2024 Depth Chart Projection

Buckeye86

I do not choose to discuss it
I cope with disappointment by looking to the future with optimism. So here goes.

QB:
McCord/Brown
Kienholz/Noland

I think our expectations as fans are completely broken when it comes to QB play at Ohio State, especially for a first-year starter.

I trust Day to pick a starter next season and that the play will be better, whether that is McCord in year two or the guy who beats him in an open competition.

The good news here, especially if it’s a first-year starter again, is that Ohio State has four weeks to figure it out before Michigan State on Sept. 28, which is extremely unlikely to be a test, either. And then Iowa at home.

RB:
Dallen Hayden
Evan Pryor
Peoples/Lyle

I don’t think it’s completely outside the realm of possibility that Trayanum comes back (or even Williams), which would be a big boost here.

They lose a ton of explosion in Henderson, obviously, but I think Hayden has already shown in every chance he’s gotten that he’s more capable of grinding 5-6 yard runs in situations where another OSU RB was getting 2-3.

If Hayden is able to keep the offense on schedule more consistently, I think that opens up the offense on 2nd and short in ways that would more than make up for a lack of pure explosiveness from Henderson.

Depth is a pretty big concern if Trayanum/Williams leave, and you have to hope one of the freshman is an instant impact kind of player. RB is the easiest spot to do that.

WR:
X
Carnell Tate
Jeremiah Smith

Z
Jayden Ballard
Anyone

Slot
Brandon Inniss
Anyone

Harrison Jr. won’t be replaced, but this group is still good enough to be the best in the conference and I have no concerns about their ability to be impactful players. The limit of their success will be more on the QB than on them, in my opinion.

TE:
Thurman
Scott/Christian

I think TEs who can block are way more important to the success of a Ryan Day offense than putting up big numbers receiving like Stover did.

A walk-on getting third string reps in ‘23 isn’t a great sign for Royer (who may bounce back if he can ever stay healthy) and Hart (maybe injuries, too? I don’t know anything about his story), so I’m going with Thurman and Christian (who sat out ‘23 for PEDs) as my unknowns who give the best chance of being solid blockers.

Scott was a liability at blocking most of ‘23 and barely flashed as a receiving threat, but it is within the realm of possibility that he can step in a little bit to the Stover role as a pass threat if the coaches still want to emphasize that (which they probably do for recruiting purposes). Thurman could also be a matchup nightmare in the passing game.

Give me 6’6” 258 Thurman and 6’5” 245 Christian, with another year in the weight room, blocking effectively and I’ll be happy—anything the TEs contribute in the passing game is purely a bonus, in my opinion.

OL:
LT
Josh Simmons

LG
Donovan Jackson/Tegra Tshabola

C
Carson Hinzman

RG
Josh Fryar

RT
Luke Montgomery

Carson Hinzman improving in year two will be huge, and he should, especially with another offseason in the weight room. He was thrown into the fire a year early and held up well enough.

If Simmons improves as much from year one to year two as he did from game one to game twelve, I think we’re in decent shape there.

The Rivals insiders (Ward, Birm, Landis) have said Jackson is planning to return, which makes sense. He definitely isn’t a lock as a top round pick and can do fine with NIL as he tries to play his way into a top round pick with a bunch of returning starters on the OL who played much better down the stretch.

The coaches obviously liked Montgomery a lot this year as a true freshman, and an off-season in the weight room will be huge for him. I think Montgomery is a more naturally athletic tackle than Fryar, who can be a damn good RG.

It’s hard to project the two deep, but I think the depth will be better overall next season and I look forward to positive reviews in bowl practice and the off-season for guys working their way onto the depth chart.

DE:
Kenyatta Jackson
Caden Curry
Mitchell Melton
Omari Abor

This is by far the biggest drop off between seasons, although I think there’s a decent chance Sawyer comes back, which would help a lot.

Set expectations at average and hope for the best, in my opinion.

(I’ve said in several other threads that I think a coaching change has the potential to get a lot more out of the DL, and especially the DEs, as well.)

