy.

BP is not a racist, hateful, homophobic, misogynistic community. It's not an intolerant community. But we come across at times, as all of the above. While I'm certainly concerned about how we're perceived, I'm far more concerned with what and how we *are*. This is about taking a good hard look at ourselves (as a whole), and asking "how can we be better?"

The minute we stop asking that, is the minute we're really not that different from most other fan communities. So let's set aside our pride for a moment, and take inventory, address the issues that need to be addressed. One doesn't stay the 'best' by resting on their laurels, they use themselves as a measuring stick, and 'compete' against that, constantly trying to improve. We can't stop doing that here. It's on every single one of us -- even you lurkers who never post, to take some of this on, and make BP a better place.

OK, let's run with this for a bit. Let's say that we end up getting a couple Michigan fans as members who end up as well-mannered, articulate, respectful, and admired as "outsiders" as are EngineerHorn, High Lonesome, TSKCoug, etc.--"outside" members who never talk trash, always respect this board and our university, and who readily bring honest appraisals of their own programs. What if they started complaining about "Fuck Michigan" and "Michigan sucks"?

Or, since it seems we're concerned about how true "outsiders" (non-members)--such as families of potential recruits or even recruits themselves, and members of the staff and administration of Ohio State--what if potential recruits or even verbals who live in Michigan (such as Gant) or members of the staff or administration of Michigan take exception to "Michigan bashing". Do we cease?

I'm being dead serious here...

I'd love to debate this with you, Mili, but you're going to have to give me a realistic scenario, not this fantasy wherein intelligent, articulate, non-bashing scUM fans actually exist...:wink2:

So what if someone at the University said they hated "homo's" does that mean then we wouldn't allow for people to not bash gays?
'Encouraging verbal assaults mirroring a twisted administration' (your hypothetical) in no way compares to 'refraining from hateful speech at the request of a PC administration' (our situation).

BTW, you guys will notice I haven't been throwing "homo" around much at all lately so don't blame me for this one. I just called a guy an ice dancer and will continue to use that word as long as I live unless we have some ice dancers on here who are offended!

No more of the following:

Gay
Homo
Fag
Limp Wristed
Butt Pirate
Pole Polisher, Pole Washer, or anything requiring poles
Grape Smuggler

Or any other insensitive remarks referring to the rainbow worshiping side of society.

This isn't a fucking Bugs Bunny cartoon. There is no argument. If the unwarranted and excessive use of any term meant to be derogatory continues to occur, there will be consequences, just as there are for trolling, flaming, etc. Simple as that.

Do we all understand that using the word 'homo' isn't a golden ticket to the ban list? The use of the word isn't the issue here. The issue is the frequency with which it is used. Calling someone a grape smuggler once or twice, when appropriate, certainly won't provoke any administrative action from me. However, if it gets out of control, something must and will be done.

I'm not really sure what your problem is, but (A) you are blowing this out of proportion, and (B) you seem to intentionally be stirring the pot. Enough is enough.

For the last time, nobody is claiming to be the PC police. We're asking that you show some maturity and quit bashing gay people. If you don't want to do that, then don't...and there will be repercussions. If you want to keep pursuing this potstirring line of attack, then do so. Just know that there will be repercussions. This is a request directly from the site owner - the same person that provides all the features and concepts of this unique site. Why is this a big deal?

I tend to agree with the majority here when I say whats the big deal about the word "homo"? I could understand if "fag" or other more harsh terms was being thrown around.

This all reminds me of that South Park episode were anything to do with Christmas had to stop because it was offending people.
