All Time Greatest Albums

Lot of ground to cover, so I'll start at the top.

Mohican - sincerest apologies for fucking up the Doc Oc album. I was rushing out of work and not really giving the post my normal attention to detail.

MightyQuinn - ditto. Tical's right up there.

Everyone else - I fully comprehend the place and intention of the list. It was compiled by normal people, with normal tastes. My primary beef was that it was presented as a list of 'the greatest albums of all time', rather than a list of a particular radio station's 'favorite albums of all time', and it's very clearly from a single social perspective. And this isn't just about rap, like people have said, what about Metallica's The Black Album? Appetite for Destruction changed the face of America's youth. It's at no. 84, I dunno. Clearly it's a matter of opinion. Mili thought there were some glaring omissions too.

Addressing this thing about no rap artist ever being able to touch the kind of influence that The Beatles had...heh. Depends on who you are, I guess. The original boy band certainly deserves its place near the top of any list - they'd certainly be up there on mine. Not on a list of my favorites, obviously, but on a list of the 'greatest' (most influential, society-altering, etc.) albums/bands. I don't know if I could really 'rank' them, actually. Run DMC, GNR, Ritchie Valens, David Bowie, Elvis, Hank Williams - they all deserve equal attention.

This really isn't even an argument, unfortunately. We all seem to agree that the list is flawed, and that's all I was ever trying to say.

Finally, I'll take "nigga-wannabe" as a compliment. I have no intentions of hijacking this thread, so I'll just leave it at that.

No way Beethoven is ever forgotten. Course unless metal (or whatever path it takes) is completely gone in 100 years, also no way anybody forgets black sabbath, metallica, GNR, the doors, floyd, zep, etc.....
well, virtually every band/artist will be "remembered" somewhere. no artist is ever truly forgotten. who knows what the percentage would be, but i imagine that "forgotten" would mean that at least so many persons, when asked, would not know who the artist is. this is but one possible definition of "forgotten." i don't think that we'll know which artists from the last fifty or so years will be "forgotten" until each person who lived during the artist's reign has passed away. beethoven has been dead for nearly 200 years, and we can be assured that he will be as well known in 100 years as he is today. there is no reason to think otherwise. we can all agree that classical music is not a fad. we may "forget" some of the previously mentioned artists if their music is part of a fad. of the six bands listed in the tagged post, gnr has the greatest opportunity for being "forgotten." hair rock lasted only a short time, and it's death was swift. gnr, while popular and fun, brought about very little that was new and mold-breaking. also, true heavy metal or very hard rock bands have a very good chance of being forgotten. again, while heavy metal and hard rock have been popular, the genre has not been embraced by popular culture... en masse (yes, that's redundant). much of the acts are fringe acts or have short shelf lives. because of the backlash i'll most likely receive from the hard rockers, i feel that i must be preemptive: i'm not saying that heavy metal is not popular. what i am saying is that heavy metal and hard rock are not embraced by popular culture (which should be a compliment), much like the new folk rock, celt, or, say, even new age music are not embraced by popular culture. popular culture has tended to embrace only top 40, country, r&b, rap, and oldies.

regardless, led zeppelin, black sabbath, and metallica will likely be remembered for generations to come. i hate to say it, but i could see floyd being rather "forgotten." that would be a shame.

Right that's what I meant by saying "depending on what path music takes". Music changed so much between then and now........people are like, "oh god, how could anyone listen to that crap"

(Not everybody, but most people today. Damn kids anyway)

Dammit! Don't agree with me! I'm trying to pick a fight!

Black Sabbath is not metal. The heavy metal segment was influenced greatly by Black Sabbath, and it can even be said that the metal segment grew out of them, but Black Sabbath isn't metal.

I totally agree....Metallica might have the best album of all time for any genre....Especially The Black Album......I too was looking for that one...Can't believe nobody else said it first.....

How about Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet

Fuck the Black Album-Master of Puppets eats the Black Album alive and shits it out....Metallica revolutionized metal, then gave it up to get radio friendly...

Appetite for Destruction is the best album of the past 25 years. Any list that doesn't have it in the Top 10 is a joke. Too bad Axl went nuts....

Social Distortion-Live at the Roxy is phenomenal. If an alien came down from outer space, and, having never heard any rock, asked what it was all about, I would simply play them this album.

yes, yes it would

strohs, i'm a pink floyd fan, but i'm not a devoted pink floyd fan. i appreciate their music. more importantly, i appreciate their impact and their musicianship, which was ahead of its time. that being said, i think dsotm is absolute genius. what the band was able to do with 8 tracks is still spellbinding. i can loop that album over and over and over again... never losing interest. my two lowly cents is that dsotm is the best album ever.

Hmm, what would you define Sabbath as? I honestly believe them to be the first true metal band. Course I guess there are about 50 types of metal out there. Some people say Hendrix invented metal. Some say it was Zepp. I believe Sabbath was metal for the time period. Now, it wouldnt be considered metal, cause it's entirely too tame

Ok I will say that Sabbath created what is now known as heavy metal.

I have to agree. Master is probably my favorite of their albums although I do like And Justice For All quite a bit. I was never a huge fan of the Black Album until my buddy bought Load. Didn't buy it or anything they've put out since.

best album of the last 25 years? here are some "heavier" bands' albums that i'd place above appetite for destruction:

van halen - van halen (doing what gnr did much better and way before gnr did it; although, i must add that this albums is 27 years old -- not 25)

superunknown - soundgarden (damn, soundgarden is awesome)

master of puppets - metallica (in my opinion, this is just a given)

true heavy metal music started even at the time of or even before black sabbath, with the yardbirds, steppenwolf, iron butterfly, and others. listen to "in-a-gadda-da-vida" and tell me that song is not metal. it has to be.

the definition or undertanding of heavy metal has changed over time. much of what is considered heavy metal today is actually death metal and the like, so, of course, black sabbath may not seem like a heavy metal band.

The Black Album was the start of the decline. Before that, Lightning, Puppets, And Justice for All, even Kill 'Em All (a little too much speed metal, but still good) were great albums. After that, good, but not great.

As for my fav, no doubt...Pink Floyd The Wall. Dark Side is great, but The Wall is the greatest album of all time. I like everything except country, but if there is one album I had to listen to over and over again it would be The Wall. I've also seen the movie about 100 times. The DVD with commentary is sweet.

Dark Side of the Moon is an amazing, amazing album.
I would give you pos rep, but I was on a spree earlier and cant rep for 24hrs, any other pink floyd fans care to help out?

As for Metallica, they are by far my favorite band.
Its too hard for me to say which album of theirs is the best.
In terms of pure metal perfection though, Puppets is hard to beat...
