2024 tOSU Defense Discussion

So, wtf? Was Johnson the problem the whole time? Did we just waste the potential of two possible All-American defensive ends? Better now than not at all, but why now?

The way the whole team has stepped it up makes me ask this question at about 9 different spots it seems like.

I'm trying not to waste any energy on it. It's just one of those things, something clicked, let's hope it keeps clicking for two more games and then we can spend the off season bouncing off the walls, pondering the unponderables like this.

The theory I'm working with is that Day's been treating this season like the NFL. Do enough to get to the playoffs then turn on it. Although to be honest, the only really inexplicable performance was the one against SCUM. Oregon has a boatload of talent on offense and the game was at Autzen. Nebraska I just assume they were trying to see what they had at OL. SCUM still remains baffling to this day though. No excuse for that other than a total choke job.

It's a testament to this team that they were still beating most teams in the B1G by 3 TDs while looking like they were going at half speed. Hell they whooped Top 5 Indiana while looking about 45% as good as they've looked these past couple of weeks.

Yes, but also no.

I think the couple extra days rest in this format benefits us on defense, we play physical and beat ourselves up. Georgia was the only other team that hits as hard, and they're out now.

Tennessee kinda played us straight up thinking they had the better matchup. Old Big Ten teams know better than that, and game plan... Or just hold.

Oregon didn't change their game plan, and had false bravado from a game where we did not play close to our potential on defense.

Nobody is playing to kill the clock all game anymore. We're getting a lot more pass rush opportunities.

But I do think the stunting and rotating depth on the D-line is the biggest factor.

I'm not going to argue it very hard right now but I don't buy that for a second.

It sounds like when people used to try and say Tressel knew he didn't need a lot of points so he just scored what he needed to. I said then and I say now, bullshit. If you offered him 50 points before the game he would take it. Any coach would and it doesn't matter who they are playing or what time of the year.

He may have been rotating guys to keep them fresh or whatever but there is no way he lost two games and damn near lost two more just because he was waiting to turn on the rocket fuel in the playoffs.

Sacks have been up since the Oregon game. It’s no surprise that coincides with Knowles allegedly having full control.

It’s hard to block people when you don’t know where they’re going to be. All I know is we all the sudden have a double digit sack guy and both our ends are averaging 2 sacks per game in the playoffs.

We quietly have been a leader in sacks this year and that’s despite the first 5 games.

i’ve been thinking the same thing. day getting involved on the defensive side and cracking knowles and johnson’s skulls together and convincing johnson to try out three-man fronts.

Yeah I won't really argue my point either too much. The only reason I brought that up is that, numerous times now, Day's OSU have played with an entirely different level of intensity in the playoffs than the regular. I brought it up before but previous plays where opponents would be falling forward for another few yards, those same opponents aren't getting another inch. It's kinda shocking how crazy the turnaround has been.

I think it's kind of like a baseball pitcher who has gigantic issues in the first inning but then can be dominant.

You can't help but wonder why he can't get himself in the mindset that it's the second inning or whatever.

I think LJ was told he had no more input and that Jim would call the fronts. Which is what it should’ve been anyways.
yup.

and the result is a completely different defense. something knowles was brought in to do. something he’s been talking about since he took over.

glad to finally see it, obviously. but i hope we don’t suddenly backslide like the other half a dozen times when it felt like we were “here”.

right?

like we couldn’t have pretended on november 24th that beating the scumwads up north was like going into the national championship and jobs and careers and legacies were on the line and what not.

totally mind-bending for me… like when people talk about teams succeeding because they’re running a script… can’t you run a script for more than like two possessions? i’m not an x’s and o’s guy but i totally don’t get it.
