"Acquired" a copy of Windows Vista

I keep a lot of my CDs in MP3 form, simply because I'm a klutz, and car CD players can be a bit rough (at least mine is)... CDs wear out, and I can replace them if I need to.

That and I've found that playing Beethoven from the computer is very conducive to long writing sessions.

And how much of that 40GB have you actually listened to? My youngest has a shit-load of music (10GB+), almost all of which she has never listened to...this is what I just can't understand.

Oh, by no means do I listen to any appreciable fraction of those 40 GB. At any given time I listen to about ~6-7 GB of music I keep on my laptop and iPods. I have a media center file server that has 500 GB of storage space, filled with movies, music, backed-up files, etc. So why not just keep it all? Its fun to dig through your old collection and find stuff you haven't heard in a while.

Upgraded to Home Premium last night. Cost $70 to go from Home Basic to Home Premium. The process itself was very smooth.

The only glitch I had was that after the upgrade, my PC stopped acknowledging the Sound Card. In this case, an integrated sound card.

A look on a Windows site FAQ informed me that a simple driver download from the manufacturer would solve the problem, and it did.

The Home Premium interface is pretty cool. I like the functionality of it and it is pleasing to the eye. I have much more to learn yet though.

id like to know what games and non microsoft software people are able to use with vista. ive heard a lot of grumbling that most games and non microsoft programs flat out don't run with vista even with the software compatability wizard.

it looks all pretty n such, but if all it can do is play mp3's and surf the web... shit, my phone can do that..

I would guess that the grumbling is from people who dont know what they are doing. I have played every game I own and not had a single problem. Use alot of non-MS programs, trillian, flash fxp, thunderbird, mirc, fireworks, dreamweaver, flash, clonecd and clonedvd, nero, winamp, open office, etc. Probably more that I didnt list. I have had literally zero probs with it.

Third

Everytime I open CivIV, Vista warns me there are compatibility issues. I play everyday and have yet to have an issue.

By JESSICA MINTZ
AP Business Writer

REDMOND, Wash. (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. said Monday it sold 20 million consumer copies of the new Windows Vista operating system worldwide in February, but analysts said the data shed little light on the program's popularity during its first month on the market.

Ok folks, I just picked up a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium. For those who have upgraded, can you provide some tips for someone who is far from a computer expert. Will I lose my programs once I upgrade? Should I do a full backup or just my documents setting, etc.?

Certainly back up everything of any real value to you, incase something goes very wrong.

You shouldn't lose any programs during the upgrade (as long as you are going from NTFS to NTFS), but you will run into issues with existing programs' compatability on Vista until you can download some updates. Be aware, many programs have not yet released Vista patches. Including Palm, if you have a Zire, Treo or Tungsten PDA.

If you have the system disk to restore your system back to XP, make sure you know where it is before you start. If something goes very wrong, you'll need it.

It wouldn't hurt to visit the sites for your current high use software and see if they have patches available before you upgrade.

If you have questions, holla
