Alabama Crimson Tide (official thread of Football, Fake Championships and Banjo)

I hate that conference by a lot of people get judged almost solely off of bowl results.

Not all bowl matchups are created equal at all. The B1G it seems generally ends up with a tougher lot of bowl matchups.

Also, The first bowl game doesn't kick off until 2 weeks after conference championship week......the higher level bowls are about a month after. 2-4 week layoffs after playing the season and then jumping out there to play 1 more game. This at least causes some of a fluctuation in results, IMO. You'd probably see different results if bowls were played immediately after the conclusion of the regular season/championship week.

There's a bunch of different variables that Bowl Games cause basically.

Also, the B1G always gets a true "away game", however, the bowl game location might be less than 100 miles (or so) from the opponent's campus.

A better question to ask would be what Alabama vs Ohio State's best OOC win was.

Conferences don't win games, teams do. UGA easily had the best OOC win in the SEC beating Notre Dame.

Florida State crapped the bed this year. Fresno State at this point is Bama's best OOC win.....while Ohio State's is Army.....blah from both sides pretty much. Ohio State played the toughest OOC opponent (OU) though they lost.

I still contend Florida State was good when Bama played them.

My question about the best win was a response to me saying the BIG10 was down.

When about half of Div 1 teams make a bowl game, it's really hard to get teams at the bottom end truly excited. Indeed, hard to get motivated for the ...

Gildan New Mexico Bowl ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico
Raycom Media Camellia Bowl ~ Montgomery, Alabama
DXL Frisco Bowl ~ Frisco, Texas
Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl ~ St. Petersburg, Florida
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl ~ Boise, Idaho

etc, etc.

Soooo many frickin bowl games the past couple years they had to resort to taking a few 5-7 teams.

Which reminds me of my high school making the 2001 state playoffs as the 7th seed with a 3-6 record:

In Walsh's case, all 9 of their opponents made the playoffs. Two of the three wins came against D1 schools, of which one went 8-2 and the other was 9-1. Couple that with a really weak Region 5 that year -- 3 of the 8 teams were 7-3, the 5th seed was 6-4, the L2 points of the 1 seed were the same as the L2's for the 5th-6th seeds in the other regions -- and you have the perfect storm for a 3-6 team making the playoffs.

Mayfield/Strongsville Div I ~ Strongsville's only regular season loss to Walsh. St. V was Div III. And of course Walsh held form losing a close game in the playoff to Youngstown Chaney. IIRC they changed the computer playoff formula trying to prevent such an occurrence in the future. And it's not remarkable that every team Walsh played made the playoffs when half the teams in the state make the playoffs. Kinda like a participation award. :biggrin2: I digress.

btw, how do you get your team motivated to play in the ...

Hawai'i Bowl ~ Honolulu
Bahamas Bowl ~ Nassau, Bahamas

The B1G didn't really play many big OOC games this year.

You had Ohio State and Oklahoma

Michigan vs Florida sounds good, but Michigan is a 4 loss team and Florida, well, lol.

The lower level teams played some teams, Purdue played Louisville (who ended up garbage) and Rutgers played Washington, they definitely werent expected to win.

They have to put a few 5-7 teams in now a days to fill all the bowl games. Making a bowl definitely doesnt mean anything near what it used to.

Even in the late 90s it still sort of meant something

In 1997 there were 20 bowl games.....here in 2017-2018 we have 40!!! 6 wins wasn't even good enough to put you into a bowl for the most part then.

Conference like the MAC and Sun Belt would get 1 bowl team.....MAYBE 2 if they were really lucky. Now you see 3-5 to fill some of these absurd games.

No, they wouldn't have been so [Mark May]ty if they hadn't lost their qb. No one can win games without their starting qb. [/sarcasm]
The local radio guys were talking about OSU tonight and how JT Barrett was going to play. It was universally agreed upon by then and many callers that OSU would guarantee themselves a title by going to a backup.

Any backup? Martell? Burrow? Haskins? btw, do these local radio guys offer advice to Saban? Whereas it may be true Saban is a little less stubborn than Meyer, it is also true Urban is probably more loyal, especially to a (5) year senior who holds basically every Ohio State qb record.

My guarantee is if the Buckeyes score more points. ok, call me crazy!