DT:
Hero Kanu
Tywone Malone
Kayden McDonald
Justin Scott

This is the hardest position to project who might jump early to the NFL. In the worst case scenario of Hamilton/Hall/Williams all going pro, I think Kanu and Malone would be capable of being solid starters, but the depth would be a big question mark after that.

One of Hamilton/Hall/Williams returning would be extremely helpful—2/3 returning would make DT a strength of the defense.

LB:
MIKE
Cody Simon/Gabe Powers

WILL
CJ Hicks

I can’t help but be excited for change here. Eichenberg was the captain of the defense but was physically limited from the start even without injuries that impacted his effectiveness down the stretch in each of the last two seasons.

Simon might leave, but I think there’s an above average chance he sticks around. The NIL money he can make at Ohio State has to be competitive with any late-round draft projection he might be getting. He’s been a very solid piece of the rotation and could be a very solid new captain of the defense in the middle next year.

Powers gets the nod as the one getting snaps in the backup role this season (specifically against MSU and Minnesota), although he is mostly an unknown commodity outside of that (although it is notable he jumped more senior players for those reps).

Steele was a good athlete who always seemed to lack the football instincts of an elite LB as a converted RB. CJ Hicks is a five star talent fans have been anxious to see and next year is his time to shine.

Maybe Kourt Williams pulls a Josh Proctor and makes some noise at the end of an injury plagued career.

You have to think that Day finds a place for Laurinaitis on the staff this off-season and that he gets the most of this group.

I realize it might be a “grass is always greener” fallacy, but I’m excited to see turnover here and what the next group of guys can do.

CB:
Davison Igbinosun
Jermaine Mathews
Jordan Hancock

Igbinosun has been solid (if a bit penalty prone) all year and should be even better next season. He’s physical against the run and can be an emotional leader of the defense.

Mathews flashed as the next in line of elite CBs at Ohio State as a true freshman. The future is bright for him.

Hancock will likely continue to be a key starter at nickel safety but will provide quality depth at CB as well.

And there are plenty of young players who can provide depth as well, even with some possible transfers. Like the oline depth, I’m looking forward to reports out of bowl practice and in the off-season to see who continues to separate themselves.

S:
Sonny Styles
Malik Hartford
Ja’Had Carter
Kye Stokes

The exact breakdown of starting roles is always a bit of a mystery at safety. However it shakes out, Ohio State has plenty of options and depth, especially when you factor in that Hancock is a proven difference maker who should be on the field almost every snap at Nickel.

Sonny Styles is a legit game changer who should only continue to get better and is on a path to be a first round talent.

Hartford flashed as a true freshman and looks like he has star potential.

Ja’Had Carter battled injuries but provides solid depth at the very least.

Stokes has flashed in practice and was getting limited snaps down the stretch this season.

I feel bad for discounting Cam Martinez but he just doesn’t seem to have good pass coverage instincts in limited chances this season and he might never get there —I wish him the best whatever happens.

And this is without Lathan Ransom, who’s future is uncertain but he might return after missing the end of this season with an injury.

Overall, I think the secondary is in very good shape going into next season.

____

There’s plenty of question marks, as with any new season, but plenty of room for optimism, as well.

Just like this year, it might boil down once again to the QB competition, which Ohio State fans will continue to be normal and reasonable about, I am sure.

Here’s hoping for some solid bowl practices and a motivated group of young players in the bowl game to get an even clearer, and hopefully more optimistic, preview of next season.

Go Bucks!

I would expect Hancock to leave and be a top 50 pick. Even with that, if the DTs can perform and Knowles can adjust a little to having quicker DEs the D can absolutely be elite. The Oline should be better. It really will come down to QB. Without MHJ and Henderson breaking big runs our offense would have been legit bad this year.

