2024 tOSU Spring Practices and Game (April 13)

And yet he may be the best QB
Based only on the history of college football this has to be considered extremely unlikely

One time that I can think of did a true freshman start. Some kid by the name of Art. Based on the results of that year it seems entirely possible that giving Art the start was a brain fart.

On one other occasion the Buckeyes had the all B1G qb returning, but the OL was so bad that year that there was no choice but to play the mobile qb… who happened to be a true freshman. That was the right call at that time. But only because the OL was the biggest disappointment this side of 1987.

There have been many freshman QBs over the years. There has been an awful lot of talk about having them start. All the data says it’s unlikely. All the data says that it’s a bad idea unless the freshman in question has a skill that the other QBs don’t have and it happens to be exactly the skill needed to overcome a glaring weakness on the offense.

Based on everything we’ve heard from camp, it seems unlikely that both of those things are true. Combining that with the fact that none of the Buckeye media seem to believe that any of the freshmen QBs are in serious contention for the starting role; I am left wondering what your opinion is based on. This isn’t a challenge; I’m genuinely curious.

Agreed. Sayin appears to be unreal talented, but Howard comes in with the experience and at a high level. Sayin could definitely benefit from some physical development and he is in a great spot to do so in our QB room, while also getting some reps without burning a redshirt (not sure that matters with Sayin, he is probably not going to be around for more than 3-4 years). You absolutely give the kid a shot at winning the job and get him reps, but realistically I don't see him competing for the starting gig absent injury to others.

100% agree that it's unlikely to happen. One due to the importance of this year for Day. Sayin does have something that the other QBs don't appear to have. A consistent accurate arm. Obviously this is subjective based on the fact he has yet to pay a college snap. My comments are purely based desire to have a gunslinger again behind center. Not a knock on the older QBs on the team. If Sayin has some fire behind him would be nice to see a QB like that again. We haven't seen that in quite some time.

DaddyBB, remember that game. Against Penn St, and Schlichter got smushed. OL was porous, he was throwing from his heel, and what, 4 Ints? Or was that how many TDs tOSU lost by. Can't recollect. Hopefully Sayin doesn't get tossed to the wolves like Art did, because he's gonna have to run for his life. We'll see how well the OL protects, but I'm thinking all the rose-colored glasses aren't going to prepare for what's going to happen, unless Day puts a 'no blitzing' sign up. Don't think that'll impress the passel of recruits wanting to see what we got. Also hope there's full pads, and some real hitting, yeah I get the QBs are made of porcelin and will be in black jerseys. Also hope that the QBs fling the ball. Expect Devin to win that round, but mostly counting on Will to move the team down the field, at a steady clip. Also (guess it's PSS), wonder if the solid 1's are going to get in for couple of series, then on to the 2's and 3's. Maybe a pearl will arise from the 0yster? Or at least some of the guys fighting for the 2 deep will put on a show for the other 124 college coaches watching, and ranking who take in the portal. I'm betting on 8, 7 now that Dylan has opted out. Go Bucks!

I remember it too. That game on September 16, 1978 was a disaster. Schlichter had 5 interceptions and a fumble. Ohio State had a total of 8 turnovers in the game.

The quarterback battle served as fodder leading up to the matchup. Hayes did not tip his hand and did not reveal his decision until the Buckeyes took the opening kick. With both Gerald and Schlichter standing beside him on the sideline, Hayes sent them both in to start the game. As the team broke the huddle, Schlichter went to quarterback and Gerald lined up at split end. Schlichter's five interceptions led to the Bahr's four successful field goals in Penn State's 19-0 victory. The Nittany Lions became the first team to defeat Ohio State in the season opener since Arizona accomplished the feat in 1967.

Check out the box score, some really good Buckeyes played on that team too, including Tom Cousineau, Ron Springs, and Doug Donley, etc.

As most of us remember, 1978 was a very frustrating year for Woody Hayes (going 7-4-1) and they ended the season playing Clemson in the Gator Bowl. That game ended up being his last one as Ohio State's head football coach.
