I don't think anyone outside of UGA, due to their performance vs Oregon has looked particularly over impressive so far.

I think about any capable team would have similar results as scUM did against Hawaii and MTSU

Considering Hawaii gave up 63 to Vanderbilt and Colorado State struggled to have much offense and got sacked NINE times by a Middle Tennessee State team that got blown out 44-7 by James Madison in their first game. Any objective person can see that. However DFBIA takes these results as them being a sure elite team.

yeah, our first few games don’t really say much. UConn will be the same result and you add the fact that we play a lot of the weaker big ten teams. It may be awhile before I can truthfully gauge this team. I may have wait until the Pedo and Sparty games.

Exactly. They LOVE calling Ohio State "overrated" and whining about being ranked behind us because we "barely" beat Notre Dame and they have destroyed their competition.

Put Ohio State up against Colorado State and Hawaii and they likely hang 60 on both and see at least the same defensive output.

Arkansas State is not good by any means but they are at least somewhat competent at basic football. Colorado State, Hawaii and Uconn might legit be the 3 worst FBS teams.
The thing about Arkansas State (and I think it applies pretty broadly these days under the new transfer rules) is it’s hard to say, at least early in the year, who they are in Butch Jone’s second year after he completely revamped their roster. 2/3rds of the players in the game for them were freshmen or sophomores.

True. My point was that you can tell that Arkansas State is at least organized and competent. Who knows how "good" they are for a Sun Belt team yet, but they actually look like a real football team.

Hawaii and Colorado State are visibly complete hot messes all around (and Uconn is as well). Talent wise and fundamental wise. They both look like just a bunch of guys running around without much clue to what they are actually doing or trying to do.

But the big difference is Ohio State fans don't chest pump and hand out championships and award trophies when we blow out Arkansas State. DFBIA is all BUZZING!!! about wrecking teams that would maybe struggle to win more than a few games even if they played a FCS schedule.

Yes McCarthy's stats look great on paper, but if you actually watched the game you would know scUMs WRs were comically wide open on almost every pass play. And no it wasnt because their WRs are great it was because Hawaii's defense was completely confused (and void of much athleticism/talent) and out of position all over the place.

Their defense will be tested by Maryland.
Their offense will be tested by Iowa.

Unfortunately, their team won't be tested by either.

Maryland's defense didnt look very good at all against either Buffalo or Charlotte.

Iowa's offense..........yea, lol.

Their defense might sputter some vs Maryland and their offense might sputter some vs Iowa but I don't think those 2 teams are competent enough to put together a complete game to beat scUM

Wasn’t that @CMic point?

Probably. I'm just rambling.

I think Maryland probably has the "better chance" though if you had to pick one. I know Iowa is @ Kinnick but that offense is just on another level of awful. They would need a couple of defensive/special teams scores for a chance. I guess it's possible but I wouldnt bet on it. Their new savior losing the game with a pick 6 would be pretty hilarious though.

Woof, did you know this about their fan base before you started coming around here?

Not really. I didn’t really follow the B1G unless it directly impacted UGA from a rankings standpoint until I moved here in 2009.
I watched the Charles Woodson rose bowl and remember the Fab five growing up, But that is not indicative of their fan base, those are just successful teams.

I have a working theory that between 30-35% of each graduating class doesn’t give a shit about sports at all. No hard data about this BTW. Just academic rankings and my cheap assumptions

I think that's a fair number. I don't have hard data, either. They might have paid attention to the sports teams because it affected what the local party situation would be. But they don't really care. I had an aunt and uncle, and 3 out of 4 of their kids all went to Duke. The aunt and uncle probably never went to a basketball game, but I don't know Duke basketball history back in the late 60's or early 70's. The first cousin (went to Duke probably '94-ish to '98-ish) probably never went to a game. The other two (probably '98-ish to '02-ish) probably went to a couple of games over their 4 years. And not because it was so hard to get tickets. Maybe it was, but I highly doubt that they cared.
I would also say that *ichigan's fan base is probably a higher percentage who didn't care about sports. (Oddly enough, the fourth cousin in that family spent some time at *ichigan).
The people I know who went to MAC schools also care very little about sports. I know Ohio U grads who don't care at all about Ohio U sports. I know probably 5 Miami (OH) grads, and 1 is interested in his college's sports. I know 2 BG grads - both say they used to go tailgate before games and then go back to their dorms/apartments to watch Ohio State games. And 2 Kent State grads - 1 is a huge Buckeye fan, and the other doesn't really care about sports.

I’ve got your hard data right here…

or rather @Steve19 does (in the conference expansion thread)

according to Steve’s data, between 18% to 24% of people don’t care about sports, depending on ethnicity

But since the two of you seem to be specifying college graduates, it’s entirely possible that your number is pretty close to the mark, and it comports with my experience as well. I went to Ohio State within 10 years of Archie’s time there, and I met far too many Ohio State students who claimed they never heard of him. Most of those also claimed ignorance of anything called the “Heisman Trophy”

It is an interesting population dynamic, DC. Who's playing and who's watching varies considerably by ethnicity.
