Alabama Crimson Tide (official thread of Football, Fake Championships and Banjo)

The big ten has looked pretty bad two years in a row. A loss to a big ten foe is a bad loss.

The sec has three of the top five teams. They are pretty strong at the top. A win against LSU is a pretty good win too. They have been playing well since they recovered from their injuries.

All that said, I don’t think OSU or Bama truly deserve it. OSU hasn’t had the consistency, and Bama hasn’t dealt with injury. That’s why I won’t be upset if Bama doesn’t get in.

It’s very easy to make many reasonable arguments for it against both teams.
LSU is not a good win. No one believes that this year. And the top of the SEC being strong is all well and good but Bama only played one of those teams and lost convincingly. Whose to say Georgia wouldn't have done the same thing.

Bama's sechedule this year is not much different than Wisconsin. The only reason it's even a discussion is OSU got hammered by Iowa.

Your last paragraph is way off.

Made a post last year re: the SEC's bloom is off the rose!

Indeed, every 2016 SEC team except 'bama had at least (4) losses. But not to worry SEC/'bama fans because when the initial rankings come out next year there will be the usual 7/8/9 SEC teams in the top 25 regardless. Because hey, it's the SEC. btw, even Finebaum has said SEC teams playing a Div 1 Subdivision team, usually late in the season, is a disgrace!

Pardon me?

From the final Playoff Rankings in 2016 (That is, before the bowls were played)
3. Ohio State
5. Penn State
6. Michigan
8. Wisconsin

Bama, by the way, was the only SEC team in the top 10... 13 really... Barn came in at 14

And of course, last week's rankings:

4. Wisconsin
8. Ohio State
9. Penn State

Michigan State and Northwestern also made the top 25

Posting a third time from the playoff thread:

Re: CFP & Bowl Games there are many variables: the longgg layoff over the holidays, being an underdog, focus, dedication, preparation, favorable location, thinking about the upcoming NFL draft, luck, etc. etc.

In a nutshell, bowl games are a crap shoot!

>

As mentioned, the U playing in Wisconsin / 'bama playing at the Big House / Auburn playing at the 'Shoe / Georgia playing at Happy Valley in early January! Then we can have a fair discussion re: bowl games. Back in the day with very, very, very few bowl games they were basically a reward for having a good season and as such were very problematic, favorable location for southern teams notwithstanding. Nowadays college football is a financial industry with tiop teams getting their games moved to Saturday night, Monday night, Tuesday night, Thursday/Friday night. Hey remember when college athletes used to go to school Mon-Fri, practice a couple times during the week and played on Sat afternoon? ok, I'm probably a tad older than most BP posters.

Bottom line there's basically the blue bloods and the wannabes w/an occasional wannabe breakthrough.

And these pre-season rankings usually have to do with the crap shoot recruiter rankings by the (4) main ranking sites. Heard some time ago, half of NFL rosters are 3 star recruits. And yes, most of the highly rated high school recruits are from the south/Texas/California which has to do more w/state population more than anything else. Mentioned a couple years ago Ohio's population in 1960 was @ 10 million. Today 11.6 million. Florida's pop in 1960 @ 5 million. Today @ 21 million. GA pop 1960 4 million. Today 10+ million.

Re: Alabama and sports, long story short all 'bama has is Alabama/Auburn football. Which is why the Tide being left out of the playoffs will be like a death in the family! And many would say college football is basically all 'bama has to hang their hat on period! But, but, but they may elect a child ... ok, I won't go there. :biggrin2:

Yielding back the balance of my time.

I'm not sure there's much of a balance to yield after that one.
As always, there's a very fine line between truth/sarcasm. But, how shall I say, current events, have put 'bama on the map. And folks from 'bama must be soooo proud!

Interesting Alabama's fate in both instances is gonna be decided by a vote. One by committee. One by Alabama voters. Trying to figure out which one is the bigger crap shoot!

Before the bowls were played...

I hate that conference by a lot of people get judged almost solely off of bowl results.

Not all bowl matchups are created equal at all. The B1G it seems generally ends up with a tougher lot of bowl matchups.

Also, The first bowl game doesn't kick off until 2 weeks after conference championship week......the higher level bowls are about a month after. 2-4 week layoffs after playing the season and then jumping out there to play 1 more game. This at least causes some of a fluctuation in results, IMO. You'd probably see different results if bowls were played immediately after the conclusion of the regular season/championship week.

There's a bunch of different variables that Bowl Games cause basically.
