2024 Depth Chart Projection

Admittedly, Fryar was average at RT. But I do think he is more suited and can excel at RG. I think we have reason to be optimistic regarding Luke. He is part of the infusion of talent you are speaking of. But, yes, we have to land some top notch lineman in the future, for sure.

My lack of immediate faith in Luke has more to do with S&C than Luke himself. Seeing Hinzman this year and his slow strength development doesn't give me hope for what a second year tackle in Mick's program is going to look like next year in terms of being able to push guys around.

I didn’t feel like quoting several posts ahead of me, lol
But @RB07OSU idk if I’d be so confident in Egbuka leaving. He didn’t have a very good season. And the pre season thought of him going in the 1st round is all but gone. He’s a solid 2nd round and possibly even 3rd rounder at this point.
@scarletngray and @sg86 checkout this film. The OL is not to a level to even win the B1G.

Freeze it at :04, and see the entire left side and OC get destroyed and cause the final INT. So its funny when @sg86 says the right side is a disaster, when the left side got blown on that INT
This OL all needs to be in an open competition. The pre season supposed star, Jackson looked average at best all year. The ‘22 and ‘23 classes should get long looks as long as searching for talent in the portal.

I'll take a stab at it to try and put the game out of my mind for a bit:

QB: McCord/Kienholz/Brown/Noland (McCord probably wins the spot at first but Lincoln narrows the gap imo and will be ready if McCord doesn't improve)
RB: Hayden/Miyan/Peoples/Pryor/Lyle (Hayden seems like our best RB and I think Miyan comes back hopefully healthy...Peoples can make an immediate impact and I think he is our next elite RB, he should be our homerun threat)
WR: Tate/Grayes/N Rogers (Tate and Innis will be our go to guys and Smith will force his way onto the field even if Ballard, Antwi and Rogers step up
WR: Ballard/JJ Smith
WR: Innis/Antwi
TE: Thurman/Scott/Royer/Christian/Hart (I see a rotation happening here but Thurman is just too talented and athletic to keep off the field...Scott is a veteran that we can rely on...Royer I was always high on but the timeclock is running out, so he needs to break through...Christian and Hart are large unknowns that are going to have to work to keep on the roster...LeBlanc and Witten need a year of development and should redshirt)
LT: Simmons/Michalski (Simmons really improved and I think he only gets better next year, pretty confident at LT with him)
LG: Jackson/Tshabola (Jackson likely comes back after a down year imo...Tshabola hopefully improves and gets on the field)
C: Hinzman/Padilla (Hinzman really had to come in too early but if he hits the weights hard in the offseason, I think he will be good...if not, Padilla is lurking and could pass him up)
RG: Fryar/Vimahi (Just a hunch that Fryar moves to guard to make way for an emerging Montgomery...Vimahi could just win a spot somewhere in the interior)
RT: Montgomery/Fitzpatrick/Ian Moore (I see Montgomery winning the tackle spot after one more year of S&C...I could easily see Ian Moore coming in as a frosh and passing Fitz/Zen in the rotation, he's a talent and the best OL in the '24 class for us)
DE: Sawyer/Abor/Houston (I see Sawyer coming back to lead the defense and hopefully Abor makes the leap, talent is there...Houston plays right away imo, talent is there in droves and physically he is ready)
DE: Jackson/Curry/Mickens (Jackson had some good moments and I see Curry getting equal PT or just winning a starting spot...Mickens will have to grow up quick at DE with our thin depth next year)
DT: Hamilton/Kanu/McKenzie/Moore (Of the DTs, I think Hamilton is the most likely to come back with plenty to gain with more PT...Kanu flashed this year and should make a big leap next year...McKenzie has seemed solid when he comes in the rotation...Moore is a huge talent if he has grown into the DT spot and made the adjustment...I think Tyleik goes pro, not sure his draft stock could get any higher by returning)
DT: Hall/Malone/McDonald/Scott (For whatever reason I think Hall comes back and could improve his draft position being the guy inside on defense...Malone got some PT but I expected a year to assimilate once focusing on football at a new school...McDonald should be a monster, just had a logjam at DT and playing as a frosh at DT is a tall task....Scott is a monster 5* that could pass up a lot of guys quickly if he comes in ready)
LB: Hicks/K Williams II/Reese (Hicks will be a breath of fresh air at LB, super athletic but can bring the wood aka not a liability covering the length of the field...Williams I hope can get healthy, but Reese is a guy that should be able to make the jump at LB...don't count out Garrett Stover from forcing himself onto the field, kid is really fantastic and just needs to put on some good weight)
LB: Simon/Powers/Pierce (I see Simon coming back, he can really jump several rounds up in the draft after Eich and Chambers depart...Powers is going to play plenty regardless of what Simon does and I hope the rubber meets the road with his talent and physicality...Payton Pierce is a thumper that has the size and football IQ to play right away as a frosh depending on what our vets at LB look like)
CB: Igbinosun/Simpson-Hunt/L Styles (Davison really had a hell of a year and will be a leader on defense, crazy part is he has a ton of room to improve...CSH didn't play because he didn't need to, but lost his black stripe and is primed to make the jump to a serious contributor at CB...Styles I haven't heard much on but you would think he contributes, though Scott and West will vie for PT with him)
CB: Mathews/Scott/West/Turner (Mathews is going to be our next star CB, you can count on that if he remains healthy...I know Scott may seem like an upset pick behind Mathews, but the kid is a ridiculous talent with the same confidence and energy as Mathews, so I see him coming in with no intention to redshirt and will earn a spot out there...West you can put right up there with Scott for incoming frosh and I see them both pushing each other to be elite...Turner better find his game or he will get buried in the depth chart)
Nickel: Hancock/J Brown (Hancock could go pro after he emerged in the second half of the season but I think he comes back to move to a borderline 1st round/early 2nd round pick, or at least I hope because he is important...Brown flashed as a frosh and then kind of went quiet, but he has his chance next year and I think the talent is there...if Hancock leaves, put Scott and West at the top of my list for starters in this spot though)
S: S Styles/Stokes/Carter (Styles is the man and balls out to a 1st round pick...Stokes has the talent and is ready to play regularly...Carter is always hurt but provides depth if needed...if Perich commits then I could see him on the depth chart, McClain as well)
S: Ransom/Hartford/Bonsu (Ransom probably should go pro with the injury issues and a good season leading up to that, he won't play in whatever bowl we land in but could be back...if not, Hartford is a stud and gets the nod, with Bonsu hopefully ready to play if needed)
P: Mirco (starter by default, needs to drastically improve and I would be looking at the portal or anywhere else to try and improve at this position)
K: Fielding (I think he can be good, has the leg but needs to improve his accuracy)

