2023-2024 Ohio State Men's Basketball (apathy, depression, hope?)

Build that elite defense and get your points by committee and in transition. I hope that is what we're doing because it is both effective and makes sense with the current roster. You can have an off night shooting at any time so why not have the best Defense in the country, if possible? It only takes 10 guys who want to be the best at it.

How about playing this game at St. Johns? Maybe get a guage of students willingness to attend a game closer/on campus, rather than trudging across the Olentangy in snow and a biting wind? Remember those game there as well, walking around the downstairs walkways, looking at all the athletic pictures on the wall.

A LOT of names withdrawing, coming back and/or transfering today.

Zach Edey just announced his return to Purdue.

With Edey leading the way, Purdue was ranked No. 1 in the polls for parts of last season, while winning both the Big Ten regular-season and conference tournament championships. The Boilermakers earned a 1-seed in the NCAA tournament before being shocked by 16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round.

Painter's team should be back in the mix for a top-five preseason ranking, with all five starters coming back to West Lafayette.

KATZ LOVES THE BUCKEYES. Andy Katz unveiled his Big Ten men's basketball power rankings, and it ruffled plenty of feathers. Why, you might ask? Well, look who he has sitting pretty in the third spot.

I think Chris Holtmann did a solid job in the transfer portal, and I’m as excited about this incoming recruiting class as anyone. But number three in the conference is just too high. As encouraging as it was to watch Ohio State make a deep run in the Big Ten tournament, this is still a team that missed the NIT and lost its best player from last season.

Katz mentions that he’s gotten “a lot of pushback” for his ambitious outlook on the Buckeyes; it’s funny to think about how many of his opposers are Ohio State fans themselves, who had to sit through this past campaign.

The self-loathing Buckeye basketball fans are ridiculous. Especially the ones you KNOW don't give a single shit about basketball until football is all the way over, yet act like they follow it year-round.

GENE SMITH CONFIDENT OHIO STATE CAN MAKE NCAA TOURNAMENT, BE “IN THE HUNT” FOR BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2023-24

“I think Chris is still the person that we hired and did so well in his early years. He's a good teacher, first and foremost,” Smith said. “All of us can sit back and think about previous years to this one and think about things that were done by players who were playing above their capacity, because he put them in position to win and he helped teach them things that allowed them to win. And so he's a good teacher, first and foremost.”

"CHRIS IS AWARE, THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN PART OF OUR GOALS IS TO BE IN THE HUNT FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP, AND THEN ULTIMATELY GET IN THE DANCE AND CHASE. ... I FEEL CONFIDENT."– GENE SMITH ON EXPECTATIONS FOR 2023-24

Katz is close to a Buckeye (and Holtmann) homer, but I don't think #3 in the conference is unreasonable, if the sophs make a typical soph jump and the frosh perform similar to their rnakings. Why do I think #3 is reasonable?

- Thornton averaged 14 ppg in his last 13 games. I don't know that he will average 14 a game this year, but should be improved as a soph and having a PG that can shoot is a great luxury.
- Key averaged 13/8 before his injury with a high shooting percentage. Teams won't be able to double as much this year as we should have a much better shooting team, so I think he should be able to replicate those numbers at the least.
- Battle is a seasoned vet with 2 years of B1G experience and he stretches the D from the 4 position
- Bonner gives us a really good backup at the point and some flexibility at guard that we didn't have last year.
- I am high on the BB IQ of the frosh, though obviously there will be growing pains.
- Gayle and Okpara got some good minutes and showed flashes and should have a nice sophomore bump.
- Perimeter defense should be much better with Gayle getting more minutes, Middleton being a plus defender and more depth.
- This will be Holtmann's most talented team offensively

The big question is experience and whether the team comes together to be as good or better than the sum of the parts (something last years team never accomplished).

Heck, basketball writers won't get many 'likes' if they pan the hometown school. So, the highest outcomes become their writing norm. Believe we all get that. If one tempers their outlook by reading more neutral or other schools websites/columns, one can see the more reasonableness of where the Buckeyes stand. Script, believe in the sophomore jump, mayhaps tOSU frosh have started that leap by getting so many minutes during the Buckeye swoon? Hope so, and they build from there. Also, mayhaps the Buckeyes will be a more 'well-rounded' team, as there's not a star running the show. Last year, Sensabaugh didn't have any real help, while Branham did. Also read that Holtmann abandoned his portal 'reaches', as many didn't pan out, and went for the best 'fit' player from Power 5. Should be better, as the B10 isn't for sissies or youngsters, but grown-ass men.
Go Bucks! PS, read a blurb on Park, and he said the hardest push is coming from the sophomores! That's great news to my way of thinking.
