If you aren't saying Rodriguez (or as the retard Michael Kay calls him, Rah-dregiss) "would have" dont anything....then you can just quit with the shit about him playing lead off. It's as relevant as me saying that Barmes kid would have won the NL MVP if he didn't get hurt.

While I don't think that pointing out that the two players had somewhat different offensive roles on their teams qualifies as making a "would have" argument, that's fine, I'll drop the point as you suggest. It's unnecessary given the two overriding factors. 1) Rodriguez played defense whereas Ortiz did not. This puts the onus on Ortiz to have markedly superior offensive output. 2) Not only did Ortiz not have markedly superior offensive output, it actually wasn't as good. He put up great numbers, Rodriguez's where just better overall.

Just face it. A-Rod sucks. He's like a cancer. Just wait...he's gonna be the BoSox MVP in the playoffs, just like last year, because a team with A-Rod is a team that isn't going to win it all.

zincfinger: "The only reason Ortiz has the slight advantage in this sole category is that you're comparing a guy who batted lead-off for half the season to a guy who batted clean-up"

A-Rod didn't bat lead-off for a single game this season. He batted 4th for just about every game this season until early September when he was moved up to 2nd.

The only other games where A-Rod didn't bat 2nd or 4th were the ones where Sheffield was hurt or had a day off. In that case, A-Rod batted 3rd.

Luckily for A-Rod, the MVP vote was taken before the playoffs started.

2 for 15 with no RBI's and a GIDP in the middle of 3 other Yankee hits in their last inning.

And, uh, Thump, "there" should be more careful use of the words 'their' and 'there'.

If not their should be.

But as usual with moron announcers like McCarver and Buck they passingly mention his 6 BB in that span as a bad thing. So he didn't make an out over 50% of the time(2 H + 6 BB=8 non outs) and everyone buys into the media soundbite that A-Rod choked.

Hits would have been better than BB in most of those situations obviously but if he wasn't get a pitch to drive and he took a walk instead it's not a bad thing, not making an out is the hitters #1 job.

The playoffs are such a small sample size that everyone wants to use to draw sweepingly large conclusions, it's really frustrating to listen to.

Numbers wise the playoffs are pretty much luck, 20 some odd PA's for each player in a 5 game series is hardly an indicator of how good a player is or isn't, anyone can look like babe Ruth for 20 AB's or Babe Ruth can look like a dog for 20 AB's.

By playoff logic Bucky Dent's a better hitter than A-Rod and in the 1990 WS Billy Hatcher hit .400+ and tied some offensive records set by Ruth. Anyone here take Gene Tennace over Johnny Bench at catcher on their all time team? If you went by a certain World Series you would.

A-Rod's one of the greatest hitters to ever play the game and a .533 OBP is nothing to hang your head over...unless you listen to Joe F Buck.

Jax, 2-15 plus 6 walks = an 8 for 21 OBP, or .381. Which isn't bad, but it's a far cry from .533. :wink2:

Um, A-Rod sucks. Period. I don't care if his OBP was .550, I had more of an impact on the DCS than he did.

Here's something to chew on for anyone who wants to praise Gay-Rod:

Since Game 4 of last year's ALCS, "the best player in baseball (sarcasm)'s" numbers are as follows:

9 Games, 32 ABs, 3 Runs, 4 Hits, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 9 BB, 9 K, & .125 AVG.
