5 players suspended for 5 games in 2011 regular season (Appeal has been denied)

I'm not saying what our guys did wasn't wrong, but its a sad day when scam newton can be shopped around for almost 200k without penalty, and a minor infraction costs our guys half a season. I'm just very disappointed in our players and in the system.

That's their house. This is our house. We are The Ohio State University. We keep our house clean.

End of story.

These players should sit out the Sugar Bowl. If the NCAA doesn't want to do it, then Tressel should.

No matter what the reason for them selling these things, nor how insignificant you feel that this violation is, it is still a violation, and one that is so obvious that all the players had to know what they were doing was against NCAA rules.

They made the decisions to sell these items and therefore knew that they were putting the whole football program at risk. This is a black eye for everyone at Ohio State, not just these specific players, and the fault is theirs alone. Ignorance is never a valid defense in our country. There are always people you can ask if something is okay to do before you do it.

I applaud Gene Smith for saying that OSU needed to improve their education to the players on this matter. He is just saying the right things, though, and the fault is really not his nor any lack of education. These kids were taught, and they knew. And even if they weren't sure, they would have asked if they were worried about breaking the rules.

Sit these players on January 4, Coach Tressel! They should not play one down. There are other players who have not violated the rules who deserve to play in this game. If you let them play I think it casts even more of a shadow over the game, and the program. These players have already given the university a black eye, no need for them to do any more damage by playing in the bowl game. Plus what kind of message would playing them send to the freshman on the bench. Especially when these players may just enter the NFL draft this winter.

Send the right message. Ohio State should not stand for this. Good for the NCAA suspending the kids five games. But now Ohio State needs to do the right thing and suspend them for the bowl game.

And wanting to sit the players does not mean I don't like them nor wish for them to have success on or off the field. I hope they are very successful in their football careers, and more importantly their life. If they were my kids, the punishment they would get at home would make being suspended for five football games seem like nothing.

It is a privledge to play football at Ohio State. These kids spent their whole lives earning that privledge, but they lost it by selling these things. It will take awhile for them to earn it back, which they can and should. But they will not have earned it back by January 4th.

You cannot possibly be serious. Pryor at least got to play piecemeal in three games behind a sixth-year senior before he took over as starter. No way Braxton comes in and starts from day one. My money is on Guiton.

Pryor didn't early-enroll in January before his freshman season: Miller gets all of spring practice and the summer as a part of the team even before fall camps begin. Maybe 4-career-pass Guiton is the guy, and maybe it's senior backup Bauserman, but there's definitely an opportunity for a QB like Miller to take over in Pryor's absence.

I don't disagree with you about Guiton but Pryor came in for fall camp. Miller gets to go through winter workouts, spring practices and summer workouts before reporting for fall camp. He's already mechanically ahead of Pryor at a similar age and he'll be ahead in the scheme as well when he reports to his first fall camp.

He just might have a shot. The spring game will be very interesting to watch in 2011.

The last thing I want to happen is them to mess up Braxton Miller and his progression by thrusting him into a starter (for only 5 games) behind a completly dismantled Oline(Boren,Bryant,Adams and probably Brewster gone)
Nothing could be worse for him in my opinion. Does he give us the best chance at winning, yes probobly, but down the road, I don't think so.

Guys like Andrew Luck and Bradford Benifited SOO much from redshirting. Tahts what I want for Braxton. A Year to hone skills.

Wow - everything about this just really ticks me off from the selfishness of the players and the disregard of their teammates, their coaches, fans and tOSU, to the ridiculous penalty handed down by the NCAA.

At this point I would not be sad to see each player move on...

Whatever the coaches decide, I will support as always, but I'm growing tired of student/athletes disgracing tOSU and damaging the football team.

I'm going to stop now...

Actually, I don't really give a crap that these guys are suspended. They made their bed and they'll sleep in it; the team will move on without them and still be successful. I'm annoyed that they either 1) didn't know what they were doing was wrong or 2) did and then did it anyway. In either case, it doesn't speak highly of their judgment (ask if you don't know!). I'm guessing that they had been told that they cannot sell memorabilia (OSU wouldn't gloss over that) and still sold it. Well, you reap what you sow. Frankly, I'm not sure that losing any of these guys will materially harm the team beyond blowing Braxton Miller's redshirt. Such is life - do the crime, do the time.

What disappoints me the most is that players sold gold pants and Big Ten Champ rings.:sad2:

Same here. That really hurts to think that they could sell those items for tats :(

Agreed completely. "Preferential treatment"? I have a better example of "preferential treatment." sCam Newton not even getting slapped on the wrist for $200,000 but we get 5 game suspensions for tattoos. This suspension better be reduced. Either way, warm that arm up Braxosauras.

I agree 100%. I wish them the best and hope they come back next year to redeem themselves. I have a feeling this will not be the case and they will forever be remembered for this and not the success they brought to tOSU.

Though I'm highly disappointed, I can't help but laugh...at the NCAA. So players can't sell memorabilia to make money, but you can leave them eligible for the bowl game so you can make money off of them? Sounds hypocritical to me!

In no way am I excusing what these players did, but I find it odd hearing about all of the gifts these players get for the bowl games. Against the rules, ok, but it won't ever make sense to me how the NCAA can make money off of these kids, but they can't sell memorabilia. It also seems like they're acting like this is the first time players are "cashing" in on their student-athlete status. I went to Ohio U for a year and I wouldn't doubt that over the course of the year that these guys weren't getting perks and preferential treatment that added up to $100+.

This is all wrong. The players messed up and so did the NCAA. 2-4 of these guys are gonna bolt for the NFL and never see the punishment. OSU won't get respect for winning a bowl game with "suspended" players. Come down with a Troy Smith-like suspension, bowl game and 2011 opening game. The bowl game is easily worth more than the first two games of 2011 and quite possibly the Colorado game as well.

again, something will happen to Auburn....and it will be more painful than this, in part because they went ahead and played him anyways.

BN27 IS RIGHT...CAM NEWTON stuff is minor league compared to whats coming their way over the Lowder/McGregor FED investigation. Players get ATM cards with thousands on them...slot machines rigged for players to win...the FEDS have all the evidence...AUBURN will get nuked...This is worse and deeper than SMU.
