Dynamic Duo Lifts No. 3 Buckeyes to Win

By RUSTY MILLER

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Just like their high school days, when Greg Oden wasn't on the floor then Mike Conley Jr. took over. Conley Jr. scored a career-high 23 points and when Oden was around he created havoc at the defensive end to lead No. 3 Ohio State past Michigan 76-63 on Tuesday night.
"Mike can take over a game when he wants to," said Oden, his teammate at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis. "I just sat back and watched and did my part. He can do a lot. He's a great player."

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Seven-footer Greg Oden gets all the attention for No. 3 Ohio State. Maybe the shortest Buckeye deserves just as much.

Conley takes over for Oden

COLUMBUS -- It may not carry the same luster as football, but Ohio State's dominance of Michigan extends well beyond the Horseshoe.

Last night's 76-63 victory over the Wolverines at Value City Arena gives the third-ranked Buckeyes four-straight wins over Michigan in basketball and three-straight in football. While Troy Smith wasn't there last night to quarterback the offense, point guard Mike Conley, Jr. was and he looked every bit as effective.

It's a career high for point

Fans eventually see Conley score 23 and OSU beat Michigan

Columbus -- Two numbers stunned Ohio State men's basketball coach Thad Matta on Tuesday night -- the career-high 23 points from freshman point guard Mike Conley Jr. and the roughly 14,000 fans who slogged through three inches of snow on unplowed highways to reach Value City Arena.
"When we first came out and saw about 20 people, we were a little shocked," Buckeyes guard Jamar Butler said. "But eventually they made it here."

Freshman guard scores 23 points in Buckeyes? win

Ohio State?s Mike Conley Jr. gets fouled by Michigan?s Ekpe Udoh on a drive to the basket.
Jack Keefer, who coached Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. in high school in Indianapolis, likes to tell people who ask him about the former a little something vital about the latter.
How the team Keefer coached could win games without the big man on the floor, but it never won without the little guy out there.
So it happened again last night. With Oden missing more than six minutes early in the second half because of foul trouble, Conley and his teammates on the Ohio State men?s basketball team were left to hold the fort against Michigan until the 7-footer returned.

A rivalry less heated ? but it?s still Michigan

MIKE MUNDEN DISPATCH Ohio State?s Othello Hunter cups the ball above teammate Greg Oden and Michigan?s Reed Baker and DeShawn Sims (4).

When the word "hate" was audible in a conversation between two Ohio State students trudging through the snow toward one of the entrances to the Schottenstein Center, it was made to order for a columnist looking to write about an Ohio State-Michigan game.
"Me, too," the other student said. "I?ve never liked snow."
Snow?
Well, sure. Ohio State-Michigan might be college football?s best rivalry, but having last night?s basketball game lodged among Duke-North Carolina, Syracuse-Connecticut and Texas-Texas A &M during ESPN?s "rivalry week" has to seem strange for Columbus basketball fans.

I think Matta is just a great young mind and he is molding this team into a team that will peak come tourney time...
I agree. I see continous improvement as the season progresses. By the time we get into the dance they should all be ready. I have noticed definite intensity in Cook's D for example

I'm not sure but I don't think Cook got any minutes at all in the 2nd half and I am not sure if it was because Matta was displeased with his defense or because in the 1st half he was a little sloppy with the ball a couple times. I
really
like his offensive game but he needs to improve his D and secure the ball better.

I believe that he got minutes...Can't remember for sure, but I thought he did...

he did. he was in the game down the stretch.

If he was in at the end of the game it probably was because of his foul shooting. I just couldn't remember seeing him.

second half box score has him down for 3 mins and 2 fouls...

Not trying to be picky but that is not many minutes. Don't get me wrong I love Cook's but he has to become more consistent on both ends of the floor.

he was subbed for off/def near the end yes. but also played a short stretch earlier where he picked up his two pfs.

i think at this point it is more of an issue of being smart on the defensive end and not picking up fouls 20 or more feet from the basket. offensively he looked slick again last night. though on his defensive. give the kid credit he took raymars lunch and ate it at stretches over the last week or so.

but you are dead on about consistency. he needs to bring the same intensity and attention to the game on every trip up and down the floor.

I also think that he needs to get out of the habit of trying to reach, and sliding his feet more...
