Conference media members believe Ohio State basketball will improve this year.

The Buckeyes' men's basketball team was selected to finish seventh in the Big Ten by the conference’s unofficial media poll, which was compiled by The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn and Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch.
Defending Big Ten regular season and tournament champion Purdue, who returns star center Zach Edey, is picked to finish first in the conference and received 24 of 28 first-place votes in the poll.
Michigan State collected the other four first-place votes to finish second in the prognostication. Maryland, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, in that order, bridge the gap to Ohio State.

Seventh would be an upgrade of six spots from Ohio State's 13th-place finish in the conference in 2022-23. The Buckeyes finished a dismal 5-15 in conference play and went 16-19 overall, not even making the NIT, let alone the NCAA Tournament. They lost 14 of 15 games in conference play during a brutal streak in January and February.
The unofficial preseason media poll also gathered picks for Big Ten Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Transfer of the Year and the All-Big Ten teams. Edey, who won the award last year, received 27 of 28 votes for Player of the Year, with Michigan State's Tyson Walker receiving the lone other vote.
Buckeye forward Jamison Battle received four votes for Transfer of the Year, with Penn State guard Ace Baldwin Jr. leading the charge in that category at 14 votes. Indiana forward Mackenzie Mgbako is the pick for Freshman of the Year with 19 votes, though Ohio State's Scotty Middleton did receive one vote in that category.
No Buckeyes were selected as favorites to earn first-team or second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2023-24, though Bruce Thornton received the most votes among players who didn’t make the first or second team.

  • Holtmann opened his press conference by discussing the opportunity that both teams get to spread mental health awareness in Sunday's exhibition game.
  • Holtmann said that the matchup with Dayton will have a "spring game" feel, in football vernacular. "The game will be very much an exhibition. We'll play different rotations, different lineups."
  • "We're really excited about this group, they've been working extremely hard."
  • On the impact of experiencing a hostile environment during an exhibition: "I think it's great. That will be an environment that mimics what a Big Ten road environment will be like. ... Going on the road and doing it, we look at it as a great opportunity."
  • On Dayton's fanbase and arena: "Love their arena, love the size of it and I love ours as well. ... For decades, that place has been really passionate. I think they have one of the great basketball fanbases in the country."
  • There are a ton of benefits to playing an opponent the caliber of Dayton in an exhibition, Holtmann said. "Any time you're going into this, you only look at it as a coach as a really positive thing, because you get instant impact that you can take back."

WHAT’S NEXT?

Ohio State gets 15 days to review film, make tweaks and prepare for its season opener. It will play a “secret scrimmage” against Clemson next weekend in the meantime. The Buckeyes open their season against Oakland on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. in Value City Arena.

Apparently Bucks had their "secret" scrimmage vs Clemson and it didn't go well. Lost by 22. Battle (family issue) amd Royal (banged up) didn't play
Low down from Jardy on the scrimmage:

- Battle out of town tending to family issue, should be back soon.

- Royal out due to a minor injury, also should return soon

- Gayle and Thornton with rough games

- Felix and Zed both started and played a lot together (probably out of necessity)

- Bonner and Mahaffey played well, but I assume that is relative considering they got beat by 20.

So I think the 7 available probably means 7 from their likely 9 man rotation. With considering Chatman is out as well, is basically the same thing. Hardman-Etzler-Parks aren't gonna make up much, if any, difference for Battle-Royal-Chatman being out.

So not great coming off the promising Dayton win, but no major injuries to speak of. Also, since they were basically forced to play Key and Okpara together and they got crushed, maybe it is more likely they pass on that experiment when Battle and Royal are available.

There is no shortage of storylines surrounding the Ohio State men’s basketball team as it enters the 2023-24 season.
The Buckeyes are coming of off their worst season by winning percentage since the 1997-98 campaign. They went 16-19 a year ago with a massive cold stretch in January and February that saw them lose 14 of 15 games.
Ohio State’s record stood at 13-18 entering the Big Ten Tournament, but it was there the team managed to snag some momentum for the following year. The Buckeyes knocked off Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan State to become the first team ever to play on day one of the league’s tourney as a bottom-four team and reach the semifinals.
Big Ten regular season and tournament champion Purdue ended the Cinderella ride there, but it was an overall bright close to a season that had its fair share of dark times.
"After five years of NCAA Tournament teams and a solid level of success on the court, the results this past season were unacceptable," Holtmann wrote in his performance self-review following the season. "I love being a Buckeye and take great pride in representing this University and program. Although we did not meet our standards here last season I am really excited about our program and team."