Need…..more……info……

Yeah, we need to know who is actually coming back (i.e. eligibility left but opting out for the NFL draft or transferring, etc.). I believe that even RS SRs (like Cade Stover) could get another year of eligibility under the COVID rules (both his 2019 RS Freshman year and 2020 COVID Sophomore year don't count, so he only had 3 countable playing years 2021, 2022, and 2023). I'll take a stab at it to try and put the game out of my mind for a bit:

QB: McCord/Kienholz/Brown/Noland (McCord probably wins the spot at first but Lincoln narrows the gap imo and will be ready if McCord doesn't improve)
RB: Hayden/Miyan/Peoples/Pryor/Lyle (Hayden seems like our best RB and I think Miyan comes back hopefully healthy...Peoples can make an immediate impact and I think he is our next elite RB, he should be our homerun threat)
WR: Tate/Grayes/N Rogers (Tate and Innis will be our go to guys and Smith will force his way onto the field even if Ballard, Antwi and Rogers step up
WR: Ballard/JJ Smith
WR: Innis/Antwi
TE: Thurman/Scott/Royer/Christian/Hart (I see a rotation happening here but Thurman is just too talented and athletic to keep off the field...Scott is a veteran that we can rely on...Royer I was always high on but the timeclock is running out, so he needs to break through...Christian and Hart are large unknowns that are going to have to work to keep on the roster...LeBlanc and Witten need a year of development and should redshirt)
LT: Simmons/Michalski (Simmons really improved and I think he only gets better next year, pretty confident at LT with him)
LG: Jackson/Tshabola (Jackson likely comes back after a down year imo...Tshabola hopefully improves and gets on the field)
C: Hinzman/Padilla (Hinzman really had to come in too early but if he hits the weights hard in the offseason, I think he will be good...if not, Padilla is lurking and could pass him up)
RG: Fryar/Vimahi (Just a hunch that Fryar moves to guard to make way for an emerging Montgomery...Vimahi could just win a spot somewhere in the interior)
RT: Montgomery/Fitzpatrick/Ian Moore (I see Montgomery winning the tackle spot after one more year of S&C...I could easily see Ian Moore coming in as a frosh and passing Fitz/Zen in the rotation, he's a talent and the best OL in the '24 class for us)
DE: Sawyer/Abor/Houston (I see Sawyer coming back to lead the defense and hopefully Abor makes the leap, talent is there...Houston plays right away imo, talent is there in droves and physically he is ready)
DE: Jackson/Curry/Mickens (Jackson had some good moments and I see Curry getting equal PT or just winning a starting spot...Mickens will have to grow up quick at DE with our thin depth next year)
DT: Hamilton/Kanu/McKenzie/Moore (Of the DTs, I think Hamilton is the most likely to come back with plenty to gain with more PT...Kanu flashed this year and should make a big leap next year...McKenzie has seemed solid when he comes in the rotation...Moore is a huge talent if he has grown into the DT spot and made the adjustment...I think Tyleik goes pro, not sure his draft stock could get any higher by returning)
DT: Hall/Malone/McDonald/Scott (For whatever reason I think Hall comes back and could improve his draft position being the guy inside on defense...Malone got some PT but I expected a year to assimilate once focusing on football at a new school...McDonald should be a monster, just had a logjam at DT and playing as a frosh at DT is a tall task....Scott is a monster 5* that could pass up a lot of guys quickly if he comes in ready)
LB: Hicks/K Williams II/Reese (Hicks will be a breath of fresh air at LB, super athletic but can bring the wood aka not a liability covering the length of the field...Williams I hope can get healthy, but Reese is a guy that should be able to make the jump at LB...don't count out Garrett Stover from forcing himself onto the field, kid is really fantastic and just needs to put on some good weight)
LB: Simon/Powers/Pierce (I see Simon coming back, he can really jump several rounds up in the draft after Eich and Chambers depart...Powers is going to play plenty regardless of what Simon does and I hope the rubber meets the road with his talent and physicality...Payton Pierce is a thumper that has the size and football IQ to play right away as a frosh depending on what our vets at LB look like)
CB: Igbinosun/Simpson-Hunt/L Styles (Davison really had a hell of a year and will be a leader on defense, crazy part is he has a ton of room to improve...CSH didn't play because he didn't need to, but lost his black stripe and is primed to make the jump to a serious contributor at CB...Styles I haven't heard much on but you would think he contributes, though Scott and West will vie for PT with him)
CB: Mathews/Scott/West/Turner (Mathews is going to be our next star CB, you can count on that if he remains healthy...I know Scott may seem like an upset pick behind Mathews, but the kid is a ridiculous talent with the same confidence and energy as Mathews, so I see him coming in with no intention to redshirt and will earn a spot out there...West you can put right up there with Scott for incoming frosh and I see them both pushing each other to be elite...Turner better find his game or he will get buried in the depth chart)
Nickel: Hancock/J Brown (Hancock could go pro after he emerged in the second half of the season but I think he comes back to move to a borderline 1st round/early 2nd round pick, or at least I hope because he is important...Brown flashed as a frosh and then kind of went quiet, but he has his chance next year and I think the talent is there...if Hancock leaves, put Scott and West at the top of my list for starters in this spot though)
S: S Styles/Stokes/Carter (Styles is the man and balls out to a 1st round pick...Stokes has the talent and is ready to play regularly...Carter is always hurt but provides depth if needed...if Perich commits then I could see him on the depth chart, McClain as well)
S: Ransom/Hartford/Bonsu (Ransom probably should go pro with the injury issues and a good season leading up to that, he won't play in whatever bowl we land in but could be back...if not, Hartford is a stud and gets the nod, with Bonsu hopefully ready to play if needed)
P: Mirco (starter by default, needs to drastically improve and I would be looking at the portal or anywhere else to try and improve at this position)
K: Fielding (I think he can be good, has the leg but needs to improve his accuracy)

