I posted over in the laptop thread that I saw Vista running on a Dell Inspirion 1705 with a GB of ram and I was unimpressed. I found it to be sluggish and I was surprised that it used 60-70% of the RAM when nothing was running.

I haven't kept up with the new CPU's. The Dell I tried has the Centrino Duo Core. On my next laptop, should I spec a better, faster processor? Any suggestions?

I appreciate any nuggets of wisdom from those in the know.

^this is 100% true. I am running vista ultimate 64bit on an e1705 with 2gb of 667mhz ram with a 2.0 core 2 duo processor, and right now I am using 45% of ram and about 17% of each core.

Oh yea, the core 2 duo processors are the best out right now, well excluding the quad cores. But right now intel is winning processor war with much better chips for a cheaper price.

Apparently not, cause I am running a single core athlon 64 3700, and I dont have that problem :)

look at any of the tests. the athlon does not even compare in benchmark tests. Frankly, I am biased towards Amd, as this is the first Intel I have owned since the p2 266.

I'm running an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ wth 2 GB of RAM on Home Premium.

Sitting idle, I'm using about 11% RAM and 15% of CPU.

What are you guys doing to your PC's?

windows aero and ultimate extras probably. Having a wmv for background, etc. I jsut closed all programs and I was wrong each core idles at like 5%, but the ram still is 40-50%.

No because home premium has aero and such as well. Tis what I am running. I am usin about 300 meg sitting still.

no, but whats the point of having this new os without all the cool looking stuff? Really without the glossy stuff it isnt a drastic change from xp, like the new office is.

Like I said it doesn't have all of the glossy stuff as evidenced by not having ultimate extras, this being said, I don't mind it eating my resources. This is why when I bought this laptop I maxed out the ram and made sure I got the 667mhz ram also.
