2025 tOSU Defense Discussion

I’d still like to see this defense against a good team that’ll commit to interior running. Texas quietly had some success there. They just couldn’t pair it with a decent passing attack because Arch was so off.

Eddrick Houston can’t be counted on at this time, which is a disappointment. Malone and Smith Jr. have been playing well tho. But that depth is needed.

Although their WR’s are still below average, TTUN poses the biggest threat remaining because of their rushing attack and Underwood can make plays outside of the structure of their offense. They just better hope he can process what he sees fast enough. Tough ask for a true freshman.

Agree with that. They do need to be tested more if some team is going to just line up and old time football. Houston has been a disappointment

Am from the Super Soph genre, and agree with Georgia Buck. They shoulda won 3 Natty's, except for the 1969 pasting by Xichigan, (still my feeling was worst loss ever) and Jim Plunkett and Randy Vataha's histrionics against Stanford in 1970. More (and better?) pros came from that team, but seems like tOSU of today cobbles together the 'leftovers' (don't mean this to sound so harsh), into a one-and-done team. Guess the NIL and portal make this more of the normal, but still pine for the days where freshmen are taught, trained, blooded, and stay for four years. Anyway, gotta play the cards as dealt. Go Bucks!

I just don’t know who can really play that brand of football like you said. Maybe TCUN but then I’d imagine we’d go heavier with 3 LBs then. I don’t think running the ball between the tackles is a winning strategy if there’s not balance of some kind.

I don’t think TCUN has the OL either but then again I thought that last year too.

Hey guys had to jump in as I may have to secretly root for the Bucks as MSU is in a death spiral and sucking out my soul.

Just wanted to jump in on this discussion because mostly being a Lions fan I am strangely drawn to all things Matty P.

First and foremost. I read an article years ago discussing the key to high level defense and the one main key was having a DLine that can shut down the run and also get QB pressure with just 4 dudes. And that typically in any college football season only 4-5 teams would have that level talent and for sure 2-3 would be in the SEC. tOSU being a school that also has that level of talent year in and year out so that is one key.

I believe that MP is an elite DC. I think being a HC was not his strength and that the details of defense was his true love and talent. So I am not surprised he has thrived. This defense is crazy good. MP has them stay disciplined and staying in their gaps while also attacking. It is a thing of beauty. It is clear that the squad and MP trust each other and are morphing into a learning and adapting defense as the game progresses which is a huge nod to the coaching and the player IQ.

I kind of feel like this team might not face a real challenge until playoffs. You really need to beat the snot out of a certain team to get right. And I 100% expect MP to have something dialed up for that game.

Also I did not check but if you play Indy please beat them by 100. It makes me sick that Indy is suddenly so good and MSU can’t get 6 wins. Hard times.
