8 player deal: Reds trade Kearns, Lopez to Nats for Majewski, Bray, Clayton

Clayton fielding percentage this year: .970

Lopez fielding percentage last year: .970

Sorry guys, I have to disagree...Clayton is not a defensive upgrade. If he can turn DPs better, OK, that is a plus, but he might have been a defensive upgrade in 1999, but not so much now.

Well with him and Castro manning the SS position I don't think there is anyone that will tell you we are not better denesively.

And we put up 9 runs without those 2 tonite and still almost lost b/c of our bullpen. I am just glad there is help on the way.

A picture speaks 1000 words

Exhibit A: Austin Kearns, how do you feel about being traded?

Exhibit B: Jerry Nerron, how do you feel about getting some middle relievers with ERAs actually below 4.00?

Good trade if you ask me...Philipe 'HUMA' Lopez's defense was a flat out liability. (Head Up My Ass). Even at age 92, Clayton will be a better defensive SS for the Reds down the stretch. Denorfia will replace Kearns in the OF and I have read where some believe Denorfia would be a starter on most major league rosters had he not been in a log jam in Cincy. Kearns has the mental toughness of a four year old staring at a corner in time-out...he can't turn on anything inside and he leads with his hand which puts him out in front of anything offspeed and away.

Sometimes addition by subtraction is a good thing. Lopez drove me nuts playing SS...besides, with Philips likely to move to SS next year, I'm not sure Lopez wanted to be a 2B...overall, I don't think this trade looks as bad as some people may think...you get better defensively, you get fresh arms for the bullpen...and you are only 4 games out of the race.
Agree all the way around.

The best part of the deal is that Krivsky gets to send all the crap back to Bowden that he left in the Queen City on his way out.

Sorry Austin and Felipe, it's nothing personal. It's just that, if ... well, Bowden thought you were talented and could contribute to a winning franchise, then we really need to cut you loose as fast as freakin' possible. :wink2:

OK I'll be the one to ask. What the hell does HUMA mean?

It is a name I gave to Lopez earlier this year after the reds lost a game in the 9th because he couldn't turn a double play and threw the ball into the dougout and put the tying run on 2nd. Earlier in the game he failed to advance a runner to third with nobody out...twice. I think Lopez has the offensive talent to be as good as he wants to be...but he has no range at SS....be honest reds fans: how many times have you watched a 12 hopper up the middle roll into centerfield and say to yourself 'Larkin would have had that easy!'?

Its not about the .970 field percentage as much as its about the ability to get to balls that most SS should get to.

Lopez had been killing us. I think some of the people who are mad to see him go are thinking back to his career year last year. I can tell you right now that Lopez will never be an all star again. Kearns and Wagner are the ones I am torn up about but just a little. I keep seeing potential in Kearns but something always happens that keeps him from reaching it. Wagner, same thing tons of potential but again something always seems to happen. The Young middle releif is great in my opinion, just look how much the bullpen has cost us this year, and the starters had to be starting to lose confidence in the guys behind them, which just leads to the starting pitcher to put to much pressure on themselves and then snap. Clayton, is better at defense overall, really always has been, although I think he will be on the bench most of the time, while Phillips, Castro, and Freel fill in the SS/2nd Base spots most of the time.

Agree all the way around.

More to Come?

One of the underlying aspects to this deal is the money. The Reds saved 1.5 mill for the rest of the season. We'll find out in the near future if they plan to use this extra cash (maybe a wavier claim after the trade deadline, or possibly a trade to bring in a better SS like Tampa's Julio Lugo?) or if they sit on it. Ownership says it will spend the money to get the team into the playoffs right now. We will see.

One thing I did like about the trade, quality relief pitching is at a premium this year, more than ever with about 20 team in playoff contention. K acted early and wasn't afraid to shake up the roster. I don't think it is a message to fans, only a way to improve the team. Narron is key on D and Lopez was a sub-par thrower (someone posted he had the same fielding % as Clayton, but take a look at throwing errors and you will see the difference).

At first I was a little butt-hurt loosing Kearns and Lopez, but the more I look at it, the more I like the trade. It feels like we took the worst, but I have to believe we'll win more games because of it with better D and fewer blown leads. Sure our Offense takes a hit, but we have plenty of that to go around.

Yeah I just happened to be at that game. :(

Lopez is also batting a cool .232 in the last month so while he was making errors he wasnt doing anything at the dish to make up for it.

Another thing I forgot about is we have another young shortstop in Rey Olmedo who might be able to step up and play some.

I was trying to figure out which game was being referred to, but I can think of at least a couple that included a late-game error, including one I was at in Detroit in which the winning run scored on a ball FeLo (HUMA, if you will) threw away.

it was a home game against the Brewers, I believe...after the error, that would have ended the game, somebody hit a two-run homer and the reds went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th.

Yes I am an NIU, but believe it or not I am a Reds fan also.

here are my thoughts on the trade:

This teams bullpen has probably cost out somewhere around 10 games, and it was only getting worse. In the beginning of the year Coffey and Weathers were getting people out, in the middle Coffey and Hammond where doing a decent job, but for about the lst month there was not 1 pitcher who you could count on to get people out. It was amazingly bad.

Kearns was a power hitting outfielder who Ks alot. We have 2 of those. Deno and Freel will bring a contact/speed game which is something we need. He is a player who in his 5 years has never played over 112 games, and at this point in his career has been a bust.

I loved (in a normal way) Felipe. He and Edwin were/are my favorite players. However he is the worst defense SS in baseball and has a pedestrian OPS. Before last year he had never hit over .260, and he is going back down to career norms this year.

We are one of the best offensive teams in baseball and one of the worst bullpen/defensive teams in baseball. Wayne traded a strength for a need. To get good pitching (especially relief) you are going to have to give up better hitters. Pitchers have so much more value then pitchers do.

Look at the guys we acquired. Bray is a 23 year old rookie who was pitching damn well for the Natties. This kid could be a staple in our bullpen. Majewski is a guy with a rubber arm he has a solid ERA this year, and a good one for his career. He also is 26 years old. Combine the both and if you can get just 6 innings out of your starters (we have been getting more from Arroyo and Harang) and you have a lead, you have a very good chance at winning.

Just look at last night. Up 9-3 going to the 9th,and Eddy has to come in to get a save. That should never happen. We did our best job after having a 9-0 lead in Atlanta trying to blow that. Go back to Detroit where Weathers blew the save, and Pujols walk off in May. You can raddle of a countless amount of games that the bullpen has blown.

Royce was probably the least important player on this deal. Listen there was no way we were going to contend with Lopez/EE/Dunn playing on the left side. With Clayton/Castro you can hide some of Edwin's growing pains on the defensive side of the ball (i think he will develop into a good defensive player) with good defensive SS. It almost came down to having to deal Lopez or Edwin. Edwin is already a better hitter then Felipe, and is going to develop into a better fielder. Wayne made the right move on who he traded.

And that doesn't even mention Thompson and Harris who are 2 of their better prospects.
We probably gave up more "talent", but who knows if AK and FeLo will ever live up to it. We filled 2 glaring needs, and I honestly think we a better team then we were 24 hours ago.

Also I suggest everyone check out this thread on redszone.
