2024 tOSU Spring Practices and Game (April 13)

Based only on the history of college football this has to be considered extremely unlikely

One time that I can think of did a true freshman start. Some kid by the name of Art. Based on the results of that year it seems entirely possible that giving Art the start was a brain fart.

On one other occasion the Buckeyes had the all B1G qb returning, but the OL was so bad that year that there was no choice but to play the mobile qb… who happened to be a true freshman. That was the right call at that time. But only because the OL was the biggest disappointment this side of 1987.

There have been many freshman QBs over the years. There has been an awful lot of talk about having them start. All the data says it’s unlikely. All the data says that it’s a bad idea unless the freshman in question has a skill that the other QBs don’t have and it happens to be exactly the skill needed to overcome a glaring weakness on the offense.

Based on everything we’ve heard from camp, it seems unlikely that both of those things are true. Combining that with the fact that none of the Buckeye media seem to believe that any of the freshmen QBs are in serious contention for the starting role; I am left wondering what your opinion is based on. This isn’t a challenge; I’m genuinely curious.
Agreed. Sayin appears to be unreal talented, but Howard comes in with the experience and at a high level. Sayin could definitely benefit from some physical development and he is in a great spot to do so in our QB room, while also getting some reps without burning a redshirt (not sure that matters with Sayin, he is probably not going to be around for more than 3-4 years). You absolutely give the kid a shot at winning the job and get him reps, but realistically I don't see him competing for the starting gig absent injury to others.

I don’t put a lot of stock into the info coming out of Spring practice. Just my take that there’s a lot of noise about this or that coming it, but when the season starts we see the other thing.
Agreed. I love watching the spring game every year, but I don't know enough to know if I should be excited about one thing or another. "What a great play by the offense to score that touchdown!" Was it? Or was it a terrible play by the defense?