- Overall I think this team will be good, but not great next year. I would expect a 10 win type of year depending on who returns. Really needed to capitalize last year or this year with the talent we had. Not trying to be a Gloomy Gus, but between the coaching deficiencies in big games and upcoming departures, we could be in for a few rocky years based on our typical standards.
That line up will roll into week 12 undefeated.

That’s a really good team if we are that lucky.

That OL is far better than this years, the depth at WR should maybe spread things out a bit instead of always needing Marv, and I really like the back 7 on defense.

This team is 1 OL, and 1 dynamic edge rusher away from being right where we need to be.

This is one play. It’s god awful effort by the left side, but still.

Matt Jones had a PFF pass blocking grade on Saturday of 4.4.

ON A SCALE OF 100.

I agree that every position should be up for grabs, my point is just that it’s unrealistic to expect a wholesale changeover so you have to kind of settle on one or two of these guys coming back, even if that’s not an ideal situation.

A lot of it is going to depend on what happens with strength and conditioning though. Because Mick has these guys stiff as a board right now and it’s possible with proper flexibility and functional strength training, what we have might actually end up being much better than what we saw this year.

Yeah, I agree that I don't think every position will have a new name, but they shouldn't feel like they will start in '24 because they did in '23. One thing I miss hearing about when Meyer was HC, was the constant competition over everything. This OL didn't play well enough to inherit a starting position.

And at least one new FT coach.

IMO, we need to get away from pure pocket guys in general.

Before CJ (he could’ve ran it btw) we hadn’t had a non mobile QB since what? Joe Bauserman?

We have always had the threat of QB run and that needs to be a part of the offense going forward.

Maybe Devin is mobile enough but IMO even he didn’t look like we had previously. We need a guy that legit makes a defense think twice about selling out.

Haskins wasn’t the most mobile guy but he did run once in a while if he had to do it.

I dunno, Stephen A Smith said he was more of a runner than a passer. That would be a really stupid thing for a professional sports commentator to say, so it must be true!
