2022 Rose Bowl, tOSU vs Utah, Jan 1st @ 5pm EST, ESPN

As to the game, it really doesn't matter if we win or lose. Just get the guys coming back next year ready for next year. If we win, great.

I agree but I think it's very important to Day.

Right, wrong or indifferent he will be feeling some extra pressure if he drops the last two games of the season and has a 3 loss campaign on his short resume.

We need to win this game in the worst way for the kids’ experience as a building block for next fall. It will be more difficult now, but not impossible. A win will give the ream confidence and incentive. Coach Day needs this one, too.

Just from having played soccer for four of my seven years on campus, I can say that we never played an “unimportant” match. When you wear the colors, you play as hard as you can.

All the op outs came to fruition, then Olave as well. We've finally hit reality on that note, top players won't play if we're not in the playoffs. Can't blame them and nothing but love for Wilson, Olave, Garrett and NPF. Go make your money and thank you for everything you've done for our program.

Denzel Ward opted out of the Cotton a couple years back so it’s not too much of a shocker to me. Heck probably the only reason the entire team played in 2018 is because it was Urban’s last game. Don’t blame the players one single bit though. We all like to talk up the non-CFP bowls but they’ve been meaningless for years now.

I kinda don’t even blame the CFP though. Even when the Buckeyes didn’t go to the BCS Championship I was still equally hyped when they went to a great bowl against a big time opponent. I remember the buildup for the 2005 Fiesta, 2008 Fiesta, 2009 Rose, and 2010 Sugar Bowls being palpable. Logically adding two extra teams shouldn’t really diminish the importance of these bowls to this extent. ESPN both existing as a propaganda network for the SEC and being solely in charge of the CFP has basically rendered bowls even more meaningless than they already are. Like who gives a fuck if the SEC goes 0-9 in bowls this year and they’re all blowouts? ESPN is still going to be pushing the “Two SEC teams in the playoff” narrative before a single game kicks off because of financial reasons. It feels so obviously slanted and borderline “WWE” at times I occasionally wonder why I even bother. I’ve felt this way for awhile but I think 2019 is what finally broke me so to speak. This year is probably the least time I’ve ever spent watching college football. I’d used to spend all day glued to the big screen. This year though I’d catch the Buckeyes, maybe a couple of other interesting games, and that’s pretty much it. And this was supposedly the most exciting year since 2007.

But whatever. As for thoughts on this game, I kinda don’t have a strong feeling one way or another for this game. Nowhere near the oscillation between terror and calmness I felt the week leading up to the SCUM. That had bad vibes all around it as soon as the MSU beat down ended. Weirdly I’m feeling more confident even with the opt outs? The “Buckeyes have no motivation” narrative is so strong and obvious that you almost expect the opposite to happen.

As of Monday afternoon, however, Ryan Day said Ohio State had not had any “key contributors” test positive.

“A couple one-offs, but not bad,” Day said Monday when asked if any players had tested positive for COVID-19. “There’s been a couple cases here and there, but for the most part, those have been isolated.

Five interviews (YouTube videos):

Hear from Day, C.J. Stroud, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Bryson Shaw and Dawand Jones as the Buckeyes discuss opt outs, COVID-19 protocols, preparing for Utah and more.

"There's still a bunch of guys who want to play really well in this game," Day said Monday.

What's the percentage of players getting hurt the last game of their career during a bowl game prior to going to the NFL?
Incredibly low. Take, for example, the year Jaylon Smith busted up his knee against Ohio State (2015-16) There were 41 bowls that year. With rosters of 85, that's 4,080 players. Smith's injury represents 0.025% of players getting hurt. Now, Smith was projected to be a top 5 pick, and instead went 34th. He signed a $6.49M contract, 4.42M guaranteed with a 2.92M signing bonus. His second contract was a 5 year extension and was good for 64M, 35.5M guaranteed.

In fairness, there were probably more injuries that bowl season. But, the point remains, the number of people sustaining injuries that hurt their future is less than 0.1% any given bowl season.