- Overall I think this team will be good, but not great next year. I would expect a 10 win type of year depending on who returns. Really needed to capitalize last year or this year with the talent we had. Not trying to be a Gloomy Gus, but between the coaching deficiencies in big games and upcoming departures, we could be in for a few rocky years based on our typical standards.

I agree with you @RB07OSU that Lincoln is going to close the gap at QB. I was a McCord detractor turned supporter, but the offense is going to have some philosophical adjustments without a true pass catching threat at RB which is going to require some mobility out of your QB, imo.

I also am jacked to the tits at the thought of Tate and Smith outside and Inniss in the slot, seeing Thurman in motion 8D

I am with you, McCord could have very well worked out to win a title with MH Jr and Henderson...without them, I don't see it next year. Lincoln can create with his feet and Brown has been incredibly underwhelming when he came in. Of course it is wild conjecture at this point, but if Lincoln can limit mistakes while also bringing in the extra threat of running and extending plays, then you could see a change at QB. I just hope Day/Dennis are not dead set on McCord and wait too long to change if it isn't working out.

Tate, Smith and Innis will be ridiculous next year, really excited on Thurman as well. Egbuka is like a 99% chance to go pro, but I wish he could be back to have some more leadership and experience at WR....but Hartline manages that quite well, so I am not worried there. Not really worried at RB either, Hayden is a great RB and I see Peoples having some wow moments as a frosh with his explosiveness. As said above, QB play will dictate the success on offense.

The biggest positive is that our OL should be significantly better. Simmons trajectory looks promising after a rough start. Jackson could have a breakout season. I think having Simmons on the outside and Hinzman at C hampered his play this year. With a full year under his belt Hinzman should be better and get stronger in the off season. Moving Fryer inside is a no brainer. He is an average RT but has the ability to excel on the inside at RG. Luke has great upside and is a legit talent and should be a marked improvement at RT.

We will have veteran guys like Vihami and Tshbola to sub at the Guard positions. Will have to wait for Spring before I can give input on backup C and T positions. Though Fryar could always switch back to RT and Vihami or Tshbola fill in at RG.

The thing that scares me the most this offseason is that they stay put on the line. It got better over the course of the year but it was still REALLY bad. Like bad enough that it still needs an infusion of talent.

Simmons and Jackson (assuming he returns) are mostly fine. Hinzman should be fine if he bulks up more. The right side is a disaster. Fryar is an absolute mess. There's no real reliable option at RT.

If we go in with our returning starters, the backups who couldn't even beat those guys out this year and freshmen, we are screwed.

Admittedly, Fryar was average at RT. But I do think he is more suited and can excel at RG. I think we have reason to be optimistic regarding Luke. He is part of the infusion of talent you are speaking of. But, yes, we have to land some top notch lineman in the future, for sure.
