OHIO STATE BUCKEYES – OFFENSIVE TACKLE​

Between surprising returnees and a stellar transfer portal class, Ohio State’s roster is loaded entering 2024 with perhaps one exception: The offensive line. Everyone saw the Cotton Bowl. The Buckeyes’ offensive line allowed four sacks, but that doesn’t tell the full story of how poorly that unit performed. It was a disaster. That unit must improve for Ohio State to reach its goals next year.

The Buckeyes’ left side of the line seems set. Josh Simmons had his ups and downs at left tackle while coming over from San Diego State, but he showed some real flashes of consistency, too. He projects to start next to all-Big Ten left guard Donovan Jackson once again. Center figures to be held down by Alabama transfer Seth McLaughlin, which leaves the right side of the line.

Starting right tackle Josh Fryar returns. But there were some troublesome moments for Fryar in his first year as a starter, particularly down the stretch. There’s a real chance that Fryar, who played well in spot duty at right guard last season, kicks back inside and opens a spot on the outside. That role could go to promising second-year tackle Luke Montgomery, but it could also mean a dip back into the transfer portal for a starting-caliber tackle. The Buckeyes swung and missed at a few during the winter transfer portal window. Depending on how things go in the spring, they could try again.

ON TREVEYON HENDERSON, QUINSHON JUDKINS​

  • On Henderson: "What a leader he's been the last month. ... I have a feeling he's gonna have an unbelievable season."
  • Day said it's a "fascinating conversation" to have with his staff about how Ohio State will use both Henderson and Judkins out of the backfield.
  • Day believes teams need to be "three or four deep" at all positions because of how many more games teams could play in the 12-team College Football Playoff era. "For us, we are looking forward to playing at the end of the season next year, so we need to make sure we have depth at each position."

ON OHIO STATE'S QUARTERBACK ROOM​

  • "We had to bring in some extra chairs."
  • Day said it was a "very unique situation with the way it all shook out" with adding Will Howard from Kansas State and Julian Sayin from Alabama. "We felt like it was the right thing to do. It's only gonna raise the room. ... We have to get a lot guys reps this spring... but we will see how it all shakes out."
  • "We want to get these guys as many reps as we can."
  • Between Howard, Devin Brown, Lincoln Kienholz, Air Noland and Sayin "each have something they do well."

ON OHIO STATE'S OFFENSIVE LINE​

  • Day said Ohio State's offense performs well when it can be efficient in running between the tackles and recording explosive plays in the passing game. "When we are at our best, we have had a combination of those two things."
  • "Seth McLaughlin is a great addition to the room."
  • "Donovan Jackson should be one of the best guards in the country."
  • "You are not gonna see a more talented player than Josh Simmons."
  • Day said Josh Fryar has "swing ability" to play tackle and guard. He said Luke Montgomery will get some reps at guard this spring.

KEENAN BAILEY​

  • Gee Scott Jr. “sets the tone” for the tight end unit, Bailey said. “He’s been here for quite a while. He knows what it takes, right. So he sets the tone as far as details and preparation and effort and toughness.”
  • Bailey said he isn’t expecting just one tight end to singlehandedly replace Cade Stover. Collectively, his goal is for Ohio State’s tight end room to be the best tight end unit in the country.
  • Bailey said former Ohio State wide receiver Sam Wiglusz called him to tell him he would love Will Kacmarek, who transferred to Ohio State this offseason after playing with Wiglusz at Ohio for the past two years. Bailey said Kacmarek is still “transitioning” to Ohio State, but Bailey has been pleased with the way Kacmarek is working.
  • Bailey said he was “really proud” of how hard Bennett Christian worked last year despite being suspended from playing for testing positive for a banned substance. He thought Christian developed in practice even though he couldn’t play in games.
  • Bailey said “it’s been awesome” working with new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. “It’s been great for the tight ends. I’ll leave it at that not to get too much into scheme, but we’ve definitely benefited, and me personally learning every day.”
  • Bailey described the six tight ends currently going through spring practice – Scott, Kacmarek, Christian, Jelani Thurman, Patrick Gurd and Jace Middleton – as “six of the toughest dudes on the team.” He hopes all of them can earn playing time this year.
  • “We’re working quite a few guys back there,” Bailey said when asked if Caleb Downs was taking practice reps at punt returner, a position he is now coaching along with Brian Hartline.
  • On the kick and punt return units: “If there’s not tight ends all over those units, then they’re not going to play tight end at Ohio State. And I bet you Hartline feels the same way about the receivers.”
  • Bailey said his goal is to be the best punt return coach in the country. He said he, Hartline and support staffers Rob Keys, Sean Binckes and Gunner Daniel spent an entire week before spring practice focused on studying the return game and preparing to coach that role this year.
  • Bailey said he’s had FaceTime calls with incoming freshmen Max LeBlanc and Damarion Witten to help them prepare for their first season even though they aren’t enrolling until summer.
