I have a working theory that between 30-35% of each graduating class doesn’t give a shit about sports at all. No hard data about this BTW. Just academic rankings and my cheap assumptions
I think that's a fair number. I don't have hard data, either. They might have paid attention to the sports teams because it affected what the local party situation would be. But they don't really care. I had an aunt and uncle, and 3 out of 4 of their kids all went to Duke. The aunt and uncle probably never went to a basketball game, but I don't know Duke basketball history back in the late 60's or early 70's. The first cousin (went to Duke probably '94-ish to '98-ish) probably never went to a game. The other two (probably '98-ish to '02-ish) probably went to a couple of games over their 4 years. And not because it was so hard to get tickets. Maybe it was, but I highly doubt that they cared.
I would also say that *ichigan's fan base is probably a higher percentage who didn't care about sports. (Oddly enough, the fourth cousin in that family spent some time at *ichigan).
The people I know who went to MAC schools also care very little about sports. I know Ohio U grads who don't care at all about Ohio U sports. I know probably 5 Miami (OH) grads, and 1 is interested in his college's sports. I know 2 BG grads - both say they used to go tailgate before games and then go back to their dorms/apartments to watch Ohio State games. And 2 Kent State grads - 1 is a huge Buckeye fan, and the other doesn't really care about sports.
When I lived in Austin, it surprised me the amount of UT students who could care less about football. The tailgating would still get thousands of people, but there was still a good chunk of students who were doing their own thing and were oblivious, and couldn't tell the difference between Colt McCoy or Matt McCoy.
I laughed when I went to a concert and Cedric Benson was there, and he got mad because bartenders didn't recognize him.
