I think you all have been caught up in a snowball effect from the previous few weak and highly predictable episodes. Last nights double episode was much better than the previous 3 weeks. The show has always had "soap opera" undertones. At least this season it is about something other than Jack's love interest. Another season of Audry would have made me puke. Last night had some great scenes: the drill, the new President Logan telling the terroist leader he didn't give a damn about his plans, and Chloe bitch slapping Morris. Also, they really seem to be setting Jack up to crack big time. I think the bomb sequence was telling.

I was trying to hang in there. Leaving the Dad in the room strained the credilbility last week, but I wasn't yet ready to trash the show's credibility.

But then, all of these things strained credibility this week:

- They let the Dad wander around CTU and destroy evidence near his dead son's body
- The helicopter with Jack in it couldn't land close enough to the underpass to see which vehicle they switched into
- They allowed the lead terrorist to escape via the basement through a sewer
- They couldn't track the helicopter in which he flies away
- Jack didn't think to ask the sister-in-law if she ever heard her husband say anything about Grdenko
- They let the Dad leave CTU on his own when his company has been involved with Grdenko, and he had been the only guy in the room when his son had the 'heart attack'
- They criticized Jack in the report about his brother's death, citing the interrogation drug in his bloodstream, and got testimony from the technician that actually injected the drug; but he didn't notice that the level was more than it should have been based on the amount Jack had him inject

And now they're resorting to the old "let's have a conspiracy to get rid of the 'weak' President in time of a national crisis".

To add to that,

- They allowed Jack's terrorist dad to use his cell phone at CTU headquarters unmonitored.

- When his sister-in-law took the call from Jack's dad, Jack was unable to intuit that the caller was not in fact "Susan."

IMO, this season is just a rehash of prior seasons.

You have:

Jacks son(or at least we assume this is the case) being kidnapped. (season 1)

Jacks SIL being forced to lead CTU agents into trap to save her child. (season 1)

Presidential pardon of a murdering bastard for assistance (season 2,3,4,5)

Attempted presidential coup (season 2)

CTU love triangle (season 1,5)

Nuke going off in CA(season 2)

Bingo! They have un out of new ideas for twists. Every season you'll have:
-Corrupt member(s) of the president's administration
-A mole somewhere at CTU
-A current/past lover with Jack aka soap opera
-Someone higher up in the chain of terrorism than the main antagonist, who you'll discover anywhere during episodes 12-16, who will probably not get caught.
-A good friend betray Jack

SOS

Bingo. Let's not forget...

-Assad going from suburban LA to the underground White House bunker in less than 4 hours. Incredibly efficient travel.

The thing that really gets me is that they can't figure out that Jack's brother had way more chemicals in his bloodstream than what Jack injected. Pathetic. Besides us having to believe that Fayad managed to just fly away in a helicopter undetected, and untrackable, that is probably one of my biggest pet peeves about having to insult my intelligence to keep watching the show.

It is definitely a remake of all of the things used in previous seasons. The producers seem to be trying to coast by on reputation for being a great show, and losing their edge that they've developed over every season. The Weapon of Mass Destruction theme has been overly used, a leader is always being threatened, Jack is always overcoming adversity, etc. Its become a big Mad-Lib for each season, where each time they just add new names and new places.

With that said, I still think its a good show. Its all about entertainment, and it is still entertaining to me. It is definitely not believeable anymore, but I like enough of the characters and the intensity to keep watching.

Well, I guess I consider Jack to be badass enough to be worth a couple of good characters  .

But yeah, they really need to get some more interesting characters in there. It just doesn't feel the same. It's like watching a remake, not a fresh season.

Agree 110%. Characters are being eliminated in the prime of their contribution to the series. I say, use 'em, burn 'em out, then lose 'em. More mileage and a bit less repitition that way.

And how do you encore a nuke going off in LA? Dueling nuke subs? Alien invasion? The rapture?
