2023-2024 Ohio State Men's Basketball (apathy, depression, hope?)

One thing that might help this team improve somewhat is playing more small ball. I think we saw a little bit of it vs Illinois. I'm not very high on Okpara - he just doesn't have much offensive skill and he tries to cling into the paint on defense so much he's prone to leaving his man open for 3s. Key has seemingly hit a plateau. More speed, quickness and skill is what could help this team play better. PSU played Mahaffey at the 5. They have some lengthy forwards that might make it work.

Agreed. Neither Key nor Okpara defend the perimeter well, and most teams in the conference have a big that can step out and hit the 3. Mahaffey has also been a pleasant surprise offensively the last few games.

Not usually one to post articles from 11W since I assume a lot of folks here read that site as well. Anyway thought this was pretty apropos for this thread

Re: The arena opened in 1998 and is currently the largest by seating capacity in the Big Ten Conference, with 19,049 seats, which is reduced to 18,809 for Ohio State men's and women’s basketball games

Just sayin': This trend sure doesn't bode well for Holtmann at all....

AVERAGE ATTENDANCE UNDER HOLTMANN
YEAR AVG. ATTENDANCE %INCREASE/DECREASE
2017-18 13,495 +9.5%
2018-19 13,922 +3.2%
2019-20 14,531 +4.4%
2020-21 N/A (COVID Year) N/A
2021-22 13,276 -8.6%
2022-23 12,181 -8.2%
2023-24 10,531 -13.5%

How long before Ohio State men's basketball needs to run a similar promotion?

Whoever the coach is next year I just hope his teams have a basketball identity. Either we play fast and bomb 3's and try to outscore people, or we play play smart and tough defense, or whatever. Holtmann's teams have no identity (and also are not good.)

...and the sad thing is that he has some impressive talent taking the floor for him.

It's mind-boggling to me how well the team has played the past two Decembers only to fall off the rails after the first of the year each year.

Not built for their conference, now 8-20 the past two regular seasons. That mini-run in the tourney was a fluke on a neutral court.
